Eh, I don't blame you.

It was 99% the teacher's fault, though.

In middle school my teachers were ok, freshman and sophomore year my teacher was great, junior year my teacher was horrible, and because she was going to teach Spanish for seniors I decided to drop the language.

magicbus 05-03-2005 04:12 PM
English speaking people in general have developed apathy towards all languages that aren't English. :p

The 'Meh, I know the most important language in the world, why would I learn any other? Let them learn ours' feeling.

Combined mostly with the inability to properly learn a different language. :p

/bashes
Sounds like the common arrogant attitude many Americans have.

I took four years of French, but I don't remember much now...

I'd rather learn German, Italian, or possibly Spanish.

superpeer 05-03-2005 04:14 PM

Yeah, you should totally blame your Education system. :)

Languages I've taken over the years : Dutch (Flemish if we want to be chauvinistic), French, English, Latin, Old Greek and Spanish.

Bartender 05-03-2005 04:16 PM

In so much as I like any education system, I rather like my education system. I like to think I came away with a decent knowledge of German.

EDIT: my list would be; English, German, French and Latin.

I think British and American education system are more specialised, whereas we get a very broad education. I think that's why sometimes *you people* come off as ignorant, because some things are not addressed in certain educations, while we can talk about this and that, because we get a bit of everything.

Illmatic 05-03-2005 04:22 PM

Yeah.

A specialized education that won't help us out in the real world.

It's quite simple to explain though. Dutch is my native language, obviously I have to take that. English has become such an important language that there's no way around it, we have to take it. In South Belgium, everyone speaks French, so to get along with them Walloons, we have to take French, also Obligatory.

Latin or economics? The choice was easy for me, I had to take it for 2 hours per week and that was more than enough for me, it is soooo incredibly boring.

I only took Old Greek for one year, just to learn the crazy alphabet.

Then I had the choice: extra math or science or an extra language: I suck at maths and science, so yeah, Spanish it was.

I was talking more about the "blame your education system" part.

And "maths"? Silly Europeans.

Well, I felt like telling a story, anyway.

What's wrong with maths? I thought that was the cool thing to say? :upset:

Jom 05-03-2005 04:40 PM

Mandarin is the most-spoken language in the world.

/irrelevant, I think

English is one of the worst (in terms of difficulty) languages to learn. It's easier if you're exposed to it at an early age, but there are a ton of grammatical points and other BS that comes with the language.

Languages I've taken/know: English, Polish, Spanish.

Is Norwegian as difficult as it's supposed to be? With it's 26 cases or whatever it is.

Don't flatter yourself too much. :p

I think learning hundreds of Japanese symbols would be more difficult. Plus there are language that just have a totally different view on the world and say everything differently. For Western people English isn't *that* hard, sure not a lot of foreigners can spell everything right and get all the grammar right, but the native speakers can't either. :)
Peer: How long do you plan on staying in Belgium? I might be planning a trip out there.
Eh, I've lived here since I was born, I'm not leaving anytime soon, I think. :p
Is Norwegian as difficult as it's supposed to be? With it's 26 cases or whatever it is.
It's pretty easy to learn, actually, because the grammer is very similar to English. It's not like German where you have to structure your sentences completely different. Plus, a lot of words are very similar to English.

To Peer: One of my best friends just moved there from Sweden, and I want to come visit her.

Bartender 05-03-2005 04:59 PM

I picked up German pretty easily, though :-/

superpeer 05-03-2005 05:01 PM

German, Dutch, English, Swedish, they're all pretty similar, all Germanic.

Yeah, that's what I thought.

I think Italian would be nice to know though, if only for very restricted reasons.

superpeer 05-03-2005 05:10 PM

Meh, my image of Italian has been destroyed. My sister always learns these stupid phrases by heart and says them constantly, and it just sounds gay. A lot of Italian football players look gay too.

So now Italian sounds gay to me, everything my sister likes, I don't like.

lunch998 05-03-2005 05:12 PM

My dad's family is Italian but speaks English almost all the time. Eventually I'll probably get around to learning it.

I don't know exactly where, I'll ask her.

When are you headed to the Cape?

I am listening to the trippiest song ever.

Bartender 05-03-2005 05:21 PM

Which song is it?

Illmatic 05-03-2005 05:22 PM

August, if I can book a house there.

Right now I am listening to the song that comprises my user title.

Iron Butterfly - Iron Butterfly Theme

It's insane. I really, really like it.

Ray, what song is your user title from? Is it that song that Kanye produced?

Illmatic 05-03-2005 05:27 PM

"Everyday People" by Sly & the Family Stone.

ATM 05-03-2005 05:28 PM

What song am I thinking about? It's just a guy and a piano, and I believe Kanye produced it. Any idea what I am talking about?

Was Kanye rapping/singing or was someone else?

Oh, and on the subject, two other rock songs that would make great samples for rap tracks:

Jimi Hendrix - Burning of the Midnight Lamp
Mountain - Mississippi Queen

No, it was someone else singing. I think the song is called Ordinary People.

EDIT: Oh, it's by John Legend.

I've got a cool rap song by Apathy that samples Seven Nation Army.

:D My local CD store is having a "$2 off anything under $13, $3 of anything higher priced" sale. It's so awesome. I picked up Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come today. I's weird, but really sweet.

Not when there are only 50 or so you use in day to day conversation. And with the four languages, you can actually get away with writing Japanese words with English Letters.

Listen to The Cure's "Subway Song". You'll see that the White Stripes copied that bass riff.
