Couple of questions.

Are there any decent books to read up about hip hop history? I've looked in the past and remember being surprised at how little had been written on the subject. I'm basically looking to read Our Band Could Be Your Life, but about hip hop.

What are some good movies with prevalent hip hop soundtracks/themes? Watched La Haine last night and it made me want to see other films that feature hip hop.
A good one about DC Hip Hop just came out called Diamonds in the Rough.

exredhouseresident 11-21-2009 02:10 PM

New Jersey Drive is a great movie with an even greater soundtrack.

Jaundice 12-04-2009 01:16 PM

The Carter Rebirth is supposed to be coming out in a couple weeks

i don't know if it actually will tho

illmitch 12-04-2009 02:19 PM

Jaundice 12-04-2009 02:44 PM

Meh, I don't care for it particularly. He's done far better songs.

illmitch 12-04-2009 03:02 PM

really? i think its one of the greatest songs hes ever made, his flow is ridiculous

"staying on point like a unicorn, strapped with a unabomb
every day’s a work day but don’t wear a uniform
Gucci Mane the dapper don, capper like a Capricorn
trapper month goin on a money making murder"

"thumbprint me, fingerprint me
but can we agree to disagree?
I’m from East Atlanta 6 where the boys dump bricks
but we don’t bump The Blueprint 3"

Jaundice 12-04-2009 03:08 PM

nothing wrong with the lyrics, but the beat was killing me and i didn't really notice any flow to it

Jawaharal 12-06-2009 10:22 AM

new gucci is damn good from what ive listened to so far.

bingo is ****ing good even though it guests soulja boy and waka flocka

SgtBaker 12-06-2009 12:13 PM

raekwon was decent. the first act got on at like 930 and there were like 6 or 7 opening bands which is a bit much. its cool that they let local guys open up for bigger guys but thats alot of people. Raekwon finally got on at like 1230 and played for an hour and some.

de la were better, but they had an actually band so

Kyle 12-06-2009 01:05 PM

6 or 7 opening acts? It's cool to try and give local guys a leg up but that's way too many.

I saw Raekwon and Ghostface doing OBFCL1 in its entirety once. Good times.

SgtBaker 12-06-2009 01:20 PM

yea, it was just one after another. They had a guy in between who served as a host who would hop around to classic hip hop songs, which was nice at first but after awhile it was just like let raekwon come on, goddamn.

Kyle 12-07-2009 07:45 AM

Speaking of Raekwon, the first cut from Wu Massacre was played on the radio last week. It's a follow up to Meth Vs Chef from Tical. Listen here;
yeah i listened about halfway through his mixtape last night. great stuff. i'm a big Pill fan too.
pill was one of the many to open for raekwon I think. I've forgotten all of the names and what not but it sounded familiar and I went on his site and it says he was one of the guys that opened.

Rams 12-13-2009 06:59 PM

I love Gibbs' freestyle over the Flamboyant beat. It's relentless.

This album was surprisingly awesome. 4 - 4.5 out of 5. Prince Paul brought the beats.

kingsoby1 12-15-2009 08:36 PM
