I am white and I feel like liking/disliking rap based on other people's opinions makes you a dumbass.
there's this phrase i've heard in two different songs.
"i don't rhyme for the sake of riddlin," or maybe it says "ritalin," i dunno.
where did that come from?
It's a famous line from Public Enemy ("Don't Believe the Hype"). Dilated Peoples are known to pay homage to a lot of famous rappers. Don't know about the Roots, I think it's because their MC is crap.
Like when you read a review from somebody who obviously isn't into hip hop saying something to the effect of... "Isn't it refreshing to hear a hip hop act not rapping about guns and bitches".

That annoys the crap out of me.
oh god i hate that **** so much

someone explain "conscious hip hop". ive never even heard that term.

ATM 10-20-2009 09:07 PM

In the olden days of white culture, people used to look up to Kings and Princes. These were the people that they adored, and every night they wished and hoped that somehow they could wake up and be just like them. But with Royal Families crumbling, that role has been filled by one man: Mos Def.

He is everything that white people dream about: authentic (”he’s from Brooklyn!”), funny (”he was on Chapelle show!”), artistic (have you heard “Black on Both Sides?”), an actor (”he’s in the new Gondry film!”) and not white (”I don’t see race”).

He has done an amazing job of being in big budget movies (The Italian Job) and having one of his songs become a white person wedding staple (Ms. Fat Booty) but still retaining authenticity and credibility.

If you find yourself in a social situation where you are asked to list your favorite actor or artist, you should always say Mos Def. This way you can name someone that everyone has heard of and you don’t look like you are trying to one up anybody. The only possible negative consequence is some white people might think “I wish I had said that first.”

illmitch 10-20-2009 10:06 PM

i wouldn't say that it's necessarily just socially conscious hip hop - you can be socially conscious without being conscious rap, e.g. Bun B - Get Cha Issue, Z-Ro - Another Song, Killer Mike - Pressue. i'd say its hip hop whose primary concern is being socially conscious, and which takes this as a higher concern over say interesting lyrics or production. it's when the song's main talking point is "he says xyz about the american government", not "he uses a complex rhyme scheme" or "he spits over a really good beat".

Anyone listened to Diamond District? Washington trio consisting of Oddisee, X.O and YU.

They're just releasing their debut this month, and on first listen it sounds really good.

flylo with a bunch of live musicians including the pianist who did ma dukes tribute, it's long (excellent) and actually reminds me of some bitches brew type grooves i'd love to hear flylo really work on a way of doing this, making the connection with these of thing more solid.

anyways it's dope, and groovy.

btw i have about 3-4 tracks made lately if one person want me to upload them in a rar ill do it, they're obviously new and probably better i might work more and 'make an EP' for fun this has some lyrics and looots of composition no samples, it's chill and spacey i could have it done up in about 15 minutes?

SgtBaker 10-25-2009 01:01 AM
