man, i wish you could break that down a little further for me

i feel like a moron when i read that
May I share the same feeling ???

kurrpt'd 06-29-2006 09:05 AM
thats kind of lame because they were two completely different responses what with one being the most (confusing and) deep explanation of chord substitution and harmonic theory for jazz outside of the jazz forum's jazz theory thread and the other is a joke with a pal
he was clearly acting like an arse hat. Argueing with him is pointless, I'm sure you know. I just like to make my views clear

edit : i practiced glasgow kiss for the first time in forever last night

mjhohams 06-29-2006 09:09 AM

some general chord voicings to use are (these are really square but help to hear, just in case youre not so familiar with too many 7th chords)

min7 (this is Dm7, but the generic shapes fit anywhere like all shapes on guitar)

x--10
6--10
5--10
7--10
5--12
x--10

7th chord (G7 here)

3--x
3--12
4--10
3--12
5--10
3--x

Maj7 (CM7 here)

x--8
5--8
4--9
5--9
3--10
x--8

remember that its important to know the notes of the chords rather than just knowing shapes

edit (so i dont double post ) i should probably write all proper and make a big lesson on some generic stuff someday or work with sam or walker to do it, or anyone in the jazz forum that knows their crap (better than me im sure)

this is really the biggest thing ive been working on. Its pointless to memorize chords if you cant discern what they are made up of, and when you should use them.

That one solo (after the clean part) in Glasgow kiss, I can almost play it pretty decent. Only the little tapping part in it is a bit annoying, still have to practise on that. But most of the rest in that solo I can play up to tempo already.

mjhohams 06-29-2006 09:13 AM

yeah well im all for in the end shapes helping a guitarist get the muscle memory of what theyre playing together so you can use it in say, a combo setting with improvisation and accompany parts

but if you dont know it on paper then you may as well be no higher than the shredder who reads steve vai tabs and has "perfect" technique

kurrpt'd 06-29-2006 09:14 AM

excellent.

I can play most of the parts up to speed, but they are perfect enough for me yet, so i wont try to claim anything

i find the main riff good practice for alternate picking, so i come back to that every now and again

I was also practicing the intro to universal mind. getting that shizz up to 155 is gonna take me forever

edit : on paper, i dont find theory that hard at all, or discerning what makes up a chord, or what chords i could possibly use. Its when i leave that, and go to the guitar, that it all feels like mush

wouter 06-29-2006 09:16 AM

lol, I could play the intro to universal mind up to 140 a while ago.
But I haven't practised that anymore for a while.

mjhohams 06-29-2006 09:18 AM

yeah kurrpt i am the same but its because i can understand a lot of it (except for that "nonfunctional" harmony crap) real quick without much trouble and i havent had the time i want to practice every day like most people do for summer

kurrpt'd 06-29-2006 09:18 AM

i think the best ive done was about 130ish.

for some reason, in the past 2 months, it seems my focus is better. I wanted to practice some string skipping, and i still find that intro challenging. I think i may just have to make it a daily ritual now

edit to mj: i find i get lost mostly when people spout out scale/chord combinations. Its not that i couldnt sit down, and figure it out, and compare notes to make sure im on the same page. Its almost as if i should know what they mean when the say it, instead of assuming "o, yea, those notes ARE in the chord"

AG 06-29-2006 09:19 AM

I want to learn the middle solo from Damage Control. That is the best I've ever heard Petrucci play.

Amit 06-29-2006 09:23 AM

i haven't been impressed by a guitar solo in like two years

not even john mclaughlin's stuff

kurrpt'd 06-29-2006 09:25 AM

though i cant listen to all of his work, seeing him live is magnificent.

He really doesnt shred like people make him out as. I think he did like 1 sweep the entire philly show, a tiny bit of tapping, and the rest, he basically faded into the background

edit : im impressed with some of the loomis dimished sweep solos (specifically river dragon)

Amit 06-29-2006 09:30 AM

see i can't understand how someone can be impressed by something so specific and simplistic that it's harmonic character can be actually described in its name (in this case, diminished sweeps)

AG 06-29-2006 09:31 AM

I think having such high standards is kind of sad. You miss out on that 'omg wow' factor that us mere mortals feel every so often.

Shame.

kurrpt'd 06-29-2006 09:32 AM
see i can't understand how someone can be impressed by something so specific and simplistic that it's harmonic character can be actually described in its name (in this case, diminished sweeps)
simplistic, sure. I think it fits the song quite nicely. In terms of performing the sweeps, its a completely different story.

Amit 06-29-2006 09:34 AM

i'm not sure how i have high standards since i'm impressed by little things like the stratocaster melody in ennio morricone's a fistful of dollars or the timbral lushness of mew's music

so umm yeah explain that

or an even better example; i'm in love with this song

Mild_child 06-29-2006 09:34 AM

-=The_Dude=- 06-29-2006 09:34 AM

Woohoo I won 40 bucks playing poker last night

Timm 06-29-2006 09:35 AM

speed hasn't impressed me in years and it never will again

np an anouar braham piece
shame I don't have the track names

Nick 06-29-2006 09:38 AM

musictheory.net isn't cutting it anymore

Amit 06-29-2006 09:39 AM
simplistic, sure. I think it fits the song quite nicely. In terms of performing the sweeps, its a completely different story.
all it takes is practice

I cleaned everybody out in 2 hours. I was drunk off my rocker too

mjhohams 06-29-2006 09:40 AM

a lot of what ive learned has been from people not the internet and my own questioning and answering i guess too in some cases

www.petethomas.co.uk/jazz-theory.html

thats the only site ive really used to learn much jazz theory wise

Amit 06-29-2006 09:45 AM

hey guys you know what are nice

bluetooth headphones

i recommend getting a pair especially for when you're recording or working out (hah as if any of you work out :p)

kurrpt'd 06-29-2006 09:45 AM
I cleaned everybody out in 2 hours. I was drunk off my rocker too
well, thats cool then.

mj : thats really the only way id get a teacher again, and i would prefer it to be someone in the field of jazz, that can answer just about any question.

amit : i really dont see the need to "work out" anymore. Staying active is good enough for me.

I might actually start skating again
