Lunch 10-19-2005 01:44 PM
Lunch said Townsend was the greatest songwritter ever .
I actually had the restraint not to bring him up:p
They do for me, did you unzip them?
Haha, the thought never occured to me!

Boots of Spanish Leather (I'm listening to the Live at Carnegie Hall 1963 version) is such a great song.

He's definitly one of them...

Man, I had Twist and Shout stuck in my head all day today. It drove me nuts.

I don't really think any members of The Who had especially spectacular songwriting in terms of lyrics...I mostly listen to the music when I listen to The Who. They are actually one of the few bands I listen to that I'm like that with.

The Great Decay 10-19-2005 02:04 PM

What is a good Bob Dylan album to grab after The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan?

Broken Arrow 10-19-2005 02:05 PM

Okay this is really late but I think Morrison writes good lyrics but there not as good as Neil Young, Bob Dylan, perhaps even Roger Waters........(maybe, maybe not).

And I also dont think the Grateful Deads lyrics are that great either.

I agree with Arthur Lee though.

EDIT-get Blonde on Blonde

I personally really like Townsends lyrics. Not all his songs are that great (Pinball Wizard is almost cringe worthy) but Won't Get Fooled Again, Substitute, and 5'15 all have great lyrics.

Glitterati 10-19-2005 02:09 PM
Have you heard the Harrison cover?
Not yet. I hear it's good.

Ok...I took a hot bath and a nap, and I feel somewhat better. I'm going to be able to make it to the show, luckily.

magicbus 10-19-2005 02:10 PM

For another Dylan album, I'd say The Times They Are A-Changing (folkish) or Highway 61 Revisited (electric). Depending on what style you like (Freewheelin' is folkish too)

EDIT: I did not know Harrison's "If Not For You" was a cover, that song's sweet! What Dylan album was it originally on?

The Great Decay 10-19-2005 02:14 PM

So far I've only ever listened to Bob Dylan's folk material, but I'm open to the electric as well.

I highly suggest Blood on the Tracks to be your next choice, it has the same beautiful storytelling as his folk albums (of which I also suggest The Times They Are A-Changin'), but it's with a full band...like his less folky albums (of which I suggest Bringin' It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisted, and Blonde on Blonde).

I suppose that should be enough to give you a general idea of some directions you could take.

Does anyone in here think Arthur Lee is extremly underrated? Listin to Forever Changes and tell me he's not a great songwritter. Odd lyrics at times but the music is up there with the best of them.

Broken Arrow 10-19-2005 02:27 PM

Yes!

My favourite would be "The Red Telephone". (lyric-wise)
I've always thought that The Grateful Dead were musically one of the best bands of the Classic Rock era (or ever), but their lyrics have never really stood out as amazing. I'd rate Zeppelins lyrics over the Grateful Deads actually....some people may find that offensive I suppose, but it's just my opinion.

np: Pink Floyd - Let There Be More Light.
On average I don't think there's much special about his lyrics but songs like "Ripple" are extremly beautiful. (the music's fantastic aswell) He has his shining moments but the way Moon is making him up to be is well....insane. :p

"A House Is Not a Motel" is mine with "The Red Telephone" being a close 2nd.

Yeah, I think they made some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard...but they're lyrics aren't really artistic masterpieces, they aren't even very inspiring. (speaking of the Grateful Dead)

Broken Arrow 10-19-2005 02:43 PM

Recently new favourite GD song-Franklin's Tower

It has cool lyrics.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 10-19-2005 02:43 PM
If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung,
Would you hear my voice come thru the music?
Would you hold it near as it were your own?

It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken;
Perhaps they're better left unsung.
I don't know, don't really care.
Let there be songs to fill the air.

Ripple in still water, when there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty,
If your cup is full may it be again.
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of men.

There is a road, no simple highway,
Between the dawn and the dark of night,
And if you go, no one may follow,
That path is for your steps alone.

Ripple in still water, when there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.

You who choose to lead must follow,
But if you fall, you fall alone.
If you should stand, then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home.
These are some fantastic lyrics! These are some of my favorite lyrics to tell you the truth. It's too bad almost none of their songs came a mile within it.

JonG 10-19-2005 02:45 PM

Did anybody listen to Ballad of Easy Rider? :(

Franklin's Tower is one of my favorites off of Blues For Allah.

thickasabrick 10-19-2005 02:47 PM

Yeah Ripple has great lyrics. It's one of my favourite Grateful Dead songs.

I'm listeneing to the John Mayall album right now, it's pretty cool so far. I'm also downloading Little Feat and the Traffic one.

Ahhh I've got the album Wired, by Jeff Beck going right now, and man, it's awesome.

I've got that on vinyl, although I've only listened to it a few times. I'm not a big Jeff Beck fan...I actually prefer Beck to Jeff Beck, not that the two are anything alike.

BigTrav415 10-19-2005 03:19 PM

Well, I just got back from my class trip to a camp in the mountains of Virginia. Easily the most memorable moment was when we we were heading back to the camp after we had gone up on a mountain to chill and rock-hop (there were 4 other guys there that were playing guitar and smoking pot; the chaperones looked really uncomfortable  ) and all the girls started singing some gay Spice Girls song; really, really loud. I mean loud enough to hurt my ears. Obviously there was no way to stop them, so all the guys were trying to ignore it without success. So of course the only thing to do was, of course, sing even louder, and one of the counselors started singing Yellow Submarine, and everyone joined in. Me and him were the only ones who knew the verse, but when we got to the chorus everyone joined in. It was great

magicbus 10-19-2005 03:39 PM

Check out all these sweet concerts I missed because I wasn't born yet :upset: They were all in Michigan.

The Great Decay 10-19-2005 03:49 PM

Could anyone suggest to me some Folk artists in the vein of Bob Dylan and Simon & Garfunkel?

The Great Decay 10-19-2005 03:57 PM

I already listen to, and thoroughly enjoy, both Iron & Wine and Nick Drake. But there are a number of bands/artists theres I have to check out. Thanks.

TheDMV 10-19-2005 04:30 PM

Nick Drake is one of my favorite bed time listens. He's a underrated guitarist as well; intricate finger pickings, strange tunings, mastery of the capo, and unique compisitions all add up to one hell of a guitar player.

I remember saying something like that, everybody got mad. :(

magicbus 10-19-2005 04:48 PM

I'm not mad, I used to be in the same situation. I only suggest you give him another shot at some point in time.

In other new, John Mayall's The Turning Point is an awesome album. Like, I just listened to it all the way through, and I was really diggin the whole thing. This is one of my cd's to buy now.
