The biggest loss would be on Opeth's softer side. Lopez's playing on the Dam nation record was AWESOME, which part of the reason why it's one of my favorites by the band (I AM a drummer, after all :p ). He's more of a groove/feel player, and he tends to leave his parts pretty open...which allows him alot of room to improvise live. I really like that style of playing, and it's an approach that is sorely missed in the heavy metal field. Make no mistake about it, Lopez is exceptional.

denboy 09-04-2005 11:28 PM

Ooh, good point!.. I doubt any other drummer could have made Damnation as sexy as it is

lost_profits 09-05-2005 12:30 AM
Gene Hoglan could easily nail every single note that Martin has ever played. It's nothing against Lopez; I love his style, and he's a fantastic drummer. However, quite simply, Hoglan isn't human. I would be surprised if there was anything that he CAN'T do on the drumset.

Pure opinion here, after listening to S.Y.L, Hoglan does nothing for me at all.
Even some of the Death songs (Crystal Mountain) the drums sound uninspiring. If it's the production, shoot me, but It sounded like someone hitting paint drums.

agrees

I love Lopez personally. Not only did he rock on Damntion, but I think he did rather well on Deliverance. Nothing incredible, but I really like the raw feel the drums brought on that cd, and the double bass sounded really cool.

i am the robots 09-05-2005 12:42 AM

Why doesn't anybody understand that Nordin was far superior to Lopez, and that though Lopez is amazing, the drumming on the first two records > the drumming now, but losing Lopez would suck too, I love his style.

Darkness 09-05-2005 12:46 AM

Really? I saw nothing that specail in his drumming. Lopez didn't do anything amazing on the first couple albums he was on with Opeth, but D&D rocked.

Slapping Penguin 09-05-2005 03:58 AM

Well I feel the biggest lost to Opeth was DeFalla. His bass playing was awesome. Yeah Mendez is good he even does some cool slap lines on the new album but Defalla SWEET!

epihasi 09-05-2005 06:33 AM

I have the LAMENTATIONS dvd, and Lopez mentioned, that Mikael tells him the ideas of how he "roughly" wants the drums to sound...And Lopez then goes from there...He said, that he does like 90% of the drum parts alone...

Darkness 09-05-2005 10:57 AM

Someone contact a mod for the name change... it seems most people agree.

I agree with Johan DeFarfalla lines, they were really unique. This new album is the first time I really heard Mendez really shine, and I have hope that he can match Defarfalla's lines.

On the drumming side, I prefer Lopez over Nordin by a mile. Nordin was alright, but Lopez has such a feel to drumming that absolutely cannot be matched. I mean listen to his snare rolls and how he adds touch with them to the rest of his drumming.

I always thought it was actually spelled 'upon'? But then, I can't really speak English, or anything else for that matter.

Probably, I'm a horrible speller. :upset:

However, quite simply, Hoglan isn't human. I would be surprised if there was anything that he CAN'T do on the drumset. As an example, he recorded all of the drum tracks for the last SYL record (featuring some very insane playing), in about 2 days.

However, I read somewhere that they got someone else as a permanent replacement, so I'm not sure. As for what I've heard, Martin is very sick...some sort of blood disease that he's had for a very long time. He may not be back until the end of this year...which sucks.
I'm just not totally sure about this... I saw Hoglan in Orlando at SOTU, and something about his playing in the Drapery falls was off. He didn't do the complex riding Lobez does, only a streight ahead down beat. Maybe that was complemented by the fact that sound was totally screwed in Orlando, but something seemed off.

bball_1523 09-05-2005 01:23 PM

is anyone going to the Hollywood, CA show for Opeth? I will be there and the tickets cost $18!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! awesome pricing, but I gotta leave from school to get there.

Darkness 09-05-2005 01:24 PM

I can't believe theres no date for Edmonton... :( This is terrible, I was looking forward to this so much...

I am going. My ticket wound up being $31 after all the ticketmaster "service" charges.

Deth 09-05-2005 02:59 PM

My show is by far the best. It's on a Friday I have off from school.

I think Defarfalla was amazing, but his style wouldn't have fit in nearly as well after Opeth got rid of the harmony stuff from the first 2 albums.

Darkness 09-05-2005 03:03 PM

I hated his tone so much... hes good, and I like his bass lines but man its annoying on To Bid you Fairwell. Its all... bad sounding. I don't really know how to describe it just annoys me so much.

Neurotoxin 09-05-2005 03:07 PM

I love his bass tone on To Bid You Farewell!

Darkness 09-05-2005 03:07 PM

It almost recks the song for me.

I was there!

I didn't notice anything off though. I'm not into drums at all, so I probably wouldn't have noticed anyway. I was wanting there to be a signing but Opeth didn't have that day. I wanted to talk to Mikael so bad... :upset:

Deth 09-05-2005 03:10 PM

Nah, his tone is fine. You're just crazy.

Tizzle 09-05-2005 03:11 PM

It's a fretless on to bid you farewell, and **** fine too.

Neurotoxin 09-05-2005 03:12 PM
Nah, his tone is fine. You're just crazy.
I'm glad I'm not alone. Thank you!

TBYF is probably one of my favourite songs to play by Opeth. I know the majority of the guitar and all of the bass, and I plan on covering it at my school's coffee house. I also plan on covering Windowpane.

Darkness 09-05-2005 03:15 PM

I know I'm crazy, out of everyone I talk to I'm the only one who doesn't like the bass tone on that song.

Damien - I met him. :D He signed a bunch of stuff for me to. :D

Oh you lucky fucknut :(

Where did you see them?

Darkness 09-05-2005 03:41 PM

Edmonton Alberta Canada. On SOTU.

RouteOne 09-05-2005 04:35 PM

GOOD GOD. I've been argueing in that Trivium thread for days now, and they insulted Porcupine tree....that was the last straw.
