I've been trying to tell him that for some time. :p
Decent tune, never saw the magic in it that everyone else does though. The Moor and Face Of Melinda happen to be some of my favorites, though.
I never got into Bleak either until I heard it during a tornado...holy **** it's so much better! I'll never forget that day :amaze: It's now one of my top 5 favorite songs ever.
Yeah, The Moor is tight. They didn't play that song at the concert either, which sucked. The song I really really would of loved to see them play live, was Black Rose Immortal. I got like 15 people to chant it towards the end of the concert, they still didn't play itthough

I'd kill to see "The Moor" "Blackwater Park" and "Face of Melinda" live.

No really, I'd just starting killing people if thats what got me a ticket. :D

It seems like BWP is a staple this tour, so that's a good thing for me.

hahahah you sound like my friend who I went with. He doesn't like Opeth that much, but he went berzerk in the pit. No one could touch him, and he doesn't even weigh over 150 lbs. He was throwing people and kicking spitting you name it...then he had the circle. After the concert, he asked what song he snapped to. It was Blackwater Park.

I'm listening to BWP (the song) right now .

I'm going to try and avoid the pit during the concert, I only weigh 130 pounds.

 I usually love moshing, but I didn't once during the concert. I was so fixated on them. The same thought kept streaming through my mind ''I can't believe I'm watching Opeth''

I experienced the same feeling when I saw them... When they played Demon Of The Fall though.. well lets just say, I had to take my glasses off for that one! Mad head banging! :D

Toaster 10-14-2005 09:13 PM

Why does everyone love "Bleak" so much?? It's a great song and all, but there are waay better Opeth songs.

They never play it live, to my knowledge. There's too much overdubbing with the guitars.

That song gives me gooseflesh every listen :D It's the build-up that gets me every time, right at 6:40. Plus the guitars are so eerie. The song as a whole is so powerful. Listen to it during a tornado, you'll love it even more. ;)

The growled parts of the song are rockin, but the rest is weak, IMO.

No doubt! Why do people dislike Bleak? The song is really mesmerizing.

Det_Nosnip 10-14-2005 09:23 PM
The drummer they're playing with is a titan, and clearly he's doing a masterful job dealing with Martin's complex sh*t......but boy I would have loved to see the real thing. This new guy pounds, where Lopez plays with much more subtlety.

Have seen much about Martin being sick, but one interview Mikael said he was depressed. What is the real deal here?
Argh....that's what I was afraid of. Unfortunately, Lopez was a member of a very special elite of heavy metal drummers who actually know the meaning of the words "dynamics" and "groove." Hopefully they'll shy away from the Dam nation material when I see them in a few weeks, as I'd hate to hear those parts butchered.

The 'real deal' is that Martin has some sort of blood disease that he's had for quite a long time, which is acting up or something. He's expected to be out for the rest of the year (I hope that means until January..?), unfortunately.

*shrug* got me. I'd ask how anyone could dislike "Baying of the Hounds" or "Harlequin Forest," but I seem to be alone here in thinking that GR is an amazing album. :(

Darkness 10-14-2005 09:26 PM

Gene is still a really sweet drummer, he nails Martins parts with little difficulty. Maybe he couldn't compose them, but he sure can play them. He won't butcher Damnation, don't worry. He played To Rid the Deisease fine when I saw them.

 Did you just make fun of Gene Hoglan? He is the man. I met him actually, after a Strapping Young Lad concert. He's mountainous.

If you've seen the video for "Ghost of Perdition" you'll know what I'm talking about.

Post your favorite Opeth lines.

ah screw it, it'll take to long. Mikeal is a great lyricist.

I think the album as a whole is too "light". It doesn't really show the whole of what Opeth can accomplish emotionally. Harlequin Forest is the weakest song IMO. Akerfeldt even said he stole the whole opening sequence off an obscure Swedish song (which I have been totally unable to find).

Yeah...well I just hope their next album is an improvement upon this one...

Darkness 10-14-2005 09:38 PM

Hm.. whats gotten into Mikeal? He's always stressed being really unique, always trying to sound different, never ripping anything off... but now its like... really different then that. I bet if the old Mikeal heard us talk about how they use similar rhythms often and that kind of stuff, he'd flip out.

Hey now. I love The Baying Of The hounds, and Reverie/harlequin Forest. It's the album as a whole. I like 3 songs off that album. That's it. I think I let off the wrong impression on my feelings about Ghost Reveries.

A rumor maybe?

Plus most musicians get ideas from other songs all the time, so you can't really blame him if he did it, really.

Yeah, that's true. But to sound unique, you have to take what you've learned, and harness that with your own creativeness.

Darkness 10-14-2005 09:40 PM

Then explain the use of similar rhythms and song formulas on the past few records.

Well I don't know. All bands sometimes have songs that seem similar to past ones.

The past few have probably been my favorite, but some of the songs on D-nation have quite the similar formula, as an example.

Yes. That's true. But, Opeth doesn't sound like anyone. There's a solo on GR that sounds like I've heard it before, other then that, It's all original to me.

Toaster 10-14-2005 09:43 PM

One would hope a band like Opeth would keep reinventing itself. A band gets boring once it starts to stagnate. They are a very different band than they were when they released Orchid.. not so much change from Still Life to Ghost Reveries.

Thank you! The amount of undeserved love that album gets really irks me.
