Excellent choices. Is Quadrophenia still a double album on vinyl?

Yep. Live at Leeds is my favorite Who album, but the vinyl version has almost half as many songs as the cd version and I don't like it as much. But for $3, I'm not gonna complain. It's still incredible music.

Lunch 01-16-2006 11:29 AM

Yea, my dad has the original vinyl. It sucks listening to half the material when you've heard all the other songs from the show, but when it originally came out it was amazing.

Hope they´ll be playing Higway Star, Child In Time and Hush

PinkFreud 01-16-2006 12:59 PM

i KNOW theyll do highway star. enjoy that concert. steve morse is such beast on guitar.

Seafroggys 01-16-2006 01:51 PM

Lunch I'm surprised your setlist doesn't have "we're not gonna take it"

My dream list.....I dont' know terribly many Who songs, will go something like this:

Heaven and Hell
Water
Naked Eye
The Punk and the Godfather
Helpless Dancer
Who Are You?
905
The Real Me
Bargain
Christmas
Love Reign O'er Me
Pinball Wizard
Behind Blue Eyes
Won't Get Fooled Again

Encore:
Baba O'Reilly
Go to the Mirror
Trick of the Light
We're Not Gonna Take It

Dragon_Prince 01-16-2006 02:07 PM

No My Generation? :|

Seafroggys 01-16-2006 02:49 PM

meh I'm not too familiar with older Who.

it is a good song, so put it before Won't Get Fooled Again.

robo2448 01-16-2006 03:09 PM

I'm gonna give this dream setlist a try:

Baba O'Reily
The Real Me
Heaven and Hell
Young Man Blues
Who Are You
Armenia, City in the Sky
I Can See For Miles
Amazing Journey=>Sparks=>Eyesight to the Blind=>Christmas=>The Acid Queen (need a little Tommy medley in there, but I'd love to see the whole album performed if this dream concert doesn't have time limits)
Bargain
The Real Me
I'm Free
Water
Naked Eye
The Kid's Are Alright
I've Had Enough
Summertime Blues
5:15
Shakin' All Over
Love, Reign O'er Me

Encore:
Pinball Wizard
My Generation
We're Not Gonna Take It
Magic Bus

That would be a really long concert. I can't limit it though. I'd be happy to see them no matter what they play.

Edit- Okay I managed to cut out 4 songs. It was tough. I'm not good at cutting things down.

JohnXDoesn't 01-16-2006 03:14 PM

^^That set list would kill the old geezers. :smash:
^^That set list would kill the old geezers. :smash:
Well if it's a dream setlist, it would be from around 1970 when they were in good shape and could handle a setlist like that:p

And yes, I'm aware that a bunch of the songs I picked are from after 1970. I mean, it's a dream setlist, so we can just ignore things like that.

Seafroggys 01-16-2006 04:49 PM

Magic Bus at the end?

meh, I could never really get into that song.

Lunch 01-16-2006 09:01 PM

It actually works as an end song surprisingly well, like on Live at Leeds and Live at the Isle of Wight. I probably just forgot We're Not Gonna Take It when I was making my list because of so many songs I was trying to put on there.

Pete sticiks his foot in his mouth. Again. Needs to apologize. Again. And the latest issue of MOJO Magazine has a 15 song "Tribute CD" to the Who. Who own the cover, as well:

From Pete's Diary:

12 January 2006
MOJO Magazine - my letter of apology

This letter was sent by email and received on January 7th.

With reference to my interview in the current issue:

Dear MOJO

Thanks for great Who front cover.

I need to be quick to point out that I went off painting pictures about the early days of British rock, and ended up appearing to bad mouth Bob Dylan, The Band and the wonderful Ronnie Hawkins into the bargain.

I was trying to show how over here in the UK in the early sixties we looked at the old guard of 'white' rock 'n' roll (even Elvis) as being almost 'washed up'. I know it sounds crazy now. We still worshipped the old guard: Eddie Cochran, Elvis, Buddy Holly, The Everly Brothers, Ricky Nelson, all of them. But people like me believed R&B artists (and only the black ones like Chuck Berry, John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley and Jimmy Reed) were the ones we needed to emulate. It seemed to me, and I suppose I was one of those Luddites who for some time wanted Dylan to keep churning out acoustic records, that hiring Ronnie Hawkins' old band as his backing group, Dylan was groping in the dark. They were from the old school in my eyes. That band turned out to be one of the finest practitioners of modern music (and Ronnie Hawkins records are still on my jukebox). Dylan doesn't need my puffs, but neither should he or The Band be subject to slurs I didn't intend to make. (See my web site front page apology).

One other point, perhaps again the paint was applied too thickly. Roger's "cousin" I spoke of in the Quadrophenia piece was indeed a powerful, handsome and very cool White City mod, but the story of the six man murder was apocryphal. I should not have repeated it. Roger and I look enough like Wandsworth Prison inmates (on the cover of MOJO magazine) as it is without guilding the lily.

Cheers,

Pete
I just bought Quadrophenia and Live at Leeds on vinyl
I was lookin thru my dad's collection and found he has duplicates of all of the Who he owns on vinyl, which I think is every album, short of "My Generation"

Quadrophenia sounds better on vinyl than remastered CD, thats for sure...

JohnXDoesn't 01-21-2006 05:40 PM

^^Yeah, Quad sounds pretty good on LP. And for a long while it's the only Quad I listened to. Now I listen to it streamed in from my music service and I must say I enjoy it more. I hear things I didn't hear before. All the little subtleties come out. That's why I enjoy it more.

Oh, and Pete is God. That is all.....

zabbit82 01-21-2006 07:33 PM

Yeah, its not as bass heavy, so you can hear more of the drums 'bite'. There are different amounts of reverb remixed here and there too.

Its funny, because a few days after I bought Quad on CD, my dad took a listen to it and after he heard it all the way through, he said 'there wasn't an original mastered CD?'. He must have listened to it a billion times through as a teen. Not that its an obsession for him....

It's just that good :)

Lunch 01-21-2006 09:11 PM

Nothing wrong with listening to Quadrophenia a billion times. It's worth it.

rockinbass17 01-21-2006 11:12 PM

Quadrophenia = the best album ever recorded. Ever.

Lunch 01-26-2006 05:47 PM

I finally got around to really listening to the Royal Alber Hall CDs, and I was really pleasently surprised. They still have so much energy and are just so interesting to hear live. Obviously John isn't there anymore and they are a bit older, so I wouldn't expect their upcoming tour to be quite the same quality, but I'm still greatly looking forward to it.

dr._feelgood 01-26-2006 08:32 PM

I really need to get one of The Who's albums, I only have a Greatest Hits and some songs I downloaded off of Limewire. Which album should I get first?

pigonthewing82 01-26-2006 08:37 PM

I would say Live at Leeds is always a good place to start.

Lunch 01-26-2006 10:54 PM
I really need to get one of The Who's albums, I only have a Greatest Hits and some songs I downloaded off of Limewire. Which album should I get first?
The generic way to do it is to get Who's Next first, even though it's not in my top 4 or 5 Who albums. It's easy to get into though. Or yea, Live at Leeds is a classic. Then get Tommy and Quadrophenia.

Seafroggys 01-27-2006 01:02 AM

Does anyone else here thinks John has/had awesome stage presence?

I'm not being sarcastic either. The way he just stood there, you can see the confidence in his stone-cold face.....he's such a badass without even trying to be.

Though he always tended to stare at Pete and Roger while singing, which might show unconfidence, but whatever, I just love his stance.

Yup, that's a good one. If you see the DVD the crowd is a bit subdued, it being a high profile charity gig and some sort of Royalty being in attendence, I believe. But it kicks up quite a storm, nonetheless. And John sounds great, amirite? Also, do you have the one with the bonus cuts that were added after John's death? ie. I Don't Even Know Myself, etc...?
I really need to get one of The Who's albums, I only have a Greatest Hits and some songs I downloaded off of Limewire. Which album should I get first?
I would recommend the single disc version of Live At Leeds. Especially if your username implies what you usually listen to (Motley Crue kinda stuff?) or Quadrophenia. Both of which kick serious arse. The extended version of Live At Leeds or Live At The Isle Of Wright will also do. But they have Tommy slapped right in the middle. Which will ruin the studio version of it for you forever.

dr._feelgood 01-27-2006 09:15 AM

I hate Motley Crue now for the record I made the username a year ago.

He's got that whole "Yep, I'm amazing at bass" type of presence, so I know what you mean.

John: I think I got the one you were talking about because it has I Don't Even Know Myself. It's on the disc 3 with Young Man Blues, I'm Free, and Summertime Blues.

Hey Lunch. I'm here to whore out my review of Townshends "Empty Glass" for sputnik and to give this thread a healthy bump. So go go go! 'Cause as you well know, I am:
a whore for Pete's solo career.
:p

Oh, and just to add some useful content to this post, here 'ya go. From Pete's Diary:

2 January 2006
Rachel and Pete have five tracks on the IAC charts TOP TEN

Rachel and I now have five songs in the top 10 at IAC. JUST BREATHE, IN THE MIX, SUNRISE and I'M ONE. One of them, PLEASURE SEEKER is not strictly a Rachel/Pete track. So congratulations to Rachel and her co-writer Jo Youle. We have over 25,000 downloads on these five tracks, and the IAC is now topping out at 250,000 visits a day.

I would like to thank the folks at IAC for getting behind Rachel and me in this way: I feel as excited about these hits as I was about my first chart entry with The Who's first single in 1965. I'm grateful to have new fans, and I know Rachel is over the moon.

Rachel and I are talking about the idea of putting out a special EP CD of tracks we do together.

An important point:

True independence in the record industry is hard to define these days. Rachel and I, and the folks at IAC, are all aware that the Rachel Fuller/Pete Townshend 'independent' releases exist in a safety zone not enjoyed by most up-and-coming artists. I hope that all the other brilliant new artists also in the IAC chart will accept that this extraordinary event will attract a lot of interest to IAC and to their new music. I know that IAC are now considering my suggestion that they establish a new chart for artists who enjoy a safety zone of some kind, but I'll leave it to them to decide how to proceed. - Pete Townshend

Seems as if Pete has been busy with his little gal pal lately. Oh, and welcome our newest contributer to this thread, Entwistle. Wherever he is? I expect him to be showing up soon....yet another crazy Who fan....

Lunch 02-02-2006 03:45 PM

Lately I've really been into songs like "Let's See Action","The Relay" and "Join Together". I'm really glad my dad has the 30 Years of Maximum R&B box set so I could get my hands on these tracks. To me they have a lot of power and/or really strong messages that make the music even better. Just great material that I can't believe they couldn't get onto an album (if Who's Next had these songs in the middle instead it would probably be the best album ever).

PinkFreud 02-02-2006 03:56 PM

lunch, still willing to maybe upload the royal albert hall cds? eh? eh? i would pay you in uploads.

Oh yea, I didn't mean to ignore your request, I just forgot. I'm going to put Disc 3 in with Disc 2 because it's only four songs.

Edit: http://www.recordnerd.com/lists/lunch998
If you have any of those in the wanted section it would help me a lot.

Yeah, those are great tracks. The Who have another classic album lying around in bits and pieces. Probably a couple of them. And lets not forget "Long Live Rock", either. Which was a single and showed up on Odds and Sods, and that's it.

Pink, I haven't forgotten about you. I've never uploaded anything to anyone before. What's the best and most effecient way I can get the X material to you, about how long will it take, and can I use my computer for other things while I do it? I have medium DSL. Just some basic info will help me get started in that direction.

Lunch 02-02-2006 04:21 PM

Oh yea, Long Live Rock is one I forgot to mention, as well as the Seeker. Originally I thought Long Live Rock was a little lame and cliche, but recently I've started liking it a lot more. It fits perfectly for the credits at the end of The Kids Are Alright.
