I didn't even learn how to stay in key during lessons. I know all the keys though so..
Most of the stuff I play ends up being in C.

What notes are there in the key of C?

C D E F G A B

That means, as long as you use those notes, and not any others (although some others probably wouldn't sound bad), you'll be on key.

Which also means you should learn where the notes are on the neck. At least on the E and A string so you can find the others by using octave chords.
Jon: Eh, use it in a fast metal setting :)

Bah, I like mid-tempo metal.

It's fake, but it's niiiccee.

C is generally the easiest to play in. I find anyways. I know where most notes are on E and A, although not all off by heart. I just need to start practicing lots more.

Lame, get some DM.

Well obviously lol.

P.S. I don't know how to stay in key, I just play and if I hit a wrong note I can tell and don't play it again.

I didn't think they were that big. Too bad it's fake though.:(

I play in what ever key the song calls for. I love just putting small riffs in other songs. Like blink songs. Really easy.

I know the two highest strings and the two lowest like reflex. The other two strings a bit of thought (making octave chords in my mind, probably).

I generally stay in Key of F for most of my heavy things. (That C, but with a flat b.)

Sounds real nice.

Well, I mean when I write music. I love jazzing (I don't mean actually jazz, I mean adding extra notes and riffs) up cover songs when I play them though. I always add extra octave chords when I play Finch songs.

Oh and I'm playing 3 Simple Words for a school open mic night. I wasn't going to sing, but the guy I'm doing it with (haha) pussied out. No biggie. Wish me luck, all.

Guess and check is a bad way to play. Especially if your mid-breakdown and want to add an improvised lead riff like I do with the band all the time.

B 12-11-2005 09:59 PM

For any of you who taught yourselves, what kind of websites did you use? If any at all of course.

Although the language is a bit confusing for me, because I only really learned guitar theory (meaning I don't know what the **** a tonic is)

If you need any help dude, just ask.

I always improv a song several times before performing it live. But I know scales, I just don't know names and such.

Brandon: For theory? None, just my MT class in HS.

Tonic is the root.

I don't really write, but I mess around on the guitar a bunch. I have tried to write some before. I have one in e minor. Kind of like Welcome Home. The rest sound really pop-punky with lots of power chords.

Good luck with that.

Brandon: I looked at some guitar books, read archives/lessons on here, watched a guitar vid that my dad had, and looked at a bunch of tablature.

Thanks Jon.

Vince: I'm taking music now so I'm learning some theory but there's no guitar stuff. It's all Brass and Woodwind instruments. A lot of it is the same but a lot is different too.

Anyways. Night guys. And thanks.

DJ Ducksauce 12-11-2005 10:07 PM

In piano, we learn chromatic/diatonic/intervals/scales/tonic/dominant/subdominant/triads/all that shit

Night Brandon.

I think I'm off as well.

Night Y'all.
Outside of my lessons, I have NEVER needed to use a dimished scale. Ever.

I just know my minor and major scale (which means I know modes too, I spose. A Dorian is really just a B major and what not) forms. And pentatonic. That's all I've ever really used.

Although that may just be a sign that I suck at guitar.

(And you said you're doing blues...whenever I did blues I did improvising and blues scales. But oh well.)
What if you see a diminished chord?

In most rock and pop, when you usually stay in one key, then yeah you usually can just get away with the diatonic notes in that key. But in other stuff in Jazz when you're modulating all over the place, it's good to know your modes. Pentatonic scales are good too, but they're basically minor or major scales with a couple notes taken out.

I never said I was doing blues...? Jazz, son! Jazz!!!

And also it's hard to study Jazz tunes when I just keep listening to Birdland over and over again :(

And also I saw Narnia tonight and it was totally sweet. What's that, you have a huge army? We'll just send some RHINOS TO CHARGE AT YOU FUCK YEAH

Kif 12-12-2005 03:19 AM

So apparently Fall Out Boy got punk'd. I might download that episode next week

Excursions 12-12-2005 03:24 AM

Hah, Rancid Daniel Against Me is playing two shows in New Zealand in Febuary. I might go just so I can spit on their faces for being in such a faggot filled band.

Im joking, I would like to go though if I don't see The Stooges. Against Me are probably one of the punk bands of our generation even if im not much of a fan.

Emphasize on the "next week" part.

Kif 12-12-2005 08:07 AM

God my school is so unorganized. I was off for about 2 weeks with a bad flu, then about 2 more days because I felt sick again with it. Just this weekend I got a letter saying I hadn't been to form by one of the heads, and today we got another saying I hadn't been to lessons for the past few weeks. Bareing in mind I did ring in and say I was poorly with flu.

Idiots.

Dead Star 12-12-2005 08:42 AM

I'm off today. I have a sore throat.

:(

EDIT - I'm not sure about my new mp3 player, I started putting songs on it at about 12, and its only at 31%.

I really don't know how it works too, its a bit complicated.

I expected better from Sony.

Kif 12-12-2005 08:56 AM

My Sony Minidisc was a piece of piss to use. Install the software, connect it via USB, transfer songs using the software.
My Sony Minidisc was a piece of piss to use. Install the software, connect it via USB, transfer songs using the software.
My brother has one of those and loves it.

Dead Star 12-12-2005 09:07 AM

The software you get with it looks a lot like Itunes.

Its not really complicated to use, its just that I don't know why its taking so long, or where its up to, as the sync list only goes up to Less Than Jake on my library.

Its finished up to there, but yet its still transferring.

I would take a screenshot, but it would kill my computer if I opened up Paint.

Kif 12-12-2005 10:10 AM

NP: Lostprophets - "Start Something" (Start Something Advance)

I remember when I saw them at Leeds. They were the most energetic band on the Friday (Bear in mind Green Day and Thrice played that day too), it was amazing. The only thing that bugged me was that the lead singer put on an American accent, as if people from Britain wouldn't notice.

PDWAB 12-12-2005 10:13 AM

So guess who will be done with school in about 2 hours?

Me, baby.

/runs off and takes final

Kif 12-12-2005 10:14 AM

Untitled 12-12-2005 11:35 AM

Haha, amazing, that fire down south has realy affected one of the big food places around here.

Theres two places that make buns for McDonalds in the Uk, one is here in heywood, my dad works there, and the other is right next to that oil place, and the blast blew one of the walls down there, so the one up here has to do all the orders for all of the uk, insted of north/midlands/scotland. Ha.

Kif 12-12-2005 11:43 AM

Lucky I don't go to Mcdonalds then

Oh, we finish this week. Well, one half of our 6th form do, the other (My half) finish next Tuesday. Luckily I only have one lesson during those 2 days, and I have opted not to go to it :D

I'm downloading Pro Tools so I can do some schoolwork at home, and record better :D

Everything's coming up Milhouse!
