Hold on, I'm trying to think of someone I can say is better without getting laughed at, just for the sake of arguement.
Um, Neil Young maybe?
Robert Hunter? |
Jesus fusty walrus!ing Christ, Desolation Row is amazing.
Who in this thread does not agree to this statement: "Bob Dylan is the greatest songwriter of the 20th century." I'm just curious.
I highly agree. He could write some incredible lyrics but he wasn't all that great with writting actual music. Not that his actual music was bad it's just he didn't really go many places musicaly. I think Jim Morrison could arguably hold a stick to him but it's a really different type a style I don' like to compare. John Lennon could write great music and great lyrics. He's probablly my favorite songwritter to actualy listin to. As for Neil Young....he could write some great lyrics and great music but he's no where near the quality people such as John, Jim or Bob. Of course you could be more exotic and make an argument for Syd Barrett, Frank Zappa and maybe Arther Lee but meh....I'll leave it at that. If were including Jazz in all this it's a whole new ball game.
I would start elaborating on how much I love his lyrics, but I think everyone's probably bored of my ranting about them by now.
Although I love your rants I don't think we need one. Most (if not all) regulars in here think he's the best....but please do rant. :)
Robert Hunter?
John Dawson+Jerry Garcia+Robert Hunter=One deadly combo He writes some great lyrics but really.....no where near Morrison or Lennon. He is underrated and never talked about though. |
John Mayall - Turning Point sent out.
John Mayall - Turning Point sent out.
Sweet. My dad says that was his favorite album when it came out a while ago. He only has it on record though, and our record player doesn't work so I've never heard it. |
Does anybody else want anything from my list?
I think he made much more of an impact musically, socially, and politically on Freewheelin' and The Times They Are A-Changin' than on any of his other albums put together. The only reason his "going electric" seemed to be so revolutionary was because he was known as a topical songwriter, and suddenly he wasn't singing topical songs anymore....he was singing songs that seemed to be more for entertainment.
Mind you, these "entertainment" songs were generally more popular, but a lot of people noticed that they no seemed to longer hold the substance, the inspiration, the voice, and the message that everyone knew and loved Bob Dylan for (this seemed to be the folk fans opinions more than the general American public). His going electric definitely made an impact, just like everything he did, but I can assure you songs like Highway 61 Revisted weren't as revolutionary as songs like Blowin' In The Wind. I don't even know where I was going with this. I just like to ramble about Bob Dylan. (but you can't say Ballad of a Thin Man had more of an impact/influenced American culture in the 60's more than say....The Times They Are A-Changin')
I laud him for doing the "entertainment" songs, personally...he didn't want to be a voice or a visionary, he considered himself a "song and dance man" (his own words)...so when he released himself from the weight of the expectations placed on him, that was a pretty monumentous thing, I think. NP: Bob Dylan - One Of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later)
I think Jim Morrison could arguably hold a stick to him but it's a really different type a style I don' like to compare.
"Come ride the snake, to the lake, the snake is long" Also, didn't Manzarek and Krieger write most of the actual music? |
I'm listening to Freak Out (Hungry Freaks, Daddy, specifically) and sometimes I wonder where in the hell did Frank Zappa come up with this stuff?
The lead singer of U2 thinks he is the best singer ever. I can't stand him. The Maddox article on them is incredibly funny and I love it.

I'm just curious. edit - Haha, I forgot about the swear filter....who thought of fusty walrus?
What about Lennon? McCartney? Bob Dylan had good words, but the music itself is way too...desolate. I think McCartney or Lennon did better, because even if you do take away the great words, and just had..say a violin play the vocal part, the song would still be enjoyable. |

Well if that's the case, you can't leave David Bowie out. Next time you get the opportunity, play one of his vocal lines on piano...it sounds great. |
Man, Phish is one of the funniest bands. I just listened to their cover of Hanson's MMMBOP and I seriously fell out of my chair laughing.
You should listen to the Who's version of the Beach Boy's 'Barbara Ann', insane. |

Well, a good all-a-round songwriter can put out great words and great instrument parts. Leonard Bernstein (Boston Pops, West Side Story), credited the Beatles for creating some of the greatest songs of the 20th Century, and it's not everyday an amazing composer credits a Musically illiterate pop/rock group. They perfected the,"AABA", songform, and overall made great music. I think Dylan, however, would have been just as successful as a poet, because he was the best lyricist of the 20th century. |
John Dawson+Jerry Garcia+Robert Hunter=One deadly combo
He writes some great lyrics but really.....no where near Morrison or Lennon. He is underrated and never talked about though
Morrison, what the hell? I strongly believe he's a much better writer than Jim Morrison, and John Lennon, possibly even comparable to Bob Dylan. Also: Hunter > Hunter, Garcia, Dawson> all |
Please....that be like if Lunch said Townsend was the greatest songwritter ever or if I said Syd Barrett was the best. Truth is we're all to much of fanboys to really be believable. Hunter the best? Give us a break! He did have some incredibly great lyrics at times but I mean really. On average he couldn't touch Morrison with a 50 foot pole.
If you think he's better than Lennon or Morrison I'm convenced you're possibly insane. |
Jim Morrison really was not all that special, Schyma.
|
Jim Morrison really was not all that special, Schyma.
WTF?....That shows your ignorance. Just listin to some of these songs and tell me he's not anything special.

I'm sorry, he doesn't strike me as being all that good or all that bad. He's just average to me.
|
He's good at what he did, but he wasn't amazing. I respect him, but not on the same level as Dylan or Lennon.
That shows your ignorance.
We're all ignorant compared to Schyma.
Please....that be like if Lunch said Townsend was the greatest songwritter ever or if I said Syd Barrett was the best. For I am a fan of the Grateful Dead. Unfortunatley, being a major fan of them marks me as a fanboy; all my opinion are disreguarded, because I am partial to their musicians and music. No matter how well thought out or justifiable my opinions may be, no dice, I have too much liking to have any credibility. But, perhaps one reason I like them is because of their writer and his writing; not Jerry Garcia, not Phil Lesh, just Robert Hunter. But it's all just fanboy nonsense anyway. /goin to bed |
Have you ever sat though and actualy listined to the lyrics? Just because you don't like the Doors really doesn't mean you shouldn't give Morrison a shot.
Moonlight Drive --------------------- Let's swim to the moon Uh huh Let's climb thru the tide Penetrate the evenin' that the city sleeps to hide Let's swim out tonight, love It's our turn to try Parked beside the ocean On our moonlight drive Let's swim to the moon Uh huh Let's climb thru the tide Surrender to the waiting worlds that lap against our side Nothin' left open And no time to decide We've stepped into a river On our moonlight drive Let's swim to the moon Let's climb thru the tide You reach a hand to hold me But I can't be your guide Easy to love you as I watch you glide Falling through wet forests On our moonlight drive Moonlight drive C'mon, baby, gonna take a little ride Down, down by the ocean side Gonna get real close Get real tight Baby gonna drown tonight Goin' down, down, down
He's good at what he did, but he wasn't amazing. I respect him, but not on the same level as Dylan or Lennon.
His lyrics tops some of Lennon's best works. |
I've inspected his lyrics, read his biographies, listened to his music. I still think he's okay.
We're all ignorant compared to Schyma.
Saying Morrison isn't "all that special" is disrespectful! Saying he compares to Dylan is just.....incredible. When I start trying giving a case for Syd you just roll your eyes. |
When I start trying giving a case for Syd you just roll your eyes.
Well, I don't like Syd Barrett, but I wouldn't (or shouldn't have) write your opinion off as fanboyism.
Saying he compares to Dylan is just.....incredible
I definitely wouldn't say so.
Saying Morrison isn't "all that special" is disrespectful!
I see why I should respect him. |
Well, I don't like Syd Barrett, but I wouldn't (or shouldn't have) write your opinion off as fanboyism.
I always thought you did. (with everyone here too)
I definitely would say so.
Well Moon I hold your opinions highly but.....that's just insanity. :p I respect Hunter but damn! Better than Lennon and Morrison? That's just crazy. Oh well god speed you crazy cat I gotta go t' bed. |
So does Miles Davis count as a songwriter? Or is he a "composer"?
