I'm not very good with genres. A few examples of the stuff that I'm listening to:
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Sigur Ros
Forward Russia
Kayo Dot

I'm looking for more stuff over the same lines. I realise that these bands aren't really similar, but anything in any of these directions would be much appreciated. Thanks. Also, apologies if this doesn't really belong here, I would have posted in alt/indie but they don't seem to have a recommendations thread.

Kingofdudes 10-19-2006 01:37 PM

Since you like Sigur and Godspeed, you might like this week's post-rock listening party band: Jaga Jazzist

Tyr 10-19-2006 01:39 PM

Also check out Red Sparowes.

randomthought9 10-20-2006 12:41 AM

Sorry for double post, I just wanted to make sure my question didn't get lost.

Hey, I was looking for some blues that's kinda chill like. I've been listening to John Mayer Trio a lot lately, so I guess something like that. Maybe something with clean guitars, but anything good.

I've only heard a little iForward, Russia!, but you might like Gospel. Have a look at their album The Moon is a Dead World.
Also check out Red Sparowes.
Thanks, will do. I've ordered At The Soundless Dawn. I see they are compared to Pelican, which can only be a good thing :)

I've found one on eBay but I'll have a look around to see if there's anything cheaper before I order.

Bartender 10-20-2006 12:09 PM

Well I got my copy from Amazon, but I just paid regular price for it (£10 or £11, I think) because I'd heard most of it before, thanks to Paranoidd. I think the site he links to is still up and working, if you want to hear them streamed beforehand.

(I'm assuming you're looking for post rock recommendations Ab, but I don't feel like going back a page and checking)

Explosions In The Sky
We Followed Tigers
And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead
A Silver Mt Zion
Mogwai
Mono
Grails

Holy Diver 10-23-2006 12:48 AM

I'm looking for some bands in the genre of progressive hard rock. I've found lots of progressive rock bands and lots of progressive metal bands, but none in between. Bands very similar to Rush and Dio-era Rainbow. Stuff like Led Zeppelin's Achilles Last Stand and Kashmir would also be in the range of what I'm looking for. Does the band(s) I'm looking for actually exist?

Stoic 10-23-2006 06:54 AM

Van Der Graaf Generator and King Crimson!

publicastration 10-25-2006 10:45 PM

Looking for

Bands like Sunn O)))'s album White2. The atmosphere and heavy bass with some droning guitar. Are there any?

Also how is 00 Void compared to Black One, White1&2, and Flight of the Behemoth?

Apocalyptic Raids 10-26-2006 07:50 AM

Earth
Boris (though it depends what album, so you might want to research a little... or ask Kage)
Khanate.

Kingofdudes 10-26-2006 11:37 AM

Hey Tojes, do you think you could send that link my way?
Van Der Graaf Generator and King Crimson!
I love King Crimson, but neither of these bands are anything like what I'm looking for. :p Basically I want some epic hard rock tunes (6 minutes+ in length) with lots of guitar riffage and mystical lyrics. Some keyboard/orchestral accompaniment would be great too.

Stoic 10-26-2006 03:53 PM

Something like Genesis - The Knife (song found on progarchives)?

Candlemass, first and foremost.

Reverend Bizarre. Goat Horn. Solitude Aeturnus

Bartender 12-04-2006 06:25 PM

I can't believe I still haven't gotten around to buying Goat Horn's stuff.

You may like Symphony X then. They are more Prog/Poewr Metal, than Hard Rock, but they sure are epic and progressive. Definetly worth checking out.

You may also like Dream Theater and Vanden Plas.

Tyler 12-04-2006 07:53 PM

Listen to Solitude's cover of Heaven and Hell at least. Do yourself a favour, seriously. It's outstanding.

KAMELOT.

More power than prog, but they have some ridiculously awesome arrangements.

Mojo2004 03-22-2007 07:03 AM

Kamelot do kick mucho buttocks. If you want to get hold of some of the best songs, try "When the Lights are Down," "The Haunting" and "Centre of the Universe"

You won't be disappointed :thumb:

Im looking for some real chilled out, relaxing stuff with acoustic guitars, strings etc. 'River man' by Nick drake is a good example.

thanks for any recommendations.

TojesDolan 03-22-2007 07:17 AM

I don't know why I don't find Kamelot appealing. I like Kalmah for cheesiness sakes.

AA-12 03-22-2007 08:14 AM

Kamelot isn't even really cheesy. I don't care for them either way though.

I find David Gilmour - On An Island pretty relaxing, try that.
