I got the Scarlet Letter coming up before I graduate. :upset:

I actually loved reading The Jungle when my civics teacher made us this year, which I thought would be horrible.
Les Mis is a great book, I haven't read the other two that you mention. They are true classics because they have stood the test of time, just because you don't like them it doesn't mean that they aren't genuine classics.

Shakespeare was a misunderstood pervert, accept it.
I like it for an easy read, but he isn't that great of a writer. I'll give him credit for being interesting.

its all opinion, i mean i like voltaires way of writing in candide, some people cant stand it , the constant plot without stopping for anyhting gives some people headaches. you might think its simple, or maybe you are just missing some subtle things. im not trying ot play off brown as an excellent author, but what defines a great author? i mean from an ecnomic stand point did he not make a killing on this book? i dont think he set out to write the next tolstoy, i mean who enjoys war and peace, or ujoyce's ulysses? i mean by literature critis all over the world these are two of the finest books around, but i cant remember one person enjoying reading either one of those.

DaveSavesTheDay 10-09-2006 08:27 PM

I haven't read either.

Efrim 10-09-2006 08:27 PM
Yeah, my mom told me his other book, Angels and Demons, is much better, but I'm just reading this one because it's for school.
I wasn't very happy with either. To each his own...

No, everything that's written in drawn out wordy olde language is a classic to these Starbucks intellectuals. The only reason they stand the test of time is because it would take a couple years to burn one copy of these bible-and-dictionary-in-one-sized fluffmanuals.

DaveSavesTheDay 10-09-2006 08:28 PM

On a lighter note, anyone ever heard of FM Static?

Spaceman Spiff 10-09-2006 08:28 PM

I've been reading some Philip Roth lately; he's a great writer.
Check these out:
Portnoy's Complaint
Operation Shylock
The Great American Novel

Getting pretty deep into literature...

So when we heading back to the usual topics of sex, alcohol, and drugs?

I love Voltaire. Have you read anymore of his stories? That man is unbelievably funny, and even the translated text manages to convey the beauty of some of his writings.

we could segue to bebop literature, focus in on burroughs and talk about how he wrote wild boys and naked lunch in the midst of a heroin binge and doesnt even remember writing them, he just stumbled across them after he sobered up a bit

Jody LeCompte 10-09-2006 08:32 PM

They suck, but the other band that the lead singer sings for is ok. Thousand foot krutch.

I have been reading a lot of CS Lewis' stuff lately, great author.

Is is possible to not start of with the Ginsberg?

BenJammin 10-09-2006 08:35 PM

Screw beat poets, Jesse. We need to talk Barth and post-modernist literature.

Jody LeCompte 10-09-2006 08:35 PM

I'm really feeling Dean Koontz right now.

I also am liking Frank Peretti and Stephen Coonts.
