Satriani > everybody
Satriani > Vai and DT combined...

I love Dream Theater, but Satch has something about his music which capitivates me when I listen to it. And Vai, I find him to be flat out fuckin' boring.
Agreed. Vai's music really isn't that good. I could never really get into it.

Permanent Solution 11-30-2004 11:21 PM
DT has a lot headache music. But they also have albums like A Change Of Seasons and Scenes From A Memory which are brilliant songwriting.
Yes has 10 times as many good albums though. Literally.

BludgeonySteve 11-30-2004 11:23 PM

Of course they do! :) *only has Fragile and The Yes Album*

Yes is the offical definition of Prog ;)

Invicta_Veritas 11-30-2004 11:26 PM

well, I was really hoping to top 1000 posts tonight, but i'm afraid I'm just too tired to stay up lol

Metallica is prog metal since when?

Cain 11-30-2004 11:31 PM

I think Vai as a performer rocks, because he's ridiculously fun to watch, and he looks like he's having a blast. In that sense, he's really not song-oriented. It's all about flash and entertainment to him. Satriani is truly a far superior songwriter, but I still have a lot respect for any man that can swing the guitar by its whammy bar and then do an extremely ripping lick very very cleanly. And I think he shreds and wanks much more melodically than, say, George Lynch.

Meh, people just say that because they had long songs before the black album and knew how to harmonize in 3rds.

Invicta_Veritas 11-30-2004 11:33 PM

that has nothing directly to do with prog though. its just good musicianship.

Cain 11-30-2004 11:36 PM

Omg lolrz Ride The Lightnin is teh prog!

Permanent Solution 11-30-2004 11:36 PM

Indeed. That surprised me, since it is usually such a good source :(

Invicta_Veritas 11-30-2004 11:37 PM

That's like saying joey jordison is a drum proffesor just cuz he can drum fast.

BludgeonySteve 11-30-2004 11:38 PM

Anyone with 2 ****ing months of practise can drum fast. Most people prefer not to because it sounds bad.

Invicta_Veritas 11-30-2004 11:40 PM
Anyone with 2 ****ing months of practise can drum fast. .
that was partially my point.

BludgeonySteve 11-30-2004 11:40 PM

hehe, yeah.

That was just for the slow ones...

Cain 11-30-2004 11:42 PM

Oh, I get it now...

haha, yeah, anybody see that drum solo clip DetNosnip posted a while back? What a sloppy sloppy solo. It uses the same fill over and over again too.

BludgeonySteve 11-30-2004 11:43 PM

Not much less though, sadly. The best places are places like A&I.

BludgeonySteve 11-30-2004 11:46 PM

And jazz and Other too.

The metalheads and Punks aren't generally the smart ones.

Invicta_Veritas 11-30-2004 11:46 PM

I've soooo got 1000 posts now. Im happy. Now I can go to bed. holy crap im tired. see you all tomorrow.
And jazz and Other too.

I would'nt say they are not "smart", more so not open minded then any thing. Also all the metalhead regulars here are fairly intelligent.

Cain 11-30-2004 11:53 PM

Metal music is arguably "smarter" than most of the other popular music types on these rock forums, and since much of modern metal have what most would call "progressive" influences, that makes it even more so. I would say that a lot of metalheads are more open-minded to other styles as well, or at least the non-mainstream-metal-oriented ones.

Permanent Solution 11-30-2004 11:59 PM

No. People here in R&M are pretty generally close minded. Mention a nu-metal band if you don't believe me. Some people like the music, and they get flamed for even liking it. The ones who say it is the most talented stuff ever, well, they deserve it, but the ones who just like it...no, kids here are pretty immature imo.

Cain 12-01-2004 12:01 AM

All right, well maybe that's just me, lol.

BoboTheRagingHobo 12-01-2004 12:02 AM

Yes, exactly...but that does not mean they are not intelligent though.

Permanent Solution 12-01-2004 12:05 AM

Of course not, but immaturity can be more annoying than stupidity at times. I think that generally intelligent posters also act maturely though. Generally.

Cain 12-01-2004 12:09 AM
Of course not, but immaturity can be more annoying than stupidity at times. I think that generally intelligent posters also act maturely though. Generally.
Immaturity is greatly more annoying than stupidity. Get a kid that combines immaturity with stupidity, though, and my fun is set for the afternoon.

EDIT: When do intelligent posters act immaturely, zep? Let's have some examples, please!

"Mature" and "The Pit" shouldn't be used in the same phrase. That place is just one massive spamfest.

Cain 12-01-2004 12:48 AM

Hi there, Lep. I think we're the only ones still up, unless Bobo decides to stick his head in here.

Permanent Solution 12-01-2004 12:48 AM

I was pointing out that even intelligent posters act immaturely there :)

Yes, that was the jist of what I was saying...
