Hmm. I actually really loved the more classic / hardcore vibe of the beginning couple of Reign. Then again, what do i know lol.

gocsa666 02-20-2011 06:08 AM

I find Scurrilous the most emotional or personal to be more precise. Rody is so comfortable with his voice, the emotional range is so wide, and he sounds so passionate sometimes because he's singing his own lyrics which this time around are not about ancient history or a fictional character but about his own life/feelings/observations/whatever.
It's not as much that I think they're poorly written as much as I feel like they were written more to fill a purpose than to express full ideas. While the genuine thoughts and feelings behind each song shine through, the way Rody chooses to word some ideas just seem too...."-insert general idea- + brutality = write it down)".

Totally not trying to make this a bash feast or Rody vs Arif deal though, just to clarify. I just have a childlike appreciation for music that causes me to always except bands to stay the same when I know for a fact they never do. Not that change is bad.
I think the fact that they're writing the music first (just the four guys without any input from Rody, basically) and then Rody comes in to fit some lyrics over it is what contributes to the feel you're describing. He's kinda restricted in a way and this might not be the best way to make an album but it's the way they do it and have always done it and it works for them.

Gonna blast this today. Excited.
I've always loved Kezia the most out of anything from their discog, because to me, its always been the most emotional and passionate thing they've done. Fortress was kind of "soulless" to me really.

I still love the hell out of that album, but I think that this comes really close to Kezia, if it doesn't surpass it.

Weakest track to me though seems like Tapestry. Its just a little lacking compared to a lot of the other tracks on here imo
Hahaha Tapestry is honestly my favorite. I love the bridge. YOOOUUU CANN HAVEE ANNYTHING YOU WANNTT!!

Really isn't a bad song on here though.

Blind 02-20-2011 03:51 PM

I'm somewhere between 10 and 15 listens in and the only song I can't seem to get into is Moonlight.

Yazz_Flute 02-20-2011 04:52 PM

that's funny because Moonlight is one of my favorites.

Pastorius 02-20-2011 06:09 PM

the penultimate one is the best one

Tyler 02-20-2011 06:52 PM

Tongue-Splitter is easily my favourite, so I agree. One of the best thing's they've ever done, and could potentially beat I Am Dmitri for best song they've written.

Yazz_Flute 02-20-2011 07:42 PM

I would definitely cite Hair-Trigger as my favorite at the moment.

Blind 02-20-2011 08:28 PM

Tie between Hair-Trigger, Dunsel, and Termites for me

beso negro 02-20-2011 10:07 PM

lol who the fuck cares about lyrics.
Choosing to not do harsh vocals is a good thing... sometimes it feels juvenile, not "hardcore" and "extreme" and "tough".
you're a pussy then

listened to the new album, couldn't get past "tapestry". damn i guess I have to find a new band to listen to.

Tyler 02-20-2011 10:13 PM

maybe when you hit puberty you'll come back and give it another chance

Dimmu Burger 02-20-2011 11:16 PM

About halfway through my first listen. OMG so good!

Matte 02-20-2011 11:23 PM

Dunsel is sooooo fucking good holy shit. The ending is so dirty.

DBlitz 02-20-2011 11:31 PM

i don't get what negro is bitching about.

the departure of harsh vocals didn't really ruin anything, i barely cared. everything else didn't sound very far off their older stuff (as in they still distinctly sound like pth to me). more entertaining than i expected though.

Dimmu Burger 02-20-2011 11:49 PM

I am a fan of harsh vocals for sure, but he pulls it off so well without them on this record. I don't mind at all. This may end up being my favorite record of theirs.

gocsa666 02-21-2011 07:08 AM

Heh, some teenage kid on Rody's facebook page is bitching about the same things as beso negro. He says there are no growls and it makes him sad:(:D Some of us (including Rody himself) told him to shut the fuck up and grow up..

That riff makes me want to murder.

I am completely blown away by this record and I'm only halfway through.

Excluding C'est la Vie (because I've heard it at least 100 times by now), the highlights right now are Moonlight, Hair-Trigger, and Dunsel. That's... every song I've heard so far.

Sounds a little thrashier than last time around. I don't miss the growls, there doesn't really seem to be a place for them in the new songs, the guitars take up so much room. And it's because of Rody's range that they can take such a large role.

Besides, I never considered PTH's growls to be... necessary.

Johann Hegg and Mikael Akerfeldt are vocalists that do it well. PTH's growls seemed to be a carry-over from the genre they came from, this is an additional step towards transcending that.

no cat meows in this album

incredibly disappointed

DBlitz 02-21-2011 09:47 AM

true, cat meows > dog barks

Yazz_Flute 02-21-2011 04:14 PM

One of the riffs in Moonlight (@2:19) reminds me an awful lot of a riff in Symphony X's "The Divine Wings of Tragedy (@17:22). I don't know if it was intentional or not (probably not) but I thought it was really cool.

Can't decide if the best song is Hair-Trigger, Moonlight, or Dunsel now. It's basically a three-way tie for first.

It's either Moonlight or Dunsel. Or Termites. Or Sex Tapes. Or Tonguesplitter.

Sex Tapes is one goofy song.

Homunculusninja 02-21-2011 05:28 PM

I was recently in a relationship with a red headed girl, one that didnt end well. So goddamn if Hair-Trigger isn't just the best song right now.

Well, it might just be intentional. As far as I know the band loves Symphony X, Rody definitely does, and he also mentioned Russell Allen a couple of time in interviews as one of his all time favorite singers.

Benzilla 02-21-2011 08:38 PM

How much do you want to bet that they're going to get a flood of offers to partner up with To Write Love on Her Arms because of C'est la Vie?

Yazz_Flute 02-21-2011 08:57 PM

If that's a the case it's a damn good homage, it made me want to listen to Symphony X again too. Nostalgia.

someguest 02-21-2011 08:58 PM

I fucking love her vocals in "Hair-Trigger".
