Great analysis Med, I thought it was really well thought out and well presented.

TheDMV 05-24-2005 05:41 PM

Med for President!

That was an excellent reveiw. I had never thought about the lyrics that way, partially because I could never understand all of them :p That song is one of the songs my dad recommended to me and that got me into Floyd. Great Work :thumb:

lunch998 05-24-2005 07:25 PM

That was deep, nice job Med. No less than what I'd expect from you.

moaner 05-25-2005 09:23 AM

moaner 05-25-2005 04:43 PM
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it’s sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in the relative way, but you’re older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
to me, this means "if you try to stop time catching up on you, you're wasting it even more trying".

lunch998 05-25-2005 07:47 PM

Come on people, we need your analysis.

BigTrav415 05-25-2005 08:48 PM

This is a very great link here. If you're not familer with the Syd Barrett story I suggest you read it.

Whoever owes them. I know you're busy at uni so I wasn't trying to give you a hard time, but people are anxious to get going on WYWH.

Brain Damage
The lunatic is on the grass
The lunatic is on the grass
remembering games and daisy chains and laughs
got to keep the loonies on the path
This line basically refers to the fact that the man, who is the focus of Dark Side Of The Moon, is remembering his childhood, and is possibly slipping into senility, or another kind of infantilism.
The lunatic is in the hall
the lunatics are in the hall
the paper holds their folded faces to the floor
and every day the paper boy brings more
This one is more of a stab at the politicians. The lunatic is in the hall, the lunatics are in the hall refers to the Prime Minister, and his parliament. The newspaper prints their faces with sometimes deriding or critical headlines, hence lowering their self opinion. The paper boy bringing more could refer to the fact that the lunacy never ends, or that the public gets tired of the self-importance of these elected officials.
And if the dam breaks open many years too soon
and if there is no room upon the hill
and if your head explodes with dark forebodings too
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon
Basically, this stanza, and the very last one, both have the same message. If you realise the state of the world, and see the terrible situation that we are all in, then you can leave it to go to the Dark Side of the Moon, i.e. death. The dam is basically the all the terrible things in the world, and when you realise they are there, if you don’t have a loved one to lean on, i.e. drag you from depression, you will probably have morbid thoughts.
The lunatic is in my head
The lunatic is in my head
You raise the blade, you make the change.
You rearrange me till I'm sane.
You lock the door,
And throw away the key.
There's someone in my head but it's not me…
This line is perhaps one of the pivotal lines of DSotM. This basically refers to the fact that the subject of the album, our protagonist, is not actually insane. Or, in other words, he doesn’t believe he is sane, he believes that another influence (the outside world) is making him act strangely. The outside world, however, doesn’t care, so they simply cut and mould the person into a more “sane” human being.
And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear
you shout and no one seems to hear
and if the band you're in starts playing different tunes
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon.
Again, the realisation that society isn’t a pretty place drives you to the edge. If you have no one to talk to, and your expectations of the world don’t match reality, you might as well escape.

If anyone knows what the spoken part is, I will gladly review that. This is my personal opinion, so feel free to discuss any deviations from what the song is meant to mean...

Eclipse to come. :)

Distant Echoes 05-26-2005 06:32 PM

Very nice job Riva :thumb:

One of the few floyd songs i can actually sing, so I am fimiliar with the lyrics very well. This song and eclipse sum up the entire album very well.

Riva 05-26-2005 06:33 PM

So far we have:

Shine On You Crazy Diamond (I-V) - Slowhand, Moaner
Welcome To The Machine - Bennyl
Have A Cigar - Robo2248
Wish You Were Here - HeavyRiva/Malcolm Young Rock
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (VI-IX) - Slowhand

That leaves a spot on WTTM, HAC and SOYCD 6-9.

moaner 05-27-2005 07:45 AM

i take shine on 1-5.

robo2448 05-27-2005 10:05 AM
Dibs your WYWH song now. Two people per song. I pick Wish You Were Here.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond (I-V)
Welcome To The Machine
Have A Cigar
Wish You Were Here - HeavyRiva
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (VI-IX)
I'll do Have A Cigar.

moaner 05-27-2005 12:27 PM

med got something wrong in his "featured artist" thing.

the voice in the great gig in the sky does NOT say "If you can hear this whispering you're dieing". It actually says "I never said I was frightened of dieing", in response to the card "why are you frightened of dieing?", the same question asked to the guy who said "There's no need for it, you've got to go sometime."

moaner 05-27-2005 12:27 PM

does anyone know what the song "any colour you like" was about? creativity?

i know all the rest.

lunch998 05-27-2005 01:17 PM

We already have the first set of dibs for WYWH...
SOYCD(All parts until further notice): Slowhand, Moaner(1-5)
Welcome to the Machine: Bennyl
Have a Cigar: MYR, Robo2448
WYWH: Riva
And now it's updated.

Dragon_Prince 05-27-2005 01:18 PM

wrong ...

At 3:32 you can hear a soft voice, that sais ''If you hear this whisper you are diieing'' the ''I never said I was frightenend of dieing'' is at the end of the song :)

lunch998 05-27-2005 01:30 PM

No, she says "I never said I was afraid of dying" at 3:33. We've had this discussion many times before.

bennyl 05-27-2005 02:17 PM
What does it contribute to the album as a whole? To me, it's the bleak centrepiece of it, disguised as something far happier. You've got Time and Money, which deal with the nature of human experience, but Us & Them goes beyond that, dealing with the collective experience, and how we fail to help each other, as well as helping ourselves. The way I see the overall theme of Dark Side is one of human failure, at both an individual and group level, and Us & Them, to me, is the most graphic indicator of that. It's also the last song of the middle part of the album (from Time to Us & Them), leading into the album's climax, where everything's explained. I would talk about that, but Jason's doing it I think...is that what you meant?
thats what I wanted

EDIT: for WYWH I alrealdy called Welcome to the machine

lunch998 05-27-2005 03:15 PM

I know, see my post a little bit above this one. I have you down for Welcome to the Machine.

Thor 05-27-2005 03:30 PM

Horray Welcome to the Machine! My 2nd favorite Pink Floyd song!

Scooch 05-27-2005 03:33 PM

Does anyone have the lyrics to Careful with that Axe Eugene, the Live in Pompeii version?

AIIIUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHUUUUUUUGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH <roger implodes>

MalcolmYoungRock 05-27-2005 05:06 PM

Change that, I'll collaborate with Riva on WYWH.

Have a Cigar's open.

slowhand 05-27-2005 05:19 PM

So that means we can start the WYWH album? I'm halfway through with mine (in a notebook), but if we can put them up, I'll finish it now and post it up. The only reason why I haven't finish it it's because I wasn't in a hurry.

And I was thinking, you can really put the entire WYWH album as a story of Syd. It's like the concept album is Barrett's rise and explotation in the limelight.

Or maybe I'm just crazy.
