Crash wise I would say go for a nice heavy(not too heavy) crash and I would also advise seeing what you fave drummers from that sort of genre use and then go and test out some of the crashes you like the look and sound of.
Well, seeing as my 'idol' is Portnoy, it would be smart to check out his cymbals, however he plays Sabian and I'm really turning into a Zildjian fanboy despite not owning any of their cymbals. :p
Yo so like, I was thinking about getting those 13" New Beats, but then I just compared the new beats with mastersounds (A, not A Custom) and I much preferred the mastersounds. Is this strange? :p I think most people on here tend to take new beats over others from what I've seen, but yeah..

Btw, the price on the new beats, I added on about 30 or 40 for postage - they're on ebay for $240USD but yeah, I have to get them shipped to Australia.

Also, are mastersounds and/or new beats good for my style of music? I play mostly Dream Theater, so very proggy, yet can be quite heavy at times.

And keeping that style of music in mind (progressive rock/metal), what would be good crashes and rides to get? All I have atm is Paiste 502's cause I'm a stingy bastard, but I really want to upgrade to high end cymbals now.
First I would read the generally uninformative marketing hype from the website, then go to a drum shop and try hitting some to see how they sound, and the guys working in any good shop should know lots and be able to give you some decent advice.
Alright this is my first time trying out the Cymbal Finder, so here goes...

My drums are going to be custom maple or mohogany or walnut (if I can afford it) and they're going to have Fiberskyns all around

I want reaaaaally dry sounding cymbals... 20" ride, 19" china, 18" crash, 13" hats, 10" splash, and maybe a 6" splash...

Price isn't much of a problem (to a certain extent).

UNLATHED IS KEY!
Alright I checked out the K Custom Dry ride, and fell in love.

I'm looking at the 21" ride, and 13" hats. Do they not make a K Custom Dry crash? I didn't see one on Zildjian's website.

Also, what's the difference between K's and K Customs???

Thanks guys!

Aaron 11-16-2006 06:15 AM

K Custom Special Drys are discontinued as of March 2006, but they're still around. They're godly cymbals.

MatthewMeredith 11-16-2006 11:37 AM

 Faaaaaaak I want them so bad! Does Zildjian have any unlathed cymbals still in production then?

Is that just those ones, or all or more K Customs?

HeLLmO 11-16-2006 02:38 PM

just the special dry rides or the special dry hats too? i loved those hats. **** zildjian, i may have to take the 20 minute drive out to Norwood and rain some hell on them

In that case see what he use's and then find somthing similar in the zildjian lines
Yes it is.
why?? Its personal choice

Aaron 11-16-2006 05:37 PM

From what I heard it's the crashes only.

Cocaberry 11-16-2006 05:42 PM

Which has the most wash: AAX Dry Ride, AA Medium Heavy Ride, or AA Raw Bell Dry Ride?

I need a medium-heavy ride good for crashriding.

...

If I don't get an answer in here I'm starting a thread.

the dry doesnt have much wash. i would go with the medium heavy AA but i dont know if it will crash like you want it to.

I don't really plan on crashing it, just riding it with the shoulder for some nice wash.

You ever heard the Stone Temple Pilots drummer? He crashrides a medium-heavy ride. His is a Paiste though and I want something like that but not as expensive.

When it comes to hats, there is no such thing as 'personal choice' and 'opinions.' I have never heard of those words before. What language are they?

i would say just try it out. I could go shoulder ride my raw bell right now and let you know how it sounds.

OK its too pingy the AA raw bell is. Didnt get much wash at all from it.

Looking for a crash

I'm looking for a crash that can be used as primary crash. I'd like something that sounds good at all volumes, is good in live situations, something that i can thrash the hell out of but still has a nice musical quality to it. An overall nice crash sound.

okay, seriously dude, chill out, we know you love your new beats, but in drum lesson today we put new beats up against my new sizzle hats and my sizzle hats DOMINATED the new beats.

Hey guys. Ok mum said she might buy me a cymbal for christmas. So it would have to be crash cymbal due to prices. I originally wanted either 17 or 19 A Custom Crash. however I've found somewhere which does some paiste 2002's like £30 cheaper! I'm not sure what to ask for!! I will be buying hihats with my xmas and bday money, so dont worry about that. What should I go for? Thanks !

dont thrash the cymbal. crash it. =D

Go with something that is a larger size. 18 or 19. I would stick with an 18 though as a primary thats just my preference. The larger sizes are going to cut better too. There are lots of crashes out there with great musical qualities. I would recommend a medium thin crash or a medium crash. anything heavier than that might not sound to musical in a heavier size. Look into Sabian AAXplosion crashes, HHXplosion crashes, HHX stage crashes, AAX stage crashes, AA medium crash, AA medium thin crash, Zildjian A series crashses Zildjian A custom medium crashes, etc, etc. Paiste 2002, Paiste Alpha. The list goes on really. I would recommend any medium weight crash though might be good for what you descibed.

its up to you really. A customs and 2002s crashes are both nice and you cant go wrong with either one. Oh and go with the 19. =D

i meant 'thrash' as in being able to crash the cymbal without having be really withdrawed in hitting it.

i was just making a dumb joke. =D

medium and medium thin crashes will be your best bet though dude. they dont need to be wailed on to get a nice crash out of it like heavier cymbals do.

Kayne815 11-16-2006 08:28 PM

lol whoops didn't catch that. too tired. yah thanks man, ive been looking for that nice crash but i didn't know where to look.

Yeah. I'm probably gonna go with the AA Medium-Heavy then.

Thanks for the help.

Yeh, I think I have to get an 18" 'Cos there's no 19" for paiste. But I'll save my mum money and get the 2002. And then buy the A Customs after :D!

Can I get an amen to that.

Sizzle hats rule

santi3hg 11-17-2006 07:27 PM

Hey, I'm in the market for a new ride and hats.

Hats I would prefer 14" and well adaptive to rock and is versatile as well.

The ride I'm looking would need to have a nice bell, not dry but it cuts, as well as a bit of washyness to it.

Thanks

alurny 11-17-2006 07:31 PM

Hey! I am looking to upgrade from my current gong/bin lid/tin foil cymbals I got with my kit. I was thinking of jumping in and getting some:

Sabian AAX stage (£275 for 14" Hats, 16" Crash and 20" ride).

Good idea? If you got any other ideas on what makes/models to look into it would be appreciated. I play rock most of the time. Thanks.

Chris

i'd say 14'' quick beats for the hats, and maybe an AA medium, K Custom, A Custom, or 2oo2

and the sizzle hats are mad sexy, when i play them alone they do ring out a little much because of the rivets, but when i play with other ppl they sound godly

I wonder if I should bother responding to him, otherwise you'll go on a bitchfest on me.

HeLLmO 11-17-2006 09:12 PM

nah dude, it's cool, i won't go on a bitchfest, don't worry. i do however feel that if someone is lookin' for new hats you should let others post more ideas before you just say new beats
