Barret couldn't touch Gilmour on lead.. But he was a good rhythm player.. (From what I've heard)
And yeah, I see that I double posted.. This site is super slow, must have bumped enter or something.
You know you can delete your posts, right? As far as Barret goes, Gilmour is definitly a head above him, although Barret is a more... interesting lyricist. Then again, Barret's lyrics are more "interesting" than anybody else. |
I think Barrett was great on acoustic, but overall he can't touch Gilmour.
but Gilmour is, in my opinion, one of the best rock guitarists of all time.
Considering all the great solos he's written, I would say so. He's definitely one of the most unique in his tone and overall sound. |
in terms of "interesting"ness, i'd prefer barrett, and he is great musically too but musically i prefer gilmour
|
I prefer the Gilmour Floyd....Syd is good but A little strange
|
Barrett era Floyd is great if your in the mood for something different. I've been listening to PATGOD a bunch lately.
NP: Syd Barrett - No Good Trying |
I love PATGOD, it's a great album. The guitar on it isn't amazing, but interesting. Lot's of different sounds created with the guitar/keyboards (like with later Floyd) and some nice rythym guitar.
What does the NP: mean? Like what you're listening to or something? |

NP: Syd Barrett - No Good Trying
Yeah, PATGOD grows on you so much. I've also been listening to Madcap Laughs a lot lately, it grows on you a lot. |
'sup Floyd thread....
I was just doing my regular posting in the Who thread and remembered I wanted to share this wallpaper with you Floyd fanatics. For those who might not have it. When I came across it I thought of you guys because I'm not a huge Floyd fan, but am a big wallpaper whore. Enjoy. :) http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/7193/pinkfloyd0wj.jpg |
I think Barrett was way better. What he did was just so much more interesting, less commercial, and way more tripped out than most of the Gilmour stuff.
|
Heh, that's pretty cool. Thanks.
|
Syd had a more unique guitar style, he would of become so much better if he didn't psyche out. One of the many prodigys to be cut short in his career.
Gilmour on the other hand is a guitar idol. He may not be a speedy player but he certainly has developed his own defined guitar sound, and the way he's set up such a massive effects system is pretty awesome. He does tricks with the guitar that I've only heard elsewhere from Boston's Tom Scholz, and thats only because Scholz is just a technical genius with sound recording. |
Awesome background, John. Thanks.
Gilmour is definitely my favourite of the two. He is also more technically accomplished. However, Syd had some great ideas, and a certain ingenuity that made his guitarwork a delight. |
I own Dark SIde Of The Moon...thats all
|

NP: Syd Barrett - No Good Trying
123. Actually the Barrett era is my least favorite Floyd era, but there's a few songs I like. |

You need more Floyd! |
i dont intentionally listen to pink alot but when i hear one song i need all of their albums out laid on the floor with me listening to them no matter what
|
I'm not obsessed with Pink Floyd, but I know I like them a lot because I have more of their albums than my dad who likes them just as much as I do.
|
123. Actually the Barrett era is my least favorite Floyd era, but there's a few songs I like.
Yea I'm the same way about that....some of it is just too hard to understand |
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/7193/pinkfloyd0wj.jpg
Yeah, a shop near me is selling a gigantic poster of that. I had no money at the time! That is really effing cool, though. Thanks. |
I want to get that poster and put it in my front hall. My momwould flip. My dad
would say cool and my brothers would ask who pink floyd is |
I've seen that poster around. It's pretty funny.
Old school avatar for Riva. Syd's guitar playing is alright. It's not technically great, but it is creative. In terms of technical skill, I think there's no denying that Gilmour pwns Barrett. |
Yea it's just that Syd was so creative...but hard to understand.
Gilmour is definaly the better guitarist |
I like Syd's music. But, I do think the music got better in later years.
|
David Gilmour > Syd Barret
In terms of guitar playing and musical skill. I really wasn't into that early Floyd stuff. But 'DSOTM' 'WYWH' 'Animals' and 'The Wall' are probably the four best albums in a row for a band. (Or did I miss one in there?) |
This thread is very hard to find without subscriptions.
Anyways, Gilmour's playing fascinates me. "Careful With That Axe", and the "Echoes" funky part, for example, I really like how he throws a lot of arpeggiated chords in there. That's something I'd like to pick up. |
I love the part in Echoes after the "whales in labor" part. Good times. Gilmour is awesome.
|
I have WYWH, DSOTM and Meddle. And was considering either Saucerful Of Secrets or Animals for my next album. I really liked Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun. So what do you recommend?
|
Get Animals first. Also get The Wall before Saucerful Of Secrets.
|
NP: Fat Old Sun
This song is so great. I love Gilmour's vocals on it. |
I really prefer Dave's vocals to Rogers
