Nothing happens if you're confident with yourself. You say you don't care and people think less of you, sure, but at least you can think higher of yourself not hiding behind a PC facade.
I suppose, but political correctness, while taken to stupid extremes very often, is still a healthy thing to try practicing. The goal of every person that doesn't care about something that offends human decency should be to start caring about it: that's my goal, at least. Right now I'm working on my tendency to racially stereotype and to not care about racial problems or pretend unconsciously that they don't exist. I do it: I still know that it's wrong and that I shouldn't. Political correctness is for me a way to try and care about something that I don't care about. It hinders progress to say "**** it" to everything that you WOULD say "**** it" to: a better way is to work on understanding and innately knowing the problem so you can actually start caring enough to do something.

Cain 03-20-2005 11:58 PM

Another note on political correctness: it IS a useful tool for both self-preservation and for avoiding offending somebody, after all. And there IS a way to admit your political incorrectness in a more sensitive way than saying "I don't care" flat-out, and that is the way change can be falicitated: admitting your faults in a sensitive way so that people don;t just outright attack you, but instead they help you to work through that fault.

I usually am the kind of person who believes and speaks on the contrary without caring, but with issues like the tsunami and sweatshops and such, I just decide to keep my mouth shut when I probably shouldn't.

See, I actually don't care less about human problems though. I have given up on the human race and so all the things you suggest I care about are, to me, pointless. If I wanted to fix something it would involve mass extermination of the race.

I care less what people think about my opinions than I do what they think of me, which is already admittedly near not caring at all. I refuse to soften my views to appease people uncomfortable with the thought I encourage them to follow when they hear me speak.

You shouldn't. If people aren't comfortable with you for who you are, you're better than them.

Forgive me for saying so (please don't take this the wrong way), but that's pathetically apathetic and also, in my opinion, rather false. We all say that we'll give up on the human race, but even within that absence of hope lies another hope: we all will hope to get to a point where we won't give up on the human race. We all hope to regain our hope, whether you like it or not. If you were truly without hope for the decency of the human race, you would have no reason to live. The fact that you still are alive shows that you have this hope or that you're struggling with the idea that you'll regain it.

I have a hard time believing that you started this whole thing just to prove that we all suck. To me, you're trying to get us to admit that we don't care so that we can actually work towards caring, since after all, you'll never succeed in waking up a person that is pretending to be asleep.

Not at all. I live because I believe more firmly that suicide is a cheap way out than I do that humans are worthless. If I could see suicide as an intelligent solution I would take it. Though I have been tempted to take it regardless of how stupid it might be.

Meh, I'm a realist, whatever I say to inspire change won't cause it, but at least I'm saying it. If everyone realizes they suck they might try to change it, or they might commit suicide, but I'm fine with either choice.

Would it matter if I was?

/more discussion of racial stereotypes soon to follow!

One time I was working backstage for Fiddler on the Roof, which is all about Jews (in case you didn't know), and one of the little kids took one look at me and said "You're Jewish, you could be in the play!" I'm Catholic, but he thought I was Jewish because of my nose. I thought my girlfriend was insane when she thought my nose looked cute as a result of this incident. ("It looks Roman," was her compliment, I believe).

Is madey still her? Or did she quit with all the heaviness the past few pages have accumulated.
