Dream Theater live...

Don't expect them to interact with the crowd too much...they somewhat just stand there and play their instruments. And move occasionally. That's about it.

However, if you know a lot of their songs by heart, they do play them spot on, and the effect is immense, as many of their songs have that epic feel to them.

They'd be touring in lieu of Octavarium, I'm assuming, so it would be good to familiarize yourself with that.

Others:
Home
The Glass Prison
As I Am
Awake (the album)

Also add Pull Me Under, In the Name of God, Under a Glassmoon and Fatal Tragedy to that list.

Yea, I didn't know quite a few songs they played at Gigantour...

The ones I DID know, though, I knew by heart. Which made it ridiculously awe-inspiring.

Dude, when you get there, see if there's any empty seats in rows up ahead. When the band starts playing, if they're still empty, fill them! That's how I got from General Admission to row G. If someone comes for the seats just say "oh, I thought these were mine/ours" and move on to some other empty seats.

I can play Silent Man. No shred in that :p

nowitzki 02-21-2006 03:14 AM
Woo, first post in the DT thread.

Ok, so here goes...

I've never been big on DT, I just can't force myself to like LaBrie's vocals. LTE is pretty good though admittedly the wankishness of both bands does edge on me after a lot of listening.

That said, I got my mom into DT awhile ago because I knew she'd like it, and she does, she has all their CDs now. So my parents decided to take the whole family (minus the little one because the show is 16+) to see DT live while I'm home for Spring Break. I love shows and I know I will enjoy it regardless, but for those who have been, what can I expect from it? WIll it be really good? What will they play (so I can d/l and familiarize myself a little better)? Any good or bad concert experiences with them? It's like 2+ hours of just them so it'll be quite the interesting show I hope.
You can guarantee quite a few from Octavarium, they have usually been opening with TROA. They likely will close the set with either Pull Me Under, Metropolis pt.1 or Learning to Live. The set changes every night, but there'll be at least one song from each album.

And I have to say they are the best live band I've ever seen. While they might not run around the stage, the music more then makes up for it, and they usually have a pretty cool video show as well.

Yeah, they'll play alot of stuff from 8VM and then they'll usually encorewith an I&W track and a couple of others or maybe just Octavarium or a change of seasons.

They tend to close with The spirit carries on, in the name of God or similar.

GenuineImitation 02-21-2006 11:16 AM

How many songs do they close with usually?

Lord Abortion 02-21-2006 11:19 AM

Three or four encore tracks or one epic :) for encores

It all depends on what they want to do, all the sets are so varied!
That was just going on what I was hearing about the recent tour.

I hope they close with 4 songs.

I would like them to close with:

Under a Glassmoon
Metropolis Part 1
In the Name of God
Pull Me Under

They probably will close with them, minus In The Name Of God.

Lord Abortion 02-21-2006 04:17 PM

I didn't think they played UAGM much...
I didn't think they played UAGM much...
From what I've heard they've played it at almost every gig on this tour. I hope they drop Caught in a Web for their Awake track, though. I'd love to hear them dust off Scarred.

Blue Collar Man 02-21-2006 04:42 PM

I bought my DT tickets for Hollywood and like a week later they added a show in Anahiem which is like 10 minutes away from my house. Hopefully the longer drive will make the show more rewarding.

BTW does anyone know or have an idea of what they've been playing so far?

Lord Abortion 02-21-2006 05:15 PM

Am I the only one who doesn't like scarred much?

GenuineImitation 02-21-2006 05:17 PM
Am I the only one who doesn't like scarred much?
Its good, but not that great. So I guess you are not alone.

Lord Abortion 02-21-2006 05:21 PM

Mmm...Jordan Rudess Keyboard solo.

(LSFNY one)

I'm personally not a huge fan of "Space Dye Vest." I think that song is a little overated. 'Awake' is a good album, I can't stop listening to "Voices."

Lord Abortion 02-21-2006 06:47 PM

Voices is amazing, as is SDV though.

I love that note James hits.

"Voices discussing me!"

Yeah. That part is sweet. "Erotomania" is still my favorite of that record though. The first time I heard it, I think I crapped my pants. It's that amazing.

I think its the best song on Awake

Lord Abortion 02-21-2006 07:43 PM

I just never got into it much...I much prefer...well, most stuff on there.
Scarred, the mirror and lifting shadows off a dream, I have never much cared for on Awake

nowitzki 02-21-2006 07:50 PM

Those 3 and SDV are probably my favourite songs off the album. And the Silent Man (although I much prefer the LSFNY version). But overall theres not really any songs I don't like on Awake other than 6:00.

Same, that is by far the weakest track. The whole "6:00 on Christmas morning" thing really, really sucks.

Rounder 02-21-2006 08:05 PM

the best jam on the album is the end of scarred, I wish DT played more stuff like that, It a perfect jam. I like scarred, I didn't like the production as much as their later work, but I liked most of the songs, but I still hate labries singing. 6:00 part thing I agree is dumb. Almost as dumb as labrie saying, 'and you can tell your stepfather I said so' with the same tone most people say '**** off'. kinda weak imo.

ghettoeddo 02-22-2006 12:01 AM

123
something abt that melodic middle section does it for me everytime.

JP's solo in scarred is awesome.

my next big project is to learn take the time, it being my current fave DT song :]
i can also do silent man, hollow years and answer lies within, but that doesn't really count does it? oh and all of 8vm except for the shredding!

Lord Abortion 02-22-2006 10:18 AM

Meh, I'm not much of an instrumental fan, erotomania is good, I just don't get them.
Curse of being a vocalist I assume :)

temporary 02-22-2006 02:02 PM

Hm, as to the songs on Awake, I'd have to rank the top five like this:

1. Space Dye Vest
2. Scarred
3. Erotomania
4. Voices
5. Lifting Shadows Off a Dream

The Silent Man would be a close one after Lifting Shadows.

I found some great videos on Youtube, heres one of them playing Under a Glass Moon (I think its from the Images and Words in Tokyo DVD.) LaBrie kind of destroys the song with some near inhuman shreiks, but the rest of the band owns especially Petrucci.

And heres one of Pull Me Under from the Budokan DVD:

Lord Abortion 02-22-2006 02:31 PM

I love that version of UAGM, if it's the one on me DVD.

I really like Labrie's vocals on it, he should unleash some shriekin' nowadays, too.
