I was the same, it took me the longest out of any DT album to get into, but now I think its great. Still doesn't compete with my top 2 though (I&W and SFAM).

Awake might be my second favorite Dream Theater album now. Images and Words will forever be number one, but Awake is giving Scenes From a Memory some serious compitition.

Holy crap, I checked out the Images and Words Live in Tokyo/Five Years in a LiveTime DVD and I've decided I absolutely must get it. After seeing two videos from the Live in Tokyo part, I'm convinced that's a good buy. And then theres the second disk with an awsome setlist, and all the covers, and guest apearences from Steve Howe and two guys from Marillion.

I also found some more videos on Youtube:

Surrounded in Tokyo (this ones for Ollie, the vocals are great.)

The Instrumedly in Budokan:

Part of the crazy Beyond This Life jam, also from Budokan:

Yeah, it's a pity I have to watch 5 years in a livetime on a computer though, due to the reason of it being an American copy.
I love the version of surrounded, I hope they play that when I finally see them, apparently they did it on the 6DOIT tour alot... according to the DVD commentary anyway.

Alex 02-23-2006 08:46 PM

has anyone seen DT on their current tour?

Alex 02-23-2006 08:48 PM
Dude, when you get there, see if there's any empty seats in rows up ahead. When the band starts playing, if they're still empty, fill them! That's how I got from General Admission to row G. If someone comes for the seats just say "oh, I thought these were mine/ours" and move on to some other empty seats.

I can play Silent Man. No shred in that :p
Row 7 for me mother FCuker

Not yet, but I will be.

bwnstl 02-23-2006 10:41 PM

I was pissed off at DT for not coming anywhere near St. Louis this tour and me not having any way to get anywhere else. All of a sudden, this guy that I know (coincidentally, the boyfriend of this girl that I used to be friends with and now never speak to) asks me to be the fourth on a road trip to Chicago to see them. I'm so f'ing excited. It's on March 18th.

ghettoeddo 02-24-2006 12:09 AM

take the time and surrounded = best I&W songs right now

No, the Radio City Music Hall show in NYC.

Oh yeah, right. Well you should right down every song that they can play so that we know what songs we'll be on the Radio City Music Hall DVD.

I will, even though they post the set lists on their web site.

Jev 02-24-2006 04:34 PM

Hmm, I'm thinking of doing a DT medley. What songs should I put in it?

Some thing from A Change of Seasons, Stream of Consciousness, Under a Glassmoon, Ytse Jam, Octavarium, Erotomania, In the Name of God and Overture 1928.

I've already got bits from SOC, YTSE Jam and Erotomania. I never thought of ITNOG. Good choices.

Thanks. Glad I could help :thumb:

Will you let us hear it when your done?

NP: Metropolis: Scenes from a Memory (Strange Deja Vu)

I cant fully enjoy SFAM unless I listen to it un-interupted.

ghettoeddo 02-24-2006 05:01 PM

strange deja vu is my least fave off of SFAM :\ and it's what they're playing mostly this last tour besides fatal tragedy. but they've already played fatal tragedy in my town on the last time through.

i JUST got into ACOS. what's the part of the song around 13:00?

I'll try and get it recorded and if I do, of course I'll post it here. Trouble is I've got nothing to record with and my drummer plays far too loud for an 8 track.

Tell him the chaps over at the DT thread say to play lower or we will eSlap him.

Jev 02-24-2006 05:07 PM

Haha, it gets so bad at band practice I have to put toilet paper in my ears. I need some earplugs.

Im sure toilet paper won't help that much.

ghettoeddo 02-24-2006 05:12 PM

i dont quite understand how those in-ear monitors work.
can each band member hear the overall house balance?

oh and it was V. another world. thanks :] it's my favorite part

I thought it was to protect the ears.

It worked actually. You have to make sure it goes properly into the ear and is all bunched tightly.

Thats cool. I'll try that out when I start a band in college.

That is a my favorite, followed by I. The Crimson Sunrise.
I thought it was to protect the ears.
is it? cuz they keep saying they got rid of the on-stage monitors and started using in-ear monitors, which i assume does the same thing.

dual function perhaps?

Perhaps. I'll try to meet them after the show. I dont know how, but I will. If I do, I'll ask them.

Mmm...Surrounded...

GenuineImitation 02-25-2006 12:32 PM

Top 5 songs from I&W:

1) Metropolis Part 1
2) Take the Time
3) Under a Glassmoon
4) Pull Me Under
5) Surrounded

Lord Abortion 02-25-2006 12:34 PM

2. Metropolis pt.1

4. Another Day
5. Wait for sleep

Take the time took a while to grow on me. I still don't like the intro all that much.

Duman 02-25-2006 01:21 PM

I agree with that, it just didn't fit with Dream Theater really, but then towards the middle of the song, the instrumental parts are really great. The kinda funk bit (hard to describe..) with short staccato notes is awesome, along with kevin moore's best lead for DT.

It's a hard album to choose from because the songs are all great but the part in surrounded 'i know its easier..' always kills it for me.

Lord Abortion 02-25-2006 01:24 PM

That part in surrounded is absolutely beautiful, James is wonderful there.

According to the 5YIAL commentary, Mike was listening to alot of early rap aroud that time, that's where the influence on Take the time came from.

Yeah he is good, I am one of the rarer fans who actually like James LaBrie instead of think he ruins Dream Theater so i don't disagree, but it just seems cheesy to me, maybe the lyrics i dont know. Just like that part in Learning To Live where before it, the lyrics are great, then it comes to 'the 90's bring new questions..' and it just seems so cheesy to me.

GenuineImitation 02-25-2006 02:04 PM

I think most of the regular posters in this thread like LaBrie and believe him to be an asset. Me being one of them.
