Lunch 10-19-2005 08:04 PM
I don't really think any members of The Who had especially spectacular songwriting in terms of lyrics...I mostly listen to the music when I listen to The Who. They are actually one of the few bands I listen to that I'm like that with.
It takes a pretty gifted songwriter to put together albums like Tommy and Quadrophenia, not to mention the great underrated lyrics on By Numbers, along with his Townshend's other classics like Substitute, Won't Get Fooled Again, My Generation, etc.

jpj 10-19-2005 08:07 PM

Yea, I think Pete Towshend is a great songwriter for the same reasons Lunch mentioned. And whoever said Pinball Wizard made them cringe or whatever, the only reason they put that on the album was because some record company exec was a pinball buff, so they though it would make him let them make Tommy. Originally, the story had nothing to do with pinball.
oh, then you havent even hit all the frank zappa yet.

woodstock, i'll try to up those, but like jong said, ysi is being weird and failing all the time.

i got all the music from people on aim and the ysi threads. and cds that i buy.
   Jesus H. Christ! That is a LOT of Frank Zappa! I don't even know where to start! I'll decide which ones I want later...

np: The new South Park episode parodying Hurricane Katrina

EDIT: And apparently The Day After Tomorrow as well

thickasabrick 10-19-2005 08:08 PM
do you have any of their stuff?
Nay, nay.

Do you have any Zappa already? Generally Hot Rats and Freak Out! are ranked among his best, and the best to start out with. If you want a more guitar oriented album and want to hear just how good Zappa actually was as a guitarist, the Shut Up and Play Yer Guitars are good.

robo2448 10-19-2005 08:09 PM

Townsend is one of my top 5 songwriters along with Dylan, Lennon, McCartney, and Waters. I think he definitely deserves to be in that company, but I'm probably biased too.

Anyone up for a chat?
Anyone up for a chat?
I'm going to bed soon :-/

dr._feelgood 10-19-2005 08:28 PM

So anyway, my favorite band right now would have to be The Who. I just wanted to bring that up because it doesn't seem like they've been mentioned lately. (other than Townshend being a great songwriter)

NP: Squeeze Box

Lunch 10-19-2005 08:29 PM

Yea, it's a shame all the threads on them always die out. I never particularly liked Squeeze Box though.

Illmatic 10-19-2005 08:32 PM

Yikes, how come Bowie never gets placed in the "great songwriters" discussion?
:-\

MBS 10-19-2005 08:33 PM

/:eek:'s at freud's musical collection

How do you get all that?!

I want more Buckley, I've overplayed "Grace" to the point of no return. What do you reccomend?
Yikes, how come Bowie never gets placed in the "great songwriters" discussion? :-\
I don't listen to a lot of Bowie. I've got a couple of his albums, and I've listened to them all at least a few times...but I don't really listen to him regularly.

Illmatic 10-19-2005 08:37 PM

Yeah, well you listen to the Gratef---/gets shot

np: David Bowie - Suffragette City

DeusExMachina 10-19-2005 08:38 PM

I like Bowie. Except on most songs, his voice really bothers me.

magicbus 10-19-2005 08:42 PM

I love Bowie. He's a great songwriter, and I can't get enough of his voice. It's so cool!

NP: John Mayall stuff

dr._feelgood 10-19-2005 08:52 PM

Bowie is awesome. Suffragette City is such a great song.

i network a lot. haha.

i would recommend live at sin-e. its a solo live double cd album and its great. very intimate atmosphere and his voice, as always, is great.

BludgeonySteve 10-19-2005 10:03 PM
I like Bowie. Except on most songs, his voice really bothers me.
I don't see how it would. It sounds fine to me.

Jacaranda 10-19-2005 11:03 PM

Bowie is overrated.

/non conformist!

Leper 10-19-2005 11:12 PM

Bowie's voice kind of bothers me on Under Pressure, but maybe that's because you can't help but compare it to Freddy Mercury's..which is no comparison really. But other than that I like Bowie's voice.

NP: The Rolling Stones- Mother's Little Helper

Never over estimate the power of Bowie

jpj 10-20-2005 05:03 AM

I like Bowie. I have Diamond Dogs, Ziggy Stardust, and Low. I'm not sure if I like Ziggy Stardust or Diamond Dogs more though.
How is "We're Only In It For The Money?"
I still haven't heard it. I've been wanting it for awhile, but everytime I go to Best Buy I pass it up because it's more expensive than everything else. I think it was the Top 40 Psychedelic Albums of All Time though, so it must be good.

EDIT: I checked, it wasn't on the list I was thinking of, I swear I saw it on some list though.

Thats a good question. I love Bowie, Life on Mars is undeniably one of the greatest songs ever written.
