well what exactly do you do?
This summer I was designing an embedded real-time test system for a rocket flight, and it was awesome. Currently I'm getting paid to watch Buffy all day...probably will change when my advisers get back in a month though.

TimJim 08-25-2009 10:40 PM

the man> the government

even though we all know theyre both the man

the difference is the weapons each use

adb 08-25-2009 10:41 PM

rockets r cool and they explode and its makes a big explosion

you realize thats about the exact thing ill be doing right? haha. im joining air force, not marines bro. and i mean, in all honesty i could just leave after 6 years and get a job with a company like yours making your kind of pay check, probably more. no free housing and **** tho.

im highly considering making a career out of it tho. ive been talking to them about becoming a combat controller, which just sounds ridiculously awesome. itd be cool to be a badass for a living.

AA-12 08-25-2009 10:42 PM

people are not expendable, government is

RouteOne 08-25-2009 10:44 PM

yes because youre going to be able to combat control everyday and i dont mean in just drills.

how exciting it'll be like playing C&C with real people instead of cgi ones. except when they die they will have real families to mourn them.

sounds like my kind of job, sending people to die.

Nepenthe 08-25-2009 10:45 PM

ia ia cthulhu ftaghn

timjim: i think you should look up what a combat controller does bro. youre kinda talking out your *** right now.

and timjim:
The mission of a Combat Controller is to deploy undetected into combat and hostile environments to conduct special reconnaissance, establish assault zones or airfields, while simultaneously conducting air traffic control, fire support, command, control, and communications and forward air control They deploy with air and ground forces in support of direct action, such as drug cartel,counter-terrorism, foreign internal defense, humanitarian assistance, and combat search and rescue. Combat Controllers employ all-terrain vehicles, amphibious vehicles, weapons and demolitions in pursuit of their objectives, which may include obstacle destruction.
yeah because the paragraphs on the website designed to recruit people provide an accurate reflection of what you'll do

TimJim 08-25-2009 10:52 PM

well as long as youre cool with it then why should i care.

even though PEOPLE WILL STILL DIE

like recruitment ads will tell the full truth

thats wikipedia actually

i dont see what youre trying to say tho. i mean, thats what they do. its not like they used big flashy words or anything, or said youre gonna go medal of honor and take on entire armies by yourself. basically, you go in with the first ground force into a location, you set up an area for flight vehicles to land, and you conduct air traffic control in that area.

TimJim 08-25-2009 10:55 PM

the USAF probably did that page themselves and told wiki not to **** it up OR ELSE

yeah thats a classic. i just finished reading shadow over innsmouth for the first time today. not all that impressed. i love his older works, like the arthur jermyn story and rats in the walls. his whole 'if you knew the secrets of your ancestors you would want to kill yourself' thing is really intriguing.

i picked this up at borders the other week

see that's accurate

you spent the last page comparing what you'll be doing to graduate level engineering research, telling us what a badass job it'll be and making it sound like you'll have jets available to attack anything you want at your mere command

but you get to conduct air traffic

I mean, glad your joining and glad you're serving the country, but no point trying to trump it up

AA-12 08-25-2009 11:01 PM

when did i even hint at having jets at my command? i didnt even describe what id be doing until timjim posted his grossly false description of me 'controlling combat' or something.

i said it would be badass. which it will be. going in with the first ground force in a mission area is definitely more badass than anything youll probably ever do in your life. not trying to be rude or anything.

and yeah, the air force is home to some of the greatest engineers. where do you think 90% of the work he does gets done? in the air force. you know, all that top secret space systems ****. but im sure thats not graduate level engineering is it?
