Stress (joint best hip-hop album with 'Illmatic' if you ask me, closely followed by 'OK', 'Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde' and 'The Low End Theory') > OK > Desire > Internal Affairs

Tyler 12-03-2008 04:34 PM

I don't like Illmatic that much to be honest. I mean I like it, but it's a 3.5 at best for me.
'Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde'
You know, shamefully, I still haven't heard this album.

pixiesfanyo 12-03-2008 04:36 PM

i'm sure you've heard singles. DILLARIFFIC

It's really great. I didn't like it much at first, it's very upbeat, but it grew on me a lot. The lyrics are hilarious, the rapping's great & it has a cool 90's jazzy vibe to it.

It's the first rap album I ever really liked.
What the hell differentiates a "good" beat maker from a "progressive" one?
what differentiates a "good" rock group from a "progressive" one... or any genre for that matter. pushing the envelope my friend...

progressive producers: madlib, black milk, el-p, dilla

awesome producers: jake one, statik selektah, premier, list goes on

there's no question that what the 4 above mentioned progressive minded guys have done in the past few years has definitely shaped the face of hiphop, catapulting it into its next phase. i really don't know what to say if you can't see that. that isn't to say that i dont love jake one, or any number of guys, they're just not progressive minded.

pixiesfanyo 12-03-2008 05:31 PM

i'd say premo was progressive once and he was so much that he can just sit and make the same beat forever because he is that good.

kingsoby1 12-03-2008 06:05 PM

yeah definitely... he really did a lot for the genre. it's not like he sucks now; he's still super awesome, but he's not really evolving his style.

Just put up a review of the Blue Sky Black Death-produced album Gutta - "Heads Will Roll"

anyone else make beats around here

Interstate 12-07-2008 12:14 PM

I enjoyed the new Kanye West album even though it's completely different in style to his others. Kept reading bad reviews of it but it didn't put me off.

ATM 12-07-2008 07:10 PM

Anyone like Lords of the Underground?

JonG 12-07-2008 07:35 PM

Here Come the Lords is a classic.

i cant really get into it at all, i mean love lockdown is a pretty good song but the rest of it just didnt click with me.
then again it took me a very long time to enjoy most of his stuff so it may grow on me, although i do much prefer him to rap rather than sing

AA-12 12-07-2008 11:57 PM

new Kanye is one of my favorite releases of 08. i love autotune though.

ive been listening to eminem a lot lately. i didnt realize how awesome The Eminem Show was. Superman is such a killer track.

StreetlightRock 12-08-2008 05:34 AM

Ugh, autotune (as an obvious effect) is becoming so overused now just to give songs some electro edge, it's sorta really annoying.

badtaste 12-08-2008 06:01 AM

'tis the Cher effect.

Listened to RZA's 'Bobby Digital in Stereo' recently. Pretty cool. I'm a sucker for his casual rap style.

yeah, i get why people hate it but i really dig it 99% of the time.

kingsoby1 12-08-2008 08:40 AM

rza needs to stop the bobby digital garb and produce gza albums. too bad they're all like in their 40's now.

cher is so annoying. i went to a gay bar the other day with some friends that wanted to go to a bar of their choosing for once... and it was basically the worst musical experience of my life.

It's Jake.

I've been listening to the Reavers lately. They were really good.

hiphopdx gave the new common a 2.5 lolololol

Iai 12-10-2008 03:44 AM

It's getting slaughtered on RYM, but the resident hip-hop expert gave it a really tentative 3.5 and was like, 'I'm really not looking forward to defending this rating to everyone'.
