I love most of Images and Words and Scenes from a memory, havn't listened to any of their other albums in any great detail though.
Three favourite songs are probably Home, Another Day and Beyond This Life. Could change any time though, hehe. |
^^They always can.
Mine are taken from the very limited number of CDs i own. With a wider collection comes different favourites (normally) |
My three favorite songs as of right now are probably "A Change of Seasons" "Pull Me Under" and the whole seconed disc of "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence"

Don't have a favourite song by Dream Theater, too good of a band lol.
|
Doe's anyone here ever find DT vocals irritating? I see numerous people on the forums saying that they can't get into the band because of LaBrie's vocals, but I fail to see a problem with them.
And also, does LaBrie usually write his own lyrics? Because I looked at the ToT album booklet the other day and most lyrics were written by Petrucci or Portnay. |
I've never had a problem with them. Some songs i dont really like the vocals in like The Great Debate. But most songs i really like the vocals and there melodys.

I agree...I thought he was flat in the DVD (Especially in "This Dying Soul"), but he's something that has to grow on you. I hated his voice at first then I realized..."wow, he's hittin' those notes, that's impressive", so now, I think he's a very underrated singer Anyway, my top 10, in no order: 1. The Glass Prison 2. Endless Sacrifice 3. As I Am 4. Learning to Live 5. Under a Glass Moon 6. The Mirror 7. Overture 1928/Strange Deja Vu 8. Lie 9. The Silent Man 10. Surrounded |

Petrucci and Portnoy write all of them, with the exception of Myung on trail of tears and maybe a few other songs. |
yeah, hes pretty average in "in the name of god" too. The dvd made me reconsider if laBrie is as good as i thaught he was (if he cant sing well live......) however on the "metropolis 2000: lives scenes from new york" dvd labrie is note perfect in every song pretty much, it was good to here. |

Well, you do have to factor that he's 42, so, he might not be albe to hit the notes that he once hit...but I doubt that. Also, on Name of God, on the DVD...was anyone really annoyed with Pertucci's harmony on the chorus? Although, it was in sync, it was still really annoying...too high pitched. Anyone agree? BTW...Instrumeledy on the DVD = Orgasm |

BTW...Instrumeledy on the DVD = Orgasm
Petrucci should never sing like that, ever, again. Seriously, I thought it was an overdub of LaBrie or something... No, I watch Budokan, and see Petrucci doing that part :amaze: And LaBrie might not have done much writing on TOT, but he's done more on older albums. Edit: Favorite Songs: The Glass Prison (All time favorite) The Mirror/Lie Caught in a Web Blind Faith As I Am This Dying Soul In the Name of God Pull Me Under Dance of Eternity Trial of Tears |
I think Moore did a lot of the writing on Images & Words.
|
The first time i heard Dream Theater was about 3months ago, in a van outside the uk distributer for Indie Guitars (im a roadie, n my boss person was there for sum reason) and the guitarist put some on, i think it was Metropollis part:1, and i was like hmmm interesting, so then about a month ago i saw 'Images and Words' and 'Awake' for 7 quid each, i snapped em up and wow. I think there ace and can't wait to see them come to the UK, although my friend said he'd mentioned them to me about 18months ago (i can't remember, he probably did)

Strange Deja Vu Voices |
At first I thought the vocals were slightly dated, but they're really not that bad at all. They definately grow on you. Sometimes LeBrie's voice is too high, but that also can grow on you. He's a good singer.
I think a lot of people who complain about his vocals are into other styles of metal with harsher or deeper vocals. |
LaBrie's vocals are definetly an aquired taste. Sometimes he's a little too high, and Geddy Lee-ish.
But other times, he's on target. See, The Glass Prison, The Mirror, Lie, for example.. |
Being like Geddy Lee is a good thing... I think Labrie's vocals are best when they're all high, like pretty much all of Images and Words. On Awake, he mixed it up a bit more, and I really prefer his style on Images and Words. |

Part of the reason I don't listen to Rush as often as, say, Tool or whoever, is because of Geddy's vocal style. I like a singer who can show off a wide variety of ranges and sounds, for the most part, and Geddy doesn't really do that. LaBrie does it a little more, but not on I&W. He does it more on Awake, Six Degrees and ToT, and those are my personal favorites of theirs. |
^ LaBrie is better on Awake than Images & Words.
He is still fantastic on both though. |
