Thanks alot Opeth, for ruining a few weeks of my life.

Or do I blame it on the concert hall...
I am almost sure the concert hall dictates these sort of things. It could have something to do with distribution of alchohol, if there is no designated area for the sale of alchohol I don't think people under the legal age can enter.

It's usually the town or the band.
I went to see Malevolent Creation, Origin, Animosity and others in a bar, i'm 16 and there was alcohol and beer, funny thing is if i asked a drink they would sell it to me....How i love Tijuana.

I'm pretty sure that's it. Even with designated alcohol areas, underage kids aren't allowed without guardians (although Webster Hall is an exception, being 18+, leading me to assume that it's nothing to do with alcohol). The Bitter End in NYC is a 21+ club--the only reason I was allowed in last year was because I was one of the performers. Same thing with the Living Room. The NYC hall where Opeth is playing, Webster Hall, is likely a place with a bar in back and a small dining promenade, and a hall floor for the bands. Generally speaking, the clientele of such establishments wouldn't care for little kids running around (and 15-16 is damn little to people 18+) and that's likely why the age limit.
Oh man, I'm sorry. I live in a small, worthless town, and Shadows Fall was cool enough to come here twice for me to see them. It was amazing.

I'm a pretty big Shadows Fall fan, for those who couldn't tell.
And thats one of the reasons I like you bud :D. You know your metal but you are not like "Shadows Fall is metalcore rubbish" (which they are not) You are easy to get along with :)

With this 18+ desginated area and stuff. I recently went to a concert and people up top where only allowed to drink but they all came down. I was with two two pissed fellas up front and they cracked open a beer and then. "ohhh I don't want this you want it?" looking at me. It shows that nothing really matters with a 18+ and not 18+. I think Shadows Fall was made 18+ because all the gigs in my town are made in the Uni bar. WHich SUCKS. Because no bands come, and when they do its 18+!

Mik sounds so mean in Demon of the Fall. Its so cool.

Shattered your production is really bad. The guitar is so quite. Next time you do a comp, get me to play bass :)

Kaiwaz 10-16-2005 10:02 AM
They are great live.. but the few times I have seen them, Lopez has been a bit sketchy. The intro to Deliverance always gets him foot-tied for some reason. Maybe I'm just unlucky, or have bad hearing.
He tore it up when I saw them. Sounded more intense then the CD song.

Shattered_Future 10-16-2005 10:33 AM

I know my production is bad...thats what a $40 iPod mic gets you. :p

We would've done bass, but NOTHING was in time...bass would've just made it harder to mix. Another thing to get screwed up.

I'm sorry you missed the concert, I'd be so pissed...

Shattered_Future 10-16-2005 01:26 PM

I'm pissed I can't be allowed to go to the concert.

If I realized I could've gone and the date past, there's no telling what would happen.

Thanks a lot man. :) I love Shadows Fall, and I really get tired of the ongoing fighting over genres. SF is pure metal, and I hate having to deal with people constantly trying to tell me they're generic metalcore (which they're not). Music is music and I happen to like their's.

Mike: That mic cost you $40? I have a $15 mic for my computer and the sound is so clear it's unbelieveable.

Kaiwaz 10-16-2005 01:36 PM

I was listening to Orchid this morning, and couldn't help but notice how badass the lyrics are on this album. I know the entire album by heart, both lyrically and guitars, but it just now hit me how intricate these lyrics are. I recommend listening to Orchid tonight, and give me your feedback later on.

''blinded by a light, my soul it held up high in glory
I engulf the skies, the apostle in triumph
through the eternal flame I travel
as the rain keeps falling...''

Shattered_Future 10-16-2005 01:45 PM

Yea, but it's more of a voice memo microphone...

I hooked up one of my dad's external mics, and that made it sound like how it was for the comp.

I gotta figure out how to run a mic straight into my computer.

EDIT: Anybody that says Shadows Fall is generic metalcore should be kicked in the chin fat.

I agree. Orchid, al those years ago, was the first Opeth album I ever bought. I remember sitting in my room late at night listening to the music and reading the lyrics. It's a really underrated album.

EDIT: I agree with Shattered_Future.

I listened to Ghost Reveries recently; it still feels to me like Opeth peaked at Still Life and has been declining since.

:D Indeed. The album hit me really hard because of the time I purchased it. It didn't (and STILL DOESN'T) sound like anything I own(ed). Orchid is precious and I am so happy others reaslize it :)
Anybody that says Shadows Fall is generic metalcore should be kicked in the chin fat.
I'll tell you something, I bought Reroute To Remain on a hunch, I always buy new cd's to hear what they sound like, mainly because there's nothing to do in this town. Anyway...I listened to it and didn't like it that much, so I went back to the store (FYE) and wanted to exchange. I traded it for the album Of One Blood, I randomly picked it. All I can say about that album is ''holy shlt''. I tried to get so many people into these guys. It worked lol
I named warcraft characters after songs on that album nopt to mention I had a very sucessful guild called <Of One Blood>. The album is so awesome! To this day, I still listen to it fully and remains on my list for top 10 greatest metal albums ever recorded.

I know you're not serious when you say this, and I'm not upset or anything, but could you just tell me why Shadows Fall are so pure and perfect? They were my favorite band from the time they released Of One Blood to the time they released The War Within. I just think that they aren't too special in any department at all. Not that they are bad, its just I think there are far more bands that distinguish themselves with a complimentary style and signature sound better than SF.

Also, in my opinion they have regressed with The War Within.

Cain 10-16-2005 02:02 PM

Yeah, I don't much that's interesting about Shadows Fall. Most American Wave of Heavy Metal seems inherently regressive, in that they don't do anything that's really new. It's not very impressive to me, I guess.

RouteOne 10-16-2005 02:03 PM

EDIT: ^^^ Agreed 110% Cain. This "new wave of American metal" is just ridiculous and generic.

No, but by all accounts they haven't improved on those albums, if they are indeed excellent as you seem to be implying. In any case, the music I have heard is remarkably devoid of melody, and I greatly dislike their soloing style.

That's cool. So you haven't heard Of One Blood or With Somber Eyes To The Sky. Well, Cain, when you do listen to them, I assure you..there's melody. And if you really don't see it. I give up with you.

They definitely have melody, but that's not really the point.. most of the melody SF put into their music is the same melodic hooks we have heard over and over again. Sometimes it's better to be devoid of melody if it means avoiding cliche and repetition. It also seems that SF have a couple new songs they really didn't put effort into at all. Stillness and Eternity is Within seem very forced-sounding to me, and both songs have riffs I just can't stand sometimes.

Another problem is that Brian Fair has trouble supporting the melodic lines his band writes; IMO he hasn't released a decent vocal effort on any SF albums yet.

And I have Of One Blood.

what album is The Twilight Is My Robe on ?

i was wanting to buy an Opeth cd, i got into them recently dnt know a whole lot of songs though...only bout 15 or so...but i was wondering what a would be a good album to start with ?

Nah, they haven't been declining. Still Life is my favorite album too, but Blackwater Park and Damnation are both undeniably of the same quality as it--Still Life just strikes me that certain way. GR is lacking a certain je ne sais quois that the other albums mostly had, but it's still great.

Stormrider: that song is on Orchid. I recommend you buy Still Life, because it owns so much. I just listened to it today and it's worth buying just for The Moor and Face of Melinda...but the rest of the songs deliver so much that it's a must-have.

Heh, ok. Clearly I've made a few dents in your opinion of me, but based on what I have heard by Shadows Fall, I see no point in spending money on two albums that may be excellent examples of their kind of music when I know that decline has already set in, in much the same way that major league baseball teams don't want to hire a 40-year-old slugger just because five years ago they hit a lot of home runs per season.

EDIT: My main problem is the vocal style.

They AREN'T perfect...they aren't generic either.

Compare them to, say, Atreyu, or A Perfect Murder or Martyr AD, or any of the other generic metalcore bands out there. Is there a difference? Yes. Shadows Fall just excels at what they do.

They are refreshing and original. Quite a breath of fresh air for the tired, generic American Metal scene.

However, yes, they have taken a step down with TWW. TAOB was MUCH better.
