Okay, I have all of Dream Theater's albums execpt for 'When Dream & Day Unite' and 'Scenes From A Memory.'
I heard that WDADU kinda sucks becuase of the singer, and that SFAM is too progressive. So I'm sort of holding out on both. Which of those albums should I get next? |
Definitely SFAM. WDADU is just bad. Bad recording quality so you can't easily hear the brilliance of the musicianship and bad singer, so.....yeah.

Is it easy to listen to? 'Cause I heard that's the hardest part about that album. |
SFAM...hands down, just get the live versions of the WDADU songs with James on...easy as pie.

The thing with SFAM is that to some DT fans, It's their best album, and others...it's their worst. |
i've got every album except WDADU (and live CD's) and i don't feel complete without it.
i'm sure there's something to like on it right? i didn't really like "only a matter of time" off of budokan. |
i like how the site turns blue once you log in :]
anyway, has anyone heard james labrie's solo CD "elements of persuasion?" i think it's phenomenal, especially the slower, mellower tracks... and the guitarrist he uses, marco sfogli? he cites petrucci as one of his influences and that definitely shows :] amazing guy and he's only 24 O_O |

Are you insane?!? I have never heard a DT fan in my life who has called SFAM their worst album. Most fans rate it as one of, if not the best. I didn't find it difficult to listen to at all, it was the 2nd DT album I ever listened to after ToT, and I listened to it all the way through and it blew me away. Whereas a lot of their other albums (i.e. Awake) I didn't enjoy until after quite a few listens. In conclusion, get SFAM now! The live versions of the songs with James are much better, (there's a couple on Live at the Marquee). You don't like Only a Matter of Time? I think it's a really good song. |
SFAM is my thrid favourite DT album, behind I&W And ToT, but just ahead of octavarium.

IMO
I&W>SFAM so I recommend you getting that first. SFAM is great stuff though, but it can't top I&W imo |

I could say a couple of maiden albums, but nothing else...
indeed, the album is so well balanced and just...perfect. and not to forget it has LaBrie's finest vocal work. the high notes on Learning To Live /drool |

Yeah...but with all of what you guys said earlier...I'll get SFAM. I'm not in a hurry though. |
Who wants to hear my rankings of the albums??? What?...all of you? OK then:naughty: .
I&W SFAM TOT 6DOIT 8V Awake FII WDADU Twas hard to not put any = or /'s in there...:upset: . |
If you swap 8vm and 6DOIT round, that's mine, too... and ToT and SFAM, as I said earlier.
|
Lord Abortion's rankings...
I&W TOT SFAM 8V 6DOIT Awake FII WDADU I am so cool:cool: |
There is very little I have ever heard that tops I&W...
I could say a couple of maiden albums, but nothing else...
I&W is perfect, seriously. Theres not a single track which I think they could do without. The musicianship is miles above the bar. A few albums do top it though. My list goes something like this: I&W SFAM ACOS TOT Awake 6DOIT 8vm FII (Haven't heard all of this, but barring Lines in the Sand, its all bad) WDADU (Once more, haven't heard this all, but its all bad. Live versions with James are very tastfull, though) |
FII (Haven't heard all of this, but barring Lines in the Sand, its all bad)
i don't think it's as bad of an album as everyone says it is. lines in the sand, as you said, is a very good song, so is peruvian skies, and trial of tears is on of my favorite dream theater songs. songs like just let me breathe and burning my soul really are terrible though. never EVER write songs about dissatisfaction with your record label. my list would go: 6DOIT (seriously underrated) Awake I&W SFAM 8V TOT FII WDADU |
never EVER write songs about dissatisfaction with your record label.
Hey, the Smiths managed it brilliantly with Frankly, Mr Shankly |
since i haven't heard that song, i'll narrow my statement down to just saying that mike portnoy should not write about his record label troubles. his effort came out somewhat less than brilliant.
|
to me, on I&W, pull me under sounds a tad out of place, but it's a great song nonetheless. it just doesn't seem to "fit" with the rest of the album.
im definitely saying: SFAM I&W ToT 6DOIT (goodnight kiss outro solo anyone?) 8VM Awake FII cant say anything abt WDADU yet... |
I never really liked Pull Me Under that much... just don't see the magic. :upset:

can somone tell me there greatest song please
can somone tell me there greatest song please
Octavarium is my favorite song of theirs... Anyway, I have been listening to Awake more and I now am obsessed with the second half of the cd. My favorite song is probably the last song on there "Space-Dye Vest". The piano is just so great hearing, I love piano mixed into rock songs, to me it just gives it more atmosphere. Obviously I can say the same for keyboards, but I hope you guys understand my point. |
can somone tell me there greatest song please
With a band as varied as DT it's hard to pick one song that shows everything that they are capable of. I agree with Octavarium, then probably Metropolis Pt. 1 and A Change Of Seasons as well. A Change of Seasons Octavarium Metropolis pt. 1 Learning to Live They're my personal faves:thumb: . |
I have that video. Post your E-Mails and I'll upload it.
nowitzki is right about the quality though. It's not brilliant.
Is this the one from Japan? |
can somone tell me there greatest song please
Metropolis pt 1 and the glass prison (13 minutes of pure magic imo). |
I like surrounded and space dye vest best...
The live version of the former is magnificent. I like pull me under alot, the chorus is great and it's good for getting people into DT, because it's not too proggy and more of a song for people who aren't diehard DT fans... |
