I really wish they televised Jeff Beck's set though. :-/
Why didn't they?

superpeer 03-22-2005 11:15 AM

The revolution will not be televised !

Cain 03-22-2005 11:21 AM
Why didn't they?
Knowing Jeff's penchant for resisting any kind of public exposure if he can help it, he probably requested that the footage of his performance be lifted from the program that aired. **** bastard is so amazing at guitar, but he wants to have his head stuck under a hot rod for the rest of his life. Grrrrr. He's the reason I started playing guitar! I want to see him at some point before he quits for good.

nou?

SO, I was thinking Freud was underrated before class today, but now I seem to have lost some respect for his ideas after discussion in class.

Nah, I've posted it numerous times in the thread, mostly at Jake. Haven't been banned yet.

Go eat your lunch !

EDIT: Freud was a dumbass, how can you call him underrated? I don't agree with any of his psychology. I never really bought the id, ego, and superego deal. I mean, on paper it probably seems nice, but I don't really believe they exist as the way he described them to be.

Well, because no one really gives his ideas credit anymore...he's given credit for starting psychoanalysis, but after reading Civilization and its discontents I thought some of his ideas were pretty straight on too...but then our teacher answered a few questions I had and it pretty well turned me around on that.

Jom 03-22-2005 11:46 AM

Yesssss!

I won another free song on iTunes.

:-\... I probably should have saved all mine so I could get a whole album.

Suggestions for songs? You guys know what I tend to listen to :-\

How much of it have you read (out of curiosity)? The basic ideas around those three things are actually not that off, his system wasn't perfect, but not as off as people criticize it as being.

How do you win all of these free songs? :(

Jom 03-22-2005 11:49 AM

I've taken more than my fair share of psychology courses in both high school and uni. My major calls for an extensive psychology background, obviously.

I just mentioned the id, ego, and superego because people who aren't familiar with Freud might be able to recognize what we're talking about by introducing terms they have probably heard before in schooling.

I am not an intellectual elitist.

Intellectual elitism makes the world go 'round.

Eh, I can see a system where we supress our natural desires and temper them, and the clash thus between the ego and the id. I have more problems accepting the superego because I am losing concept of right and wrong.

Fair enough. I just thought that if anything, you'd have to say Freud is overrated. If people know the name of just one psychologist, it'll be Freud; he's generally thought of as a great genius; much of his psychology and his phrases and things have passed very firmly into the public lexicon, etc.

He did have some good ideas, but overall he wasn't that good.

Well yes, I guess I should have added the qualifier to my statement of "by modern pschologists." With people in general you are entirely correct, but I was referring to among the "more educated" people who really don't think much of his ideas. But then our teacher explained that he would reject notions of chemical imbalances and hormonal impulses causing pschological disorders because his argument was so based on mental repressions and the like and I can't really respect that narrow-mindedness.
Also, who is Cain?
1) (Direct) son of Adam and Eve, who killed his brother Abel in the bible, and now inhabits one of the furthest down pits of hell, in Dante's Inferno's vision of hell.

2) A character in the Bourne books.

3) Ripper, with a new name.
