DimebagDarrell 09-18-2004 06:02 AM

it would be very difficult to give my top 5 thrash songs but im sure it would contain what you would expect: slayer, testament, exodus, heathen, kreator, megadeth etc.

manuscriptreplica 09-18-2004 06:06 AM
Not neccessarily the top 5, just 5 diverse thrash songs that you think show the genre's depth, height, and breadth.
By top 5 I meant that. I will explain though:

Exodus - Bonded by Blood - Just a classic anthem. Shows off the raw side of thrash.
Slayer - Angel of Death - Ditto. Shows off the pure ****ing speed of thrash.
Coroner - Suicide Command - one of the best technical thrash songs, ever.
Dark Angel - Perish in Flames - Another anthem. Similar to Slayer.
Anthrax - Caught in a Mosh - Another anthem. Shows the punky side of thrash.

There you go. Megadeth's Holy Wars should have got a mention, but I forgot about it.

Arise 09-18-2004 07:02 AM

Anthrax - Time
Sepultura - Slaves Of Pain
Megadeth - Holy Wars
Flotsam & Jetsam - Dig Me Up To Bury Me
Exodus - War Is My Sheppard

Technical and Tempo/riff-changing Thrash all the way, baby!

Then again, I would have a hard time limiting it to just 5, even if I could only pick one from each band

Shady Ultima 09-18-2004 08:57 AM

Slayer - Angel of Death
Megadeth - Peace Sells
Anthrax - Skeletons in The Closet
Dark Angel - Darkness Descends
Slayer - Seasons in The Abyss

Reasons
1. So ****ing fast, angry and loud. Thrash at it's best
2. A lot different than most thrash, has a lot of a punk sound to it.
3. Once again a very punky thrash song
4. Fast, heavy, and so **** good. Another Thrash Classic
5. Much slower and more musical, but then goes into much quicker thrash.

RCA 09-18-2004 09:28 AM

Top 5 songs to get someone into thrash (in no order):

1. Slayer - Necrophobic
2. Artillery - Hunger and Greed
3. Metallica - Disposable Heroes
4. Kreator - Flag of Hate
5. Dark Angel - Perish In Flames

Reasons:

1. Music is fast, vocals are gruesome and fast, blast beating then a tempo change, under two minutes, wicked solos. Great thrash.

2. Raw sounding thrash, starting off with a quick tremolo picked solo. The riff is also very catchy.

3. A person just getting into thrash should also listen to a band that they probably already know of. Disposable Heroes is a long thrash song, with fast riffs, and then some tempo changes as well. Also, you cannot deny Metallica's influence on thrash, no matter where they are today with their music.

4. Fast, raw sound, harsh vocals, will get the listener banging their head against the wall. A good representation of Kreator's early career.

5. Catchy riffs throughout, very fast, and Gene Hoglan's drumming on this song made me nut my pants.

Now Playing : War Ensemble (Live)

Decade of Aggression : Live is a very good album

Here's a video for you guys. It's Slayer's "War Ensemble" with Kevin Talley on drums. For those who don't Kevin Talley, he's played with Dying Fetus, Misery Index, and few other bands. Currently, he plays for Chimaira. *barf*

DisposableHeroes 09-18-2004 12:56 PM

downloading it now

that'll be Chimaira's third drummer, not that its important or overly interesting
yeh its a brillaint album the crowd go mental for war ensemble they do a great job with mandatory suicide too
When I find a band to play thrash in, I want to play the intro of Hell Awaits that cuts straight into "Raining Blood" on the main riff that plays after the intro, then after Raining Blood, and then cut right into War Ensemble.

That would be sweet to do :D

ThrashMaster27 09-18-2004 09:53 PM

Five songs for getting someone into Thrash eh?

1. Venom - Black Metal
2. WatchTower - Energetic Disassembly
3. Exodus - Toxic Waltz
4. Nuclear Assault - Critical Mass
5. Exhorder - The Law

1. Thrash in it's rawest form, plus it's my fave Venom song so it auto goes in there.
2. Silly tempo and time changes makes for excellent Thrash. Even though James McMaster sounds like a cheap Halford, WatchTower still slay.
3. Had to get an Exodus song in. I would have chosen Bonded By Blood, but The Toxic Waltz beats it by a small amount.
4. Along with Anthrax, Nuclear Assault have a distinct Punk sounding to them. Nothing beats a good bit of Thrash/Punk.
5. Proving that although Thrash died in the late 80's, a good band can emerge in the 90's and keep Thrash alive (for a while).

I would have done more of the typical songs and bands, but I think this sums up Thrash rather well. I wanted to add a Megadeth/Coroner/Anthrax song in aswell as plenty of other bands.....meh, I'm happy with my choices.

Shady Ultima 09-18-2004 10:58 PM

Has anyone noticed the first riff of Fade to Black and the First Riff of Good Mourning/Black Friday sound very similair? Does anyone here know if Dave actually came up with it or what?

manuscriptreplica 09-19-2004 01:22 AM

I didn't think the riffs sounded the same. They both use acoustics, which is pretty much the only similarity in my mind.

Something that sounds remarkably alike is:

Dark Angel's Darkness Descends (the song) the drumbeat is the one in One, by Metallica, which was used in Semtex Revolution, by Coroner.

ThrashMaster: Gehrig in the avatar!! Woot.

JMetallica 09-19-2004 05:08 AM

I think lars ganked that drum riff. Theres no difference.

Heh, who's that in the avatar?

LordDargon 09-19-2004 05:28 AM

^ Someone with Lou Gehrig's disease?

and is The Law good? I only have Slaughter in the Vatican which is great... brutal thrash \m/

DisposableHeroes 09-19-2004 05:41 AM

i've heard The Law isnt supposed to be a patch on Slaughter In The Vatician

RCA 09-19-2004 09:35 AM

I hate it when Blink 182 fans listen to "One" and say, "Omg they ripped off teh Adam's Song!". I just hate it.

Anyways, I'm getting a new guitar today, Dimebag Signature Jackson.

NP: Agoraphobic Nosebleed - North American Corpse Desecration

RCA 09-19-2004 05:45 PM

Yes, Arise, I meant Washburn, hehe. I was staring at a picture of a Jackson as I was typing my last post. My bad.

Today I picked up:

Obituary - The End Complete
Napalm Death - Utopia Banished
Vio-lence - Eternal Nightmares

All three albums kick alot of ***!!! :chug:

NP: Annihilator - Alice In Hell

GraveRobbersINC 09-19-2004 05:51 PM

What's Napalm Death like I found their Diatribes album for like 7 bucks today.
NP: Cannibal Corpse-Necropedophile

maidenmaniac 09-19-2004 05:59 PM

Dude is anyone hearing seeing the new megadeth lineup cause there coming to san deigo and im not missing that show for the world

ThrashMaster27 09-19-2004 08:58 PM

If you like early Napalm Death I'd steer clear of Diatribes, but I think it's a good album. Obituary - The End Complete ain't got anything on Slowly We Rot or Cause Of Death, but it's good mind you. Oh yeah, The Law I think is better than Slaughter In The Vatican, but I'll probably get most people disagreeing with me there.
