I've grown to hate Omar Rodriguez-Lopez a lot, after finding out how much of a pretentious prick he is. He has some good taste in music, but when it comes to writing it, I'm not feeling it at all.
I know it sounds crazy, but i never saw TMV as being overly pretentious. The new coheed album was more pretentious to me. I dont think the mars volta were like "You know what, lets make a song thats 30 minutes.", then finished it and said "What do you mean its only 7? Make weird noises!!!". I didnt like omar's solo album, though.

And sparta is boring.

Kif 04-07-2006 03:17 PM

I always see people I know when I go to shows, even if I had no idea they were going. I was off for 2 weeks with the flu a while ago, and people in my class were sure I was dead for some reason. Anyway, first day back was Tuesday, and my friend saw me at an Alkaline Trio show the night before. He was convinced I had been skiving for two weeks, and I had to explain that I wasn't.

But I got the Trio's signature and he didn't, so I don't care.

Have fun dude, that show is going to be sick.

I think Frances The Mute is pretty pretentious, but like I said, in the right mood it sounds amazing. I'm sure it sounds better stoned. And yeah, pretty much all of Omar's solo stuff sucks. His new CD is all in Dutch isn't it?
Have fun dude, that show is going to be sick.
Word, I'll review it when I get back.

Peace.

Dead Star 04-07-2006 03:20 PM

I only have De-loused in the Comotorium, and I love it so much.

B 04-07-2006 03:20 PM

I've never heard anything from Frances the Mute except the single "the Widow".

And I must say I like De-loused much better.

Chris: Later dude.

Haha, wouldnt doubt it.

But i wouldnt know if it sounds better stoned, ive never been stoned. Then again, im pretty sure everything would sound better stoned.

If youve only heard one song off of it, how can you assume De-loused is better?

I prefer Frances the Mute, even though the widow is a bit meh.

B 04-07-2006 03:24 PM

Because all their music sounds very similar.

Dead Star 04-07-2006 03:24 PM

I might download Frances The Mute later.

Kif 04-07-2006 03:27 PM

Frances only has 5 songs anyway. I bought the single for "The Widow" because it has the 6th song, "Frances The Mute" on. When you put that at the end of the album, and put the whole thing on repeat, it loops and becomes everlasting. Pretty cool

B 04-07-2006 03:27 PM

oshi-

I lied, I've actually heard three songs.

I forgot the other two.. so plainly I didn't care much for them. :)

Dead Star 04-07-2006 03:29 PM

Also, when you listen to the wierd bells and twangs at the beginning of the actual song 'frances the mute', the louder twangs use morse code to spell out 'tinnitus', which is the medical term for ringing of the ears.
Frances the Mute only has 5 songs?
Yeah, but 3 of them are around 10 minutes and one is 30 minutes.

Congrats on 6K.

Yeah, but the cd is split into 12 tracks if I remember correctly.
And they aren't exactly short songs.

Dead Star 04-07-2006 03:31 PM

Ah, I see.

B 04-07-2006 03:31 PM

Yeah, it's twelve tracks.

Cob: That's cool.

chumpradio 04-07-2006 03:34 PM

I'm listening to FTM right now because of you guys. I forgot how amazing this cd is.

cobert 04-07-2006 03:34 PM

Yeah, i found out aboout it over on the comatorium, a mars volta fan forum. A lot of the theories about the album over there are just waaaay too out there, but someone tied the entire CD in with the raping and murdering of women in juarez, mexico, which is what 'Invalid litter Dept' by ATDI is about. Overall though, that record follows some very broad concepts, unlike coheed, who just tell an interesting story whcih follows very specific things.

People are crazy and try to find connections with everything. You could probably find connections with tons of stuff the artist doesn't even know about if you look hard enough.

Yeah, it's like you could write the most basic lyrics ever, but if you looked at how fans interperet them, they could come up with some crazy metaphors because they are expecting there to be more to the song. If you get what I mean.
It's my plan for if I get famous. Write basic lyrics, then tell fans they need to work out the metaphors. It's bulletproof.

Yeah, but the juarez thing makes perfect sense.

And somebody tried to connect the CD with the show Twin Peaks. Awesome.

B 04-07-2006 03:44 PM

Fans just get too obsessed I think.

Cob: someone should propose it to Omar then. And see.

People try to relate songs to themselves through the metaphors and lyrics, which is why song meanings are so debatable (Until the writer says what they mean)

PDWAB 04-07-2006 03:48 PM

I think next month I'm going to rip PPOTM so I can call the thread "Wake Me Up Before You Joel-Joel"

Dead Star 04-07-2006 03:49 PM

You don't get your name in PPOTM Joel.

Duh.

B 04-07-2006 03:51 PM

Speaking of Juarez.

The vocalist in In Pieces sounds a lot like Shane from Silverstein in certain parts of the song Juarez, Mexico.

The part that's like "All we want is to be happy" or something similar.
