Otherside-That version of Comfortably Numb is neither Tool nor Pink Floyd. The same guy sings the entire song, and it doesn't really sound like Gilmour or Waters. The solo is good, but it has a different kind of feel than the typical Gilmour style.
Hmm this is true, I didn't think it sounded like PF either, but it was the only thing I could really think of :\

Alright guys I have some total n00b questions for the guitarists in this thread...

I got a new guitar recently, and I want to play some Tool tunes with my friends. I'd like to get to an Adam Jones sound. I was going to get a pedal, and didn't know which pedal I should get first that would lead me in the direction of Adam's sound.
(If possible. I honestly don't know a thing about this stuff.)

Dr. Jake Destructo 04-23-2005 06:31 PM

Just go buy 10 random pedals and you'll get that Triad sound. :p

total n00b answer

There's lots of sites where you can find his EQ settings and stuff. do a search in the guitar forum for the soundfinder thread. It will have tons of links for you there. :thumb:

 The reason I laugh is that A LOT of their songs are quite anti-organized religion. So no, they aren't. They're progressive rock and border on metal. They're listed by many other sources as being metal, but on this site people mainly refer to them as heavy progressive rock.
I'll give you a song from each album, though:
"Sober" - Undertow
"46&2" - Ænima
"Lateralus" - Lateralus

There are MANY good songs by them. But those are ones that have gotten people interested.

justinb123 04-23-2005 06:54 PM

ty man ill give em a try

Magicaltroll 04-23-2005 06:58 PM

I heard Fourty Six & 2 on the radio today

The only Tool songs I've heard on the radio are Schism, Lateralus, Sober, Ænema, and Stinkfist. Mainly Schism and Sober, though.

Arrakakaka 04-23-2005 08:09 PM

The only song's on the radio from Tool that I've heard were H., Schism, and Sober.

Futuro 04-23-2005 08:47 PM

h is my favorite tool song but i have never heard it on the radio

i have heard stinkfist and parabola (that was a big hit for a while on a local station)

Darkness 04-23-2005 08:47 PM

I don't think I've heard any tool on the radio... though I don't listen to the radio... at all..

Merkaba 04-23-2005 08:54 PM

Kage 04-23-2005 09:02 PM

Though I do owe my Tool fandom to the radio, I'm actually somewhat glad they don't play much Tool on my radio stations.

You simply won't be able to match his sound perfectly, but you can get close enough to satisfy yourself, especially since you're not a very experienced player (or maybe you are?).

Depending on your amp and what guitar you have, you really can't go wrong with an Ibanez Tube Screamer. That or a Boss DS-1 which shouldn't cost you more than $30-40. With those and a decent amp, you should be able to tweak your sound enough to get a sound you like. I don't know about Adam's specific EQ. He uses three different types of amps simultaneously, but I'm pretty sure he uses his amp distortion as opposed to a pedal or rack effect (and Mesa Boogie amp distortion is the king of all distortions).

Now, if you have a crappy amp, you can make it a ton better for relatively cheap by loading it with Vintage 30 speakers. If you do that, you should be set.

Last night, I was driving around with a few of my buddies(and girls lmao) and the DJ was talking, but in the background I could hear Triad Thundering away. I was like "Oh shii, it's Triad" and my friends were all "Ewwy let's put on some hip hop to shrink my balls."

:upset:

Yeah, it was wierd.

Darkness 04-23-2005 10:38 PM

^ what the hell...

Anyways its kinda cool how Adam and Tom got an equal number of votes in the polls.

Tom ended up with 33, Adam had 30. :( Adam got snipped from the competition.

That brings up a new question. Wtf is so great about 50 cent? He's so god**** popular and he can't rap worth his name-sake.

Anyways, yea. Unfortunately a lot of the hot gals like sh!tty hip-hop.

Really? Yeah, that is pretty cool. Tom is probably better technically, but I'd be hard-pressed to make a decision between those two.

I didn't like when Schism was played to death, and I don't want them to become mainstream (I'm sure they don't either). Although, sometimes I can't help but enjoy seeing them get pub.

Huber 04-23-2005 10:56 PM

Tool comes on the radio a lot here. They're normally songs like Sober and Stinkfist. They still aren't very popular around here though because people then buy there albums expecting 10 or so tracks of Sober on each album and are disappointed.

Rap was awesome in the early 90's. Then Eminem became famous.

Dried Muffin Remnants 04-23-2005 11:02 PM

Really though, I can understand Eminem's popularity, because the guy can rhyme. But 50cent is a no-talent body builder.

Huber 04-23-2005 11:03 PM

Eminem is definetly > 50 cent, but both are pretty bad.
Really though, I can understand Eminem's popularity, because the guy can rhyme. But 50cent is a no-talent body builder.
His songs are boring. He sounds the same on almost all of them, and just adds a different beat.

Dr. Jake Destructo 04-23-2005 11:07 PM
Tool isn't really popular where I live. I get so excited when I see a car with a Tool bumper sticker. I always see this one blue car with 2 Tool stickers and a NIN window decal. I seriously want to know who this person is.
refl That reminds me, this year at one of our tennis matches I walked out of the bathroom and there was this guy with his back to me, and on the back of his shirt was the Ænima eye. I yelled out "Holy shi' a Tool fan!"

It was funny.

Dried Muffin Remnants 04-23-2005 11:08 PM

I'm just saying, the guy has talent and can actually rhyme. If 50 didn't look like he could bench press a house, then he'd still be a nobody.

I finally found a song where Jones shreds!!

Check out Cold and Ugly live off of Opiate. Around 2:45 he shreds the crap out of the fretboard. Bonus.

Yet, he listens to rappers who sing about bitches and hoes and money and dubs.
I do too.

I have the Aenima eye shirt, 3 lateralus shirts, and the Thinkman shirt, and this cool new one I found the other day.. it has a human heart on it with all the parts labeled.

Meh.. I only have one. I'll probably get another one at the next concert, that's usually where I get my band shirts.

Dr. Jake Destructo 04-23-2005 11:20 PM

I don't own a single Tool shirt, which is sad. I only have 2 Pink Floyd shirts, that's all. :-/

The JoZ 04-23-2005 11:24 PM

I have one Tool shirt, it's got T00L on the front, with the colorful Lateralus eye under it, and on the back has Thinkman with a bunch of Lateralus eyes in his hand and floating around him.

I have that heart one, and the AEnima eye one.

Off topic but I'm about to get off MX for awhile so I want to ask now. What's a good Tool guitar part besides Lateralus, The Patient, and Schism.

Edit: Not all of them, just a few.
