Good song to play= Hotel california. Not the hardest, but you need more than one guitar. It's a good crowd pleasing song.
Rock not roll: I'll comment on your review later right now I'm reaaaaaaally tired. |
Don't do the most popular track off of any zeppelin song. So no Dazed and confused, Whole lotta love, Immargrant(sp) song, stairway to heaven, d'yer maker, kashmir....
I suggest doing The Ocean. My friends and I like to play it. |
Also I only chose Zeppelin, because thats what the people at this fair (freshman dorks) would wanna hear. I'd rather play some Cream songs and Yes, but nobody knows them.
EDIT: Also we're not really a band, just a few guys gettin together for this one show. Which makes it even more exciting.
I happen to be one of those freshman dorks so take for me. |

Our version is faster, I throw in more bass drum (I think 32nds work really well with that song). The vocal solo is done on guitar with backing bass (and a second guitar) and drums keeping the whole thing moving. We also shorten the end and have no vocals but it's awesome. |
We need recordings :)
|
Bonzo does it nice on disc 3 of HTWWW. During the verse he uses the bell of the ride instead of the hi-hats, and you can notice his quick heel-toe kicks more.

All the frosh at my school are really small and listen to Linkin Park. |

Im not that tall either but I can tell you I am no linkin park fan. |
Excellent. The ones that don't listen to Linkin Park are poser Led Zeppelin/Black Sabbath fans.
|

If I knew anything about the net I'd send them to you. I have a dvd of our first live performance (we played 2 songs at a recital one of which was the ocean). I'll try to get you a recording (although I think the tempo goes wonky on that one so maybe not that one). |

I cant say Im not a fan of Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin but dont take for this noob to classic rock because I probabally know more than you. :smoke: |
No no, I like them both(Sabbath more, actually). But it's one of those poser issues again. Like the kid with the Zoso shirt.
|
Agreed Sabbath is better than Zeppelin and I dont like the Stairway people.
|
I was thinking The Ocean or Black Dog. But I don't know the solos for either, just the rest. I could always improvise, that's what I do for everything else ;)

My guitarist improvises. Black dog would be good but I think alot of people would have a hard time with it, you have to remember the stick clicks and stuff. |
What scale do each of them use in regards to improv?
|
What scale do each of them use in regards to improv?
I honestly wish I could tell you. For that song I'm not sure. I know hotel california is aolian (sp?) A or B. I know his teacher does stuff though where he'll give him a scale, and play rhythm and get my guitarist to improv. But I can't tell you the scale of most songs we play (I'm beggining to learn some piano and I know alot of theory but in general I don't worry about it.) |
The Zeppelin and Floyd ones are Pentatonics, and I'm just now learning the modes, so there's not much more I can do. Hey Joe uses the e minor pentatonic, so I can improv with that, but not all of Hendrix's stuff uses them. As for the Eagles I'm not sure.
Cream and Pink Floyd use Pentatonic on every song. Fun to play with. |
I wouldn't improvise Hotel California. That solo is great on its own. I was refering to the Led Zep.
|
I pretty sure Black Dog is the b minor pentatonic (7th fret), but I don't have my guitar next to me so I don't remember The Ocean.

Ya, he did at first but we were like, uh no, stop you're killing it. I don't know about the seppelin stuff though sorry :(. I do know however that The Ocean has a wonky time signature, in the verse it's one bar of 8/8 followed by a bar of 7/8, repeat that four times. It took me a while to explain this to my bandmates though, You don't notice just listening to it but when i was transcribing it I relaized it. Since they just used tabs though they didn't notice and were playing it wrong. |

Does anyone else find it fun to disect songs and find out what scales and such are being used? I do :( |
Does anyone else find it fun to disect songs and find out what scales and such are being used?
I do :(
I love to do it. But ofcourse I'm a drummer so it's not usually scales I'm figuring out (yet, I will once I become better at piano). It gives Ideas for when you're writing. :) |
Yeah man i noticed alot of Classic rock people now, like it used to be like rap, pop/punk and that stuff but now classic rock is making a huge come back. all the skaters listen to it and a few more its wierd. but i dont really care cuz classic rock is still amazing.
|
hey FFTL31 is that chuco from boulevard nights?
|

I do
Bob Dylan's chord songs are most often based in C |
There are the same number of black sabbath posers as zeppelin posers. A lot of them are even both.
It sickens me, really. |
Haha.
/me is wearing a black sabbath shirt I'm a real fan tho :P I can tell when some total stranger is pegging me as a poser as I'm walking down the street....it pisses me off. I want to run up to them and be like "YES I KNOW MORE SONGS THAN IRON MAN AND PARANOID!!!!!" |
