Substitute Inc-The Chase (scene 3)
Intro is a cool little loop with some drums and a few picked and wahed guitar notes. It starts getting faster until the drum beat sets out the beat of the song. Once it is in it is a really cool song. I like the wah guitar in the background, and the bassline. The vocals come in and they are really cool. I love this song, its is great. A really bass driven song, I realise now. As the vocals follow the bassline. I also like the lead guitar. In the second section of it a weird sound comes, sounds sort of like a slide dobro with some flanger thrown in, regardless of what it is it is a great sound. A few "breakdowns" near the end of the song where the drums stop for a second then kick back in. Song ends rather abrubtly, but still nicely. Overall it is a 9.5/10, I will definitely be checking more out of these guys.
Choices:
The (international) noise conspiracy-Capitalism stole My virginity indie
The Clash-Radio Clash really dont know
Stevie Ray Vaughn-Scuttle Buttin' blues
David Bowie-John I'm Only Dancing

P.s Silvermedalmafia, can you make your song titles a bit clearer next time please? :)
Substitute Inc-The Chase (scene 3)

it flows into scene 4.. which finishes it off in a kind of strange way.
but it's no biggie, glad you liked it too

I shall leave this up for a bit for people to check out as it's one of those bands that would be extremely hard to find

manuscriptreplica 11-09-2004 08:37 AM

David Bowie - John I'm Only Dancing

I like Bowie, from what I've heard, but haven't heard much of him. Onwards

Soft acoustic intro, then his unmistakable voice starts kind of grunting away. Cool bass line. He's got lots of weird effects on his voice, which is cool. There's lots of stuff going on. Pretty samey, the bass goes into double time though, which is cool. Longer chorus second time around, I am really enjoying the bass. There's a nice little psychedelic thing in the middle. Pretty samey though, but enjoyable.

6/10

Mos Def - B Boys Will B Boys (Gangsta rap)
Arcturus - Star-Crossed (Avant garde metal)
Spastic Ink - To Counter and Groove in E Minor (Fusion/metal/cool)

Iai 11-09-2004 02:19 PM

Dibbies on Mos Def.

Iai 11-09-2004 02:24 PM

All the matches I'm getting for B Boys Will Be B Boys are from Black Star. Eh, I'm downloading it anyway. Even though I've heard Mos Def And Talib Kweli Are Black Star before, I don't remember that song.

Iai 11-09-2004 02:41 PM

Black Star - B Boys Will B Boys

The song begins with a Mos Def rant about famous people. Talib Kweli then tackles the beat....with a list of namedrops. Is this is a song or an interlude?

"Black Star, shinin' shinin', we in the house!" gets repeated several times, before some scratching. Then the beat just loops with a little improvisation. That's all you get for your 2.36.

If I have heard this before, I'm not surprised that I don't remember it. It's basically an interlude. Hell, Black Star are a great project, and Talib Kweli and Mos Def are two of the best rappers in the world. But this is probably the last song I'd suggest for someone. There's half a verse of vocal tradeoffs, and that's all the indication this track has of their collectively talents. Black Star are unique and great. This isn't.

Iai 11-09-2004 02:44 PM

My tracks -

Asian Dub Foundation feat. Sinead O' Conner - 1000 Mirrors (hard to classify!)
McFly - That Girl (50s rock'n'roll/00's pop)
Spice Girls - Viva Forever (pop with some beautiful flamenco-esque guitar)
The Roots - Return To Innocence Lost (hard-hitting socially-conscious beat poetry)
Jeff Beck - Nadia (drum'n'bass backing, slide guitar, Asian-style melodies)
Hector Berlioz - Marche Au Supplice (March To The Scaffold), from Symphonie Fantastique (Romantic/Classical)
Lauryn Hill - Lost Ones (hip-hop)

Sorry, I just had to edit the title.

Listning is now listening.

Bartender 11-09-2004 03:22 PM

I was wondering how many people noticed that.

Iai 11-09-2004 03:37 PM

I did. I thought it was funny.

Bartender 11-09-2004 03:47 PM

I'm a fairly big fan of the stuff I've heard from Jeff, You Had it Coming, etc, so to be fair I'm expecting to like this.
Jeff Beck - Nadia - 3:50

Starts off with some really bluesy, lonely-sounding solo guitar. Loving it so far.

Some gentle synthy sounds are building in the background, and after 50 seconds or so, percussion cuts in, with a fairly fast-paced, very techno/dance-y beat.

Not much to say, really, as this is what happens throughout the song. That beat in the background, with synths rising, falling and swirling also more or less in the background, and the one guitar, presumably Jeff's, soloing somewhat mournfully over it.

I have a real taste for instrumental music anyway, which probably helps, but this was a great listen.

8.5/10

Songs;
Skindred - Set it Off, Nobody, Babylon, Selector or Pressure (Ragga)

I shoudn't of picked that track, it was the one I was listening to at the time. I was pretty much listening to it subconsciously, and wasn't aware it was an interlude :) It is indeed Talib Kweli and Mos Def rapping from the Black Star album. If you want a good song from it, I recommend:
- Astronomy (8th Light), or
- Brown Skin Lady
The pair have been compared to A Tribe Called Quest's Phife and Q-Tip, so I recommend this to everyone.

Iai 11-09-2004 04:38 PM

I'll download the album soon. I heard it and really liked it, but wasn't paying too much attention to it. Not the attention it deserved, anyway.

Bartender 11-10-2004 06:30 PM

With that gone..bump.

manuscriptreplica 11-10-2004 10:07 PM

Curse your underground music, I can't find any of your songs. And Soulseek won't let me view your files (as usual)

manuscriptreplica 11-10-2004 10:10 PM

Disregard that last comment, after searching for something that Gordian Knot, I found an Einsturzende Neubauten song. So Dibs

Bartender 11-10-2004 10:47 PM

Einsturzende Neubauten - Silence is Sexy

An interesting listen, to say the least. It starts off with a bit of silence, then some random sounds, sound like someone is playing around with a record player or something. Then very droning bass and vocals, acoustic bass is very nice. The singer is very close to the mic, you can hear his lips making sounds, him swallowing etc. There is a bit of a pause, which creates a bit of tension, quite cool really. I was expecting something really heavy here, but only drums come in, slow, with brushes. The singer is only saying 'silence is sexy, so sexy'. He finishes another verse with 'silence isn't sexy at all'. He starts speaking in German, I think (judging by the name, they sound very German). At about 4:15 there's some feedback noise. It gradually gets more bust, until about 5:50, when a crowd start singing 'silence is singing' and clapping along. Quite cool :thumb:
7/10

From now on, we should use the thumbs up and thumbs down Post icons, if we like or don't like the song :smash:

Songs:

Arcturus - Star-Crossed (Avant garde metal)
Spastic Ink - To Counter and Groove in E Minor (Fusion/metal/cool)
Latryx - Bad news (hip hop)
Lightning Bolt - Forcefield (Instrumental noise)

Bartender 11-10-2004 11:40 PM

Hah, if you got a live version, that means there's at least three different versions of it floating around. Hardly surprising from Neubauten, since they seem to have about a dozen different versions of every song, but it makes recommending them in Forced Listenings a complete arse.

Not a dibs, yet. Working on an essay.

manuscriptreplica 11-11-2004 12:32 AM

It wasn't live it was exactly 7:00 and a random crowd started cheering.

Bartender 11-11-2004 12:38 AM

Oh. Well my version is only six minutes anyway.

blueyxd 11-11-2004 04:32 AM

yeah, I'll dib to that. We 3 are the highest posters in this thread... I'm not really surprised either.

Pete, how was JBT??

manuscriptreplica 11-11-2004 04:35 AM

Wow 82 posts for me (now 83) I'm such a spammer

Now I've got broadband, I'll reckon I'll start downloading all the songs, I need some more underground avant-garde raphop fusion grindcore jazzhop hard-bop experimental stuff.

blueyxd 11-11-2004 05:34 AM

Latryx - Bad News

Piano loop, a bit Moby in style, he starts saying stuff right away, drums kick in.
The piano and drum loop repeats with the rapping over the top for a while

The drums stop for a bit at just the right time, before they get too anoying. Just piano and rapping for a bit. Drums come back in again. This happens a few times to keep the music vaired.

There's not much to say about the music, must be a lyrics one.

So, it seems to be about people talking, gossip, news... that kind of thing. "Bad news travels fast, if its about you, you'll probably hear it last" Rapping is thick and fast, there isn't much of the song that goes without it. The word "talk" is used a hell of a lot.

It's kind of hard to follow, but easy enough on these first listens to pick out the main idea: being careful of what you say (I think). The positive message emerges later on in the song.

Towards the end, the rapping stops, some horns come in for a short while and then the song ends.

It's smooth, though I kind of lost interest a bit, but the drums coming in and out brought me back, otherwise the music didn't really seem to matter. He has good rhythm and endurance for rapping those passages with not much of a break.

It was ok, not something I could actively listen to though.

7/10

AMAZING! one of the best gigs i've ever been too. He played a 2 and a half hour set and I loved every minute. There was only about 200 people there which i'm told by my austrailian mate that this would be an incredibly small gig in aus. It seemed that every austrailian in manchester was there though! I got to meet him after the gig and had my photo took with him and got my album signed

Still in your debt for introducing me to him blue :thumb:

blueyxd 11-11-2004 06:13 AM

:D
Awsome, 200 is pretty small, when I saw him there were at least 2000 people, and would have been even more in the state capitals. Glad you liked it.

Is that album Sunrise over Sea? That album is like the first one ever to reach the billboard number 1 album in Australia on an independant label.

The Postman Syndrome - Hedgehog's Dilemma

This song rawks, it starts with a cool arpegiated riff, with some vocals. This continues on for a bit. Then some bass comes in, i'm glad to see there's no root notes, it follows the riff. It's cool sounding. He almost has a Maynard element to his singing. Then the chorus comes in, which is much heavier, and he goes to the hardcore vocals, which I've always had a strong dislike for, and this is no exception. His clean vocals over the heavy bits are great, he has a very strong voice. I like the bassist of this band too, his tone is excellent. There is a little quiet bit, around the 5 minute mark, which I like. The drummer is good in this bit too. Then it ends with a chorus out.

9/10, i didn't like the hardcore vox, everything else was flawless. Thanks, Blueser :thumb:
