That's way too big!
It's okay, though, I'll shrink it, sexypants.

Am I really that verbose? :(

I just like telling stories, I swear.
Thanks!

You didn't answer my question, though. What's your major?
It's called Group Social Studies, and we can pick four points of emphasis: political science, history, economics, or geography. I opted for history, because a) I don't understand politics in the slightest and am admittedly pretty ambivalent about what's going on nationally and worldwide, b) supply and demand, how fun is that to teach? If the cost of toilet paper increases to $120/roll, the supply will increase, the demand will fall, and the probability that people will be using their hands to wipe their asses or find a substitute good such as Kleenex will increase, and c) geography is cool, but the program here involves using GIS and GPS, and that shit doesn't fly with me.

So, Group Social Studies, History emphasis, and I'm double minoring (which is way more sweet than double majoring): psychology and history.

Because of No Child Left Behind (let me backtrack: I don't follow politics at all unless it has to do with education, haha), I have to become certified to teach both my major and minor. So, realistically, I'm more marketable because I will be certified to teach history, geography, economics, political science, and psychology, but because of NCLB, the odds of me teaching what I want to teach (psych) is extremely low.

So, I might consider going back to school if I get shafted with teaching to become a psychologist, get my doctorate, and then teach psychology courses at a university. Alternatively, I've considered getting my Master's in counseling and being a school counselor, helping students with scheduling and all that other good stuff. But, that's so far down the line right now (at least two years), I just have to get by this semester without dying, haha.
Yes, but not in a bad way.
:o.

Dr. Jake Destructo 09-16-2007 12:14 PM

I'm thinking about teaching as well. Right now I'm an anthro major planning on minoring in Scandinavian Studies and since this is virtually useless, I plan on going to grad school to get my MA and teach or something

Isn't ATM an anthropology major as well? You could always shoot him a message on Stalkbook if you get stuck.

Hahaha. The thing I want to do is teach psychology, so if it means doing stupid psychology stuff like becoming a psychologist in order to get a job professing psychology at a university, then so be it. I wouldn't be happy about it, but then again, this is all assuming I get screwed with a bad teaching job.

I'll have to see how the winter goes, though, when I start my TAing.

Everyone who teaches psych has to be a psychologist?

Jom 09-16-2007 12:35 PM
Everyone who teaches psych has to be a psychologist?
Yes, sir... at least, at the uni level. I doubt any university will look at your resume or application for professing there if you don't have a doctorate. If I was able to get a job teaching psych in a high school, then awesome, because all I have to do is pass the certification exams in psych. But, if that doesn't pan out (and, realistically, it may not), and I still want to do that, then I have to go the doctorate route.

jrowa001 09-16-2007 12:39 PM

im going to be teaching high school math, but it sucks because i have to take all these crazy *** math classes that i will never have to teach once i get a position. the only reason im going for my masters in math is for a higher salary. plus if i coach basketball and volleyball then ill be making good money since my district is one of the highest paying districts in southern california. anybody else doing math as a major?

Well but I thought Psychologists had to get a different degree than a PhD, sine they're "doctors"...

Moses 09-16-2007 12:41 PM

Fuck that. I'd rather take it up the butt 1 or 9 times than pursue math.

Shattered_Future 09-16-2007 12:58 PM

Music production ftw.

If any of you need a record produced and recorded, you should come to my cardboard box in a few years. It's gonna be moving around the city depending on where I can get free food.

Man, I am gonna be SOOO poor.

Dr. Jake Destructo 09-16-2007 01:14 PM

If you're passionate, you'll probably succeed. Even if you fail, that's what parents are for.

No need to be so pessimist. I bet your dad was thinking the same way when he decided to become a professional jazz musician. Or not?
