Oh, and by the way, that was an extremely good explanation of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond." Thanks so much. I didn't understand many of the lines until now, thanks.

DeusExMachina 05-30-2005 03:09 PM

Is this thread doing the "official thread cover band" thing? I think it would be cool to take part in.

guitarded_chuck 05-30-2005 03:09 PM
Tis may be more for the tabs forum but I thought floyd fans might be best found here, but im looking for a GOOD acoustic version of Shine on you crazy diamond. The one of mxtabs is flawed (especially on "You were caught in the crossfire..." and "Come on you target for far away laughter..." parts). I basically just want the chords used to strum too. David Gilmour does an awesome job on his live DVD but it never shows his guitar during those parts so I couldnt learn off the DVD. If anyone can help me out id be eternally grateful! Thanks!
Pick up the June 2005 Guitar World magazine. It has a great tab. That song is so fun to play along to.

Have A Cigar

Come in here, dear boy, have a cigar.

This song is amazing, from the brilliant intro, to Roy Harper's vocals, to Gilmour's solo, to the truly fabulous lyrics. This first line is incredibly simple yet brilliant. Cigars have always been used a symbolism for a sort of reward or present, but are just a symbol, and not a real reward. This fits the song perfectly as it depicts the music industry perfectly as caring about it's rewards only and not about the actual musicians.

You're gonna go far, fly high,
You're never gonna die,
You're gonna make it if you try;
They're gonna love you.

These lines are all very similar so I grouped them together. This shows even more about the music industry. They are salivating over the potential money that they can make from the bands. They see potential and they do everything they can to help the band make it big, because when the band makes it big, the actual industry will make more money than the band.

Well I've always had a deep respect,
And I mean that most sincerely.
The band is just fantastic,
that is really what I think.

These lines show how the music industry pretends to care about the band. They tell the band that they are fantastic, and cannot wait to make money off the band. This part of the song shows how the music industry introduces themself to the band as being extremely supportive and supposedly caring for the band, so they can later make money when the band chooses them as a label.

Oh by the way, which one's Pink?

To me, this is the most important line in the entire song. It shows that the music producers really have no idea what is going on with the band. They don't really care about the band and don't know anything about the band. This line just shows how the industry doesn't really care about the individual members of the band, by using the example of their own band, as the industry man asks which one of the members goes by Pink.

And did we tell you the name of the game, boy,
We call it Riding the Gravy Train.

This would be the chorus of the album and is very important lyrically. The phrase "Riding the Gravy Train" is basically another way of saying to exploit somebody to gain an easy profit, which is what the music industry does to aspiring bands. This line and the last are probably the two most important lines in the entire song, as they really show how the industry operates, they praise the band and encourage them so the bands will choose them in their label, but never care about the actual band, and in the end they just rip the band off.

We're just knocked out.
We heard about the sell out.

These two lines show even more about the industry, as they are thrilled when bands release a sell out album, or in other words, they only love the band when the band is making them money.

You gotta get an album out.
You owe it to the people.

These two lines show what happens when the band isn't making the industry money. When the band isn't making the industry money, the industry gets restless and frustrated with the band. They need the band to get an album out to make more money, but instead say that the people want another album so they don't come off as pushy.

We're so happy we can hardly count.
Everybody else is just green,
Have you seen the chart?
It's a helluva start,

These lines don't seem all that important to me and just further the theme that the industry is obsessed with making money and is happy as long as they are making money.

It could be made into a monster
If we all pull together as a team.

I don't really get this line and would appreciate a little extra help here. I would guess that it is just the industry telling the group to work with them so the industry can make more money. I think it's just the industry pretending to care about the band again, and pretend to be working together while they are just using the band to make money. They just want the band to accept them as a label.

And did we tell you the name of the game, boy,
We call it Riding the Gravy Train.

The chorus again. Yet again it is extremely important and I think that it brings meaning to the previous lines. The phras riding the gravy train, as I already said, means to take advantage of, and so it shows that the industry doesn't want to be friends with the band, and is greedy, just wanting to make money.

Overall, this is a great song with brilliant lyrics. Many people seem to feel that the whole album is about Syd Barrett, but I feel this song is particularly about the music industry, although it easily applies to Barrett. Barrett was kind of overwhelmed by the success he and his bandmates had as an underground psychadelic group in England. I believe that being overwhelmed by the music industry and people's expectations for him turned him onto drugs and led to him going insane. More importantly though, this song relates to the entire music industry perfectly, and its depressing, cynical lyrics describe the industry's problems perfectly.

Hope I did ok, this was my first one. Any improvement ideas would be welcome.

lunch998 05-30-2005 07:37 PM

Nice job, I like it.

thunderzstruck 05-30-2005 07:41 PM

I wish I could have put lines to separate the lyrics from analysis, but don't know how

I bought the magazine right away because of that song transcribed, but it shows it all as lead work. Even though it shows what chords it uses they are extremly complex chords which i just cant figure out and i was wondering if someone could help me out with a good acoustic tab. Anyone? PLEASE

BigTrav415 05-31-2005 01:09 PM

Amazing past few analyses guys.

Here's what it think about
"It could be made into a monster
If we all pull together as a team"
I think it's saying that this band could truly become a huge "monster" in sales and popularity, and that the industry is pretending to become really interested and "pull together" with the band, so the band feels more confident about their talent and abilities, and therefore their ability to generate cash. When, in fact, instead of pulling together, they're really digging their nails deeper itno the band's back to do better.

Just my opinion. Oh, and the thing about

We're so happy we can hardly count.
Everybody else is just green,
Have you seen the chart?
It's a helluva start,

I think this is very important. "We're so happy we can hardly count" I think is just as important a line as "BTW, which one's Pink?" (a reporter actually asked them that once). It's another one of Floyd's striking lines that I remember very well, instead of the somewhat cliche line of "We're so happy we can hardly think straight" or something like that, they're saying "We're so happy we can hardly count" They are obviously referring to how much money the band is raking in for them, and that still, no matter how well the band does, no matter how good a following they have, no matter how they're remembered, money will ALWAYS be held above the band's well being.

"Everybody else is just green" is another line referring to the industry's strategy to encourage the band in order to make more money, by convincing that "everyone else" is green with envy at the amount of talent they have.

"Have you seen the chart?" and "It's a helluva start, it could be made into a monster, if we all pull together as a team" is one long line in my mind, because it's jus convincing the band more and more that they are the best , when in fact the industry tells that to every band. By showing them a gargantua chart of album sales, and encouraging them beyond expectations is just a way to get them to make more money. It's rather circular, really :)

Well, that's my two cents.

robo2448 05-31-2005 01:46 PM

good interpretation. I've always thought the second half of the song was a little harder to understand. Thanks :)

ledhed1 05-31-2005 02:32 PM

Their 2 best albums by far were Dark Side of the Moon, and Wish You were here. they rock.
Animals is also a great album. Gilmour just rocks the guitar.

If someone has it, would they be willing to put up a tab? Preferably a powertab? That would rock. If you don't want to though, no pressure.

bennyl 05-31-2005 03:02 PM

Okay, sorry I'm taking long to get Welcome to the Machine done, but I have exams and stuff, so I won't have it till tommorow earliest. And, for the line "And by the way, which one's pink?" this line has special relevance, because when they first came to america a reocrd producer/manager asked them which one was pink thinking that the name was one of the people in the band.

Hello, everyone. My internet has been down for a while, but it looks like WYWH isn't over yet. WHen should I gat my reveiw in?

I almost had it right

DeusExMachina 06-03-2005 02:09 PM

I'd definitely be down for the Floyd cover thing, but I suck at piano, and Magicbus already called guitar. Unless we want to do a version of some song with a cello. Which would be awesome, but I'm not sure I could record it.

Did anyone else have some sort of problem with needing a password to get on here for the past couple of days? What was up with that?

Walrus Gumboot 06-04-2005 08:51 PM

Yeah, that password thing freaked me out a little

My dad's friend loaned him "Dub Side Of The Moon", it's this reggae cover of the whole album. I love it.

Have any of you heard it?

lunch998 06-04-2005 08:53 PM

Reggae bands and their covers. Crazy guys.

So guys, how bout that WYWH analysis?

Shazzam 06-04-2005 10:20 PM

Sup fellow Floydians.....havn't posted here in a while.

Anyways, my friend said he got tickets to see some Lazer Light show with a Pink Floyd tribute band at the DTE in Detroit, MI.

Have any of you guys heard about, or been to one of these shows?

I can't wait till June 24th.
