Skoidats- Skinhead Hop
Starts with some static, then some really dusty sounding horns. I like the beat. Very "hop" like. Makes me want to bob up and down. Not liking the singing in the accapella, lame, sock-hop kinda style. The rest of the singing is pretty good. I'm liking the horns, very old sounding. Sax solo is sweet. I like the guy who shouted "skinhead hop" in the background. So far, it's sounding good, but not really my style. Pretty slow beat continuing through the whole thing. Fairly ok through and through. Definetly not my style. 7.5/10 Reccomendations: Senses Fail- Cover of Suicidal Tendencies "Institutionalized" Devo- Too Much Paranoias Against All Authority- In on Your Joke (Christ on a Crutch) Catch 22- Keasby Nights Stiff Little Fingers- Johnny Was |
I knew all the songs so I went to review my favorite just because I felt like it.
CATCH 22 - Keasbey Nights Starts with muted acoustic guitar, then a little riff and stragiht to the horns. F'ucking awesome horns in the vein of good ol' Catch 22. Starts now the verse, which is really good which suddenly changes rythm to come into a cooler and a little more calmed verse. The song now seems to go up with Thomas vocals but...no. It stops everything and horns sound, then enters everyone and it starts the chorus. This chorus' catchyness is hard to express in words so onto the post chorus, more cool horns, and goes back again to the pre-verse, verse, pre-chorus, chorus and post chorus. Now enters the bridge with the main riff and some hop! hop! hop! vocals. Then a calmed down chorus with just vocals, when it enters a really cool drum backing and the real chorus. The main riff again that serves as an outro and the song finishes. Everything about this song is perfect so it doesn't deserve less than a 10/10. And there's better songs on this album. Yes, it's that good. Add me on soulseek and send me a message if you want to write a review, my name is also albert_bass. I'm going with some spanish songs: NON SERVIUM - Punks y skins (street punk/oi) SKA-P - Villancico (3rd wave) AGUA BENDITA - Billie Joe (ska-punk) CELTAS CORTOS - Haz Turismo (celtic rock) |
Agua Bendita- Billie Joe
This song starts out with a bass drum. Then a pop-punk-ish guitar riff starts out. Then a really weird horn comes in. Another horn, a trumpet I think, comes in. The trumpets stop, but the guitar/ bass drum are still going and a Spanish guy starts singing something I can't understand, because it's in Spanish, but can kind of pick out "Billie Joe". A drum roll- the song kicks in with a ska guitar riff and a nice bass line. Then the trumpets start for a second and some spanish guys are whistling and yelling like spanish guys do, then back to the song. The song continues for about 30-40 seconds and another whistling/yelling segement, then back to the song/chorus. The song slows down and it's just the guy singing and the guitar for about 14 sec. then a drumroll and back to the main song/chorus for the remainder of the song. I'd say it would've been better if I could've understood the lyrics, but it was still pretty awesome. I liked it a lot. Well this is an amzing band. Very country sounding vocals in the intro. Slow start, then it speds up with the verse "down by the pumkpkin patch" It keeps going at that upbeat pace. I really enjoy the horns. This band seems to have alot of diffrent instruments. The Song slows down again by the middle of the song. then speeds up yet again. I dont think i would get bored listening to this song for atleast an hour. I havnt checked out alot from this band.. but from what I have Iv enjoyed. 9/10 Phat Bastard http://www.myspace.com/phatbastard - Skull Skank The Heatskores http://www.myspace.com/theheatskores - The day the heatskores died The 3Tards http://www.myspace.com/the3tards - 3Tarded |

So at first.. I'm thinking "wait, I thought this was a ska band?" and.. I keep thinking that. This is a fast, loud and low quality punk song that comes off as it would be a psychobilly song, but it's not evident in the music. I'm just getting a psychobilly type vibe because of their logo and the style of singing, and the occasional guitar riff. Wowsers! About half way through the song the singer yells very loudly and for a long time!!! It was kind of scary . IT feels like it's going to end, but everything starts playing again, gradually gaining tempo, oh god! what's going to happen?? IS IT GOING TO END? WILL HE SING A FEW MORE LINES? You don't know, until it ends. And it was just fancy bullcrap! This is a really good song to pump you up to rape people, and the bass is good. 8/10 My Recommendations: The Skalars - Wishing for You (Ska) Youth Brigade - What Will the Revolution Change? The Slackers - International War Criminal
I have heard one good Slacker song, and I'd like to hear more. It starts with a cool organ-like thing, and then goes right into the lyrics. It keeps the same, more rock-ish beat, then goes into the ska beat. I really like the guys voice, which doesn't sound familiar like the one on "Wasted Days." The lyrics are pretty awesome, especially for a ska band. I love the music, it's very pure and original ska. It changes between the two beats during the chorus and verses. "Weapons of destruction, they are gasoline and petroleum." Ah, these is a really ace song. This is going to get me into more of The Slackers. There's nothing better than a ska song with great lyrics. I have never heard this band before, but I think they formed from Aus Rotten. Anyway, I love crust, so I thought I would check them out. It starts of relatively slow. The singing comes in, and is not fast and growled like I expected, you can understand him realy well. It carries on like this for a while. Stops and then speeds up. The singing stays pretty much the same throughout. Overall its a pretty standard crust/hardcore punk song, but its enjoyable. And I will be checkign them out again 9/10 My Dibs Out of the blue - System F William Orbit - Adagio for strings soulseek - Bigdavefromdarlington |
Out of the Blue - System F
It starts off like a typical dance rave beat, and I start shaking my head. Dave Robinson is the coolest person I know... It has a little drum breakdown then this trance-like noise excavates. Also there is hint of other beats that are coming in, I like the songs trance style. It makes you want to get up and go dance. Then this amazing sound comes in, and it really takes you away, it's very beautiful and pensive sounding. Then it goes into a faster, more awakening version of the same sound. It has a huge drum roll in the middle, then goes back to the same beat. I love this song, it's very relaxing and almost emotional. I didn't think I'd like trance as much as this. Then it goes back to a more down-to-earth sound, and takes away from that more beautiful sound, to a more abrasive one. It then goes back to the nice sound, and ends similar to how it started. This was a very good song, I didn't know trance could be this well done. I will definitely check out more in the future. 7.5/10. Yikes, this is pretty shitty for all the praise they're getting. I was expecting something spectacular, but this is pretty bad. It kicks off with a tiny instrument thing, with a really really really bad bass tone. The Tone makes me want to kill myself. The Bass reaks up the whole song, because you can hear it at all times. It doesn't blend into the guitar or vocal tone at all. It sticks out like a sore thumb. Not only is the Bass tone bad, but the Singers voice is so boring. It sounds like one of those singers you'd hear in a rock band that they play in the dentists office. One of those Alternative bands that came out from 95 - 2000 that had a hit but you never heard from again. After about a Minute and 10 seconds it goes into a part where the singer is dealing out some "na-na-na-na-na's" and it just sounds bad, extreamly bad. I can't believe all the good things i'm hearing from this band, because they're so CRAPPY! But there is one good thing about this song, when it ends, Laurel Aitken - Jamboree comes on, and that is a damn good song. Starts with slow pumped guitar riff accompanied by lazy drums. The vocals match very well. The female singer sounds pretty unique, somewhat masculine but really distinct and interesting to listen to. The bridge then starts building up with repeated more higher pitched lyrics. The fast parts the chorus and quite melodic. The song then reverts back to the second verse with the slow guitar and spaced drums. The second extended high-energy chorus ends with rapid drums and random guitar slamming. Overall, the song is very good. I really liked the verse and chorus but I didn’t care for the bridges with the high-pitched singing because they sounded out of place. I saw the guitarist from Modern Life Is War wearing their shirt last night, so that's one of the reasons I'm checking them out. The intro starts very nicely and is very light. Then it delves into a heavier, more metal guitar. The singer comes in and his voice is very chilled and deep. The singer then starts singing different, it sounds sort of like Jello constipated. I keep being reminded of System of A Down, it's somewhat similar. The same metal guitar keeps up through the song, and the singer continues to do what it is he's doing. This song has very little diversity as far as within the song. However, during the song he actually sings and it sounds nice. Near the end he sings very generically. I think this band has a lot of potential but I really wasn't digging it. Singer has a good voice. It's not punk or ska, which is what i like always listen to, but its still decent. Starts off with no intro, straight into verse, without anything before whatsoever. Two singers singing teh entire time, one dominating the other, but he sounds better anyway. Guitar is average, drums are average bass is average. At least its hardcore without the real real screaming, but its still hardcore. A little bit of double bass there, but nothing real special about the song at all. I won't listen to it again probably, but i might give it to my friend Roche, he likes hardcore and all. This was the only song that I hadn't heard, so I went with it. It starts off with a pretty simple and short guitar intro, and then a typical drum beat with the bass, snare, and high hat come in. At the same time, the rhythm guitar comes in. after a couple of measures, the horns come in, they're pretty catchy, but don't play too long. Finally we get into the first verse, which of course, i cannot understand. The verse immediately goes into the chorus. The chorus isn't as catchy as i would have liked it to be. After the chorus, they play the same thing they did for the intro. There's a short bridge, and the singer starts half singing, half talking, and the then there's another chorus. After that, it slows down, and the songs over. It was good, but a little boring, and pretty slow the whole time. I also wish the horns would have played more. 7/10 Recommendations: Cro-Mags - Hard Times [Hardcore] The Croix - Fight For Freedom [Hardcore-Punk] RuSkaJa - Gopstop [Russian Ska] Spring Heeled Jack - Rufus Shakeedoo [Ska] Anti-Heros - Hate Edge [American Oi!] AIM: Dave Toopes, Soulseek: DaveToopes |

The song starts off with an irritating noise and what sounds like your in church. After that the drums get going and the song starts. I can actually hear the lyrics and the rhyming is pretty good and the guys voice is imo really great. I really like the chorus, it is real catchy. I have never heard a song by these guys before but this one is pretty awesome. I listen to a lot of British Oi so this was kinda different in a way because they are american. Great song, I don't know if I will download more of their stuff but overall, 7/10 Recomendations The Adverts - Bored Teenagers (Punk) Talking Heads - Psycho Killer (Post Punk) The Varukers - Will they ever Learn (Street Punk) Chron Gen - Jet Boy Jet Girl (Punk) |
Man it was hard to pick out of this one, so many excellent songs. Well Chron Gen's "Jet Boy Jet Girl" is actually total shi'te compared to the Damned one but who's counting. In the end, I have decided to do...
Talking Heads - Psycho Killer Wonderful simple bass line opens the song, then come the odd synth and guitar flavourings that one would expect from The Talking Heads. David Byrne's perfect post-punk voice then comes in, singing some very odd lines about his inabilty to sleep due to his bed being on fire. Then of course comes the famous verse, ques't ce que indeed (excuse poor French). The whole song remains pretty similar all the way through, so unless you're a pretty dedicated post-punker it's probably not your cup of tea, but for those with good taste and an attention span longer than that of the common gnat it's an absolute treat. And considering this is off Talking Head's "77" album, it's creepily topical (The Summer of Sam, David Berkowitz's New York killing spree occured in 77, for all the serial-killer ignorant among you) THE SCORE If you're cool enough to like post-punk oddness : 10 If you're not : 6 Oh cat-shi't. I have been meaning to check this band out just to prove my distaste for nu-metal. I figured you can't knock something until you've tried it, so let this be my manifestation that I dislike this genre. It starts off with someone talking about cutting and mutilating the innocent. Very mature on their part. Then the generic, nu-metal guitar chords come in, with a pretty cool background music. It's still all about power with occasional outbreaks of riffs. It's very electronice, and then the singer begins to scream, or whatever. This sounds very hardcore-esque and it's not as bad as I thought. The chorus starts cool with a cool riff. The vocals are horrible. The guitar work is pretty excellent, but at the same time very generic. The singer has a very metal-like scream, but he does not sing once. He continues the same type of scream throughout the entire piece. Of course it breaks out into riffs and solos incessantly during the song. I dislike the singing, the guitar work is good, but it's boring. I don't think I'd ever listen to them again, they are really boring. Metal and I do not get along very well... I think if he sung a bit then maybe it would add a cooler, more diverse, and less boring effect. He sounds like a blockhead. I really wanted to hear the behind enemy lines song but I couldn't find it on bloody LimeWire. Anyway I have heard a song from these guys before and it wasn't my cup of tea but I decided to give it a go. The song starts off simple and eventually the guy starts singing. Straight away I realise this is not going to be my thing. After a bit some acoustic action starts happening and the song surprisingly gets better. The chorus is pretty good and I am starting to get into it. The song is ok but I don't think I will download anymore of their stuff. 5/10 Recommendations Resistance 77 - Against the Odds (Oi) Crass - Systematic Death (Anarcho) The Avengers - We are the one (Punk) The Jam - The Eton Rifles (Pop Punk/Power Pop) |

This is the only Rockabilly song that I know of that The Clash did. It's off of London Calling. The song starts out with a cool bass line and Mick Jones going, "Drive! Drive!". Paul Simonon was a cool bass player. The guitar solo is pretty cool. The song has a really nice rockabilly feel to it. The song is about someone's girlfriend or wife, leaving them after they just bought this brand new cadillac. I haven't listened to much Rockabilly so I chose this song. The start of the song sounds like another song I have heard before but I can't quite think of what it is. They pluck a few strings and then it goes ooooooooo, something like that. The singing starts singing and the lyrics are pretty cool straight away and the chorus is pretty good also. Later in the song they have a cool guitar solo and the song is pretty good. The rockabilly sound is pretty awesome, although I haven't heard much I might check more rockabilly out in the future. 7/10 Recommendations The Ruts - In a Rut (Punk) UK Subs - Facist Regime (Punk) Bruce Springsteen - The River (Rock) The Germs - Caught In My Eye (Punk) |

Begins with a cool riff using light distortion, a little feedback and a rhythmic drumbeat. At first it seems like it’s an intro building up to something however it’s also used as the verses. The vocals are defiantly that of a punk band, angry and gritty. Which isn’t bad. The chorus has a little more energy, the guitars a little more pumped and the singer screams in a subtle way. Midway through the song there’s a break with something that could resemble a solo. The end of the song consists of the chorus being repeated multiple times. I would of liked for the song to have gotten faster or to be shorter. It’s defiantly too simple to be this long. For what it is it isn’t too bad though. I haven't listened to a song by this band in 4 years. I think I just want to hear what they're like now. I think the summer of 6th grade was the last time... It stars off with the guitar that I recognize. It's a really good intro, and then he starts to sing. It's very typical of Hot Water Music, I really like his voice. The backing guitar is playing really high pitched riffs, it's not a bad effect though. His voice drags a lot, which is typically of emo, and I like it. The guitar work is very consistent, and very solid. After a lot of singing, it stops for some guitar soloing, then goes right back into the vocals. It goes softer almost and it's very cool. Near the end the guitar goes quiet and he starts to sing for a bit, then the other instruments come back in nicely. The song ends this way. I liked this song a lot, I always have liked Hot Water Music, I'm just too nostalgic to download any of their stuff anymore. 9.5/10. Since I heard the aus-rotten song already and I don’t like Jawbreaker, I decided to go with behind enemy lines, a band I’ve been wanting to check out for a while now. The song starts off with a guitar riff that stays the same basically the whole song. The singer has a pretty cool scream, and it seems at times that there are two singers. One has a more pitched scream. The intro basically goes on for 1 minute, then the drums fully come in, and the pace picks up and continues on with about the same pattern. In all it’s a very good song, I think I’ll be downloading some more BEL soon. 8,5/10 Recommendations: Mad sin- cannibal superstar (punk/psychobilly/) Guérilla poubelle-Exception culturel& traffic d’armes (french punk) The peacocks-too good(punk rock’n’ roll) Nasum-Blinded (grind) Bérurier noir-macadam massacre (anarcho?/french folk punk?) I've heard a bit of Anti Pasti, but I'd like to hear more. It starts off with plane sounds dropping bombs. The drums, then guitars come in and I really like the intro. The singer starts and I really like his voice, it's very different. It's abrasive and nicely pitched. It's very melodic too. The same chords continue and the singer continues to sing a long the same chords. The chorus is really cool, lyrically. Near the end the music stops, then the drums, and then guitar come in. It ends with a siren noise and it adds an amazing effect. This is a short, solid song. I'll be getting this album. This song is punk. 10/10. This is honestly one of my favorite songs. The dual male/female vocals sound amazing as do the lyrics. The bass starts out, drums come in after a few bass strums, Dave Trengas voice comes in and the guitar hits. Threw out most of the song its all the same guitar and bass riff, but it changes up a little. After the first Verse a womans voice takes over. Near the end both Daves and the womens voice are singing simultaniously and it sounds rad. This is a very good song. The lyrics are based around Anti-sexism and it seems there is a story going with the lyrics about a certain women being raped and the court dismissing the case cause "it all comes down to her word against his." Aus-Rotten are a wicked band. My Recommendations: Dirt - Wooden Gun(anarcho) F-Minus - Dragons Teeth(Crust) Grimple - Grow Up(punk) Johnny Cash - Hurt(country?) I love this song. It is great for him being that old. Starts off with a simple acoustic part, then he starts off singing with "The needle pierced the skin...". I think it could be better with more instruments though. 9/10 My Recommendations: Immigrant Punk-Gogol Bordello (Gypsy Punk) Sink, Florida, Sink-Against Me! This is a good song. It's not as good as their best stuff on Reinventing Axl Rose and Crime but it is a nice, catchy song with the tuneful passionate singing you expect from Against Me! The music is fairly simple with some good, if sometimes overly familiar, riffs populating the song. There's also some hidden intricacies in the music that are fairly generic but pulled off well in this song. My only real criticism would be that its slightly too short but overall it's an enjoyable singalong song. 8/10 Choose from: Stockyard Stoics - Ballad of Maga & Squeaky (Punk) Bob Dylan - It's Alright Ma, I'm Only Bleeding (Folk) The Dwarves - Runaway (Pop) Mojo Nixon - The Ballad of Country Dick (Cow-Punk) American Steel - Insurrection Ave (Punk) Gmail: sketchyjoe |

I've been meaning to check out this band, and here's a good excuse. It begins with an awesome drum solo. Then the vocals come in and I can tell it's already social. Then it goes into a lighter rock, that sounds almost like hard Beach Boys. It's really cool, I like it. It breaks out into these riffs every so often, and the lyrics are pretty awesome. This band came to a nearby venue recently, sucks I didn't check them out before. The song breaks down, and it adds a really cool effect. This band really surprised me, they have really cool lyrics and the music sounds like something out of one of Duane Peters band. It ends with the harder rock guitar, and the singer singing pretty awesome lyrics. All around this song was pretty awesome, I think I'll definitely pick up an album. The song begins with a pretty cool riff before fading fuzzily into a quiet mellow section with a pretty nice bassline and some okay vocals. The song speeds up and the distorted guitar come back in but it all still feels pretty mellow. There's a pretty cool simple mini-solo before the next verse. Then after the build-up it jumps into another section with a chugga-chugga sort of riff which again leads into another mellow section. This song is catchy throughout and every section is well done with the segues between them feeling natural but its just too dreary. It keeps giving the impression that it's building-up befeore it fades back into the quiet verses. Maybe I'm being overly harsh as I did enjoy the song but it felt slightly dispassionate to me. 6.5/10 Choose from: Bob Dylan - It's Alright Ma, I'm Only Bleeding (Folk) The Two Gallants - Fail Hard to Regain (Folk-punk) Bread and Roses - Bedtime for Plutocracy (Folk-punk) American Steel - Insurrection Ave (Punk) The Macc Lads - No Sheep 'Til Buxton (Punk) Apocalypse Hoboken - I'm At Least Eight Things (Punk) The Max Levine Ensemble - Conventional (Pop-Punk) The Dwarves - Runaway No. 2 (Pop) sketchyjoe@gmail.com |
