a friend of mine worked at tim horton's for like 2 years and told me to never ever buy the soup or chili.
and i walked over to tim horton's a while back at like 1 am to get a coffee and dougnut, and went to the drive-thru, and they refused to serve me. there was nobody behind me, but they were all "umm this is a drive-thru" and i was all "umm it takes 30 seconds to get a coffee and doughnut it's not a big deal and i dont drive and the front doors are closed this is my only option" and they were all "umm sorry" and closed the window. i haven't been there since. |
I respect your beliefs Chippy, but I just have one question. I've always believed that most religious people practice their religion because they a) want comfort for their problems in everyday life, and b) want to know where they're going after death. Now I'm curious why you couldn't solve a) with one's own intellectual thought, and advice from other, possibly wiser people.
i'm not entirely sure how to answer this statement, but i'll give it it a shot. The first thing i would ask is "what is religion?" After I had a definition which satisfied me, i would then ask "what is the point of the religion?" generalizing religious people as people looking for solace for their problems is only taking religion at point-blank face value. You're looking at the people, not the religion itself. Do a little research on the first two questions and i think you might discover something interesting about religion. one of the big argument trends i see is the connection to the word "religion" and a particular faith. What do you think of when i say the word "religion?" I get the impression a lot of people would say something like "islam" or "christianity" or something like that. That association needs to be shaken up a little. A particular belief is a little portion of "religion" -- it's like a venn diagram where religion is a giant circle and the various faiths are little circles inside the big religion circle. To me (and to many others,) religion should be a synonym with "belief" or more accurately "belief system." Everyone has a system of beliefs, it's part of being human; there's even a part of your brain devoted solely to it. further, i see that "church" and religion are often tied together, and they need to be separated too. In catholicism (and probably a lot of the other faiths, but i don't know for certain) "Church" with a capital letter refers to the faith, while "church" refers to the place where one goes to participate in ceremonies as a community. Church is a culture -- in this culture, there are certain behavioral and physical expectations, just like any other culture. Often, they require going to church with the church. I hope that makes sense... one really needs to think about it more than just face value. so. back to your statement. Religion how you put together a belief system. Faiths (or Churches) are cultures with a common belief system or religion. People attend and make up the "church," which is the people and the space in which ceremonies take place. Some faiths' beliefs pertain to what happens when we die. Some faiths' beliefs include healing. Some people who are members of a certain faith believe that participating in the faith's traditions will return some favorable something to them -- and take comfort in it. As always, the above is what I believe. Your mileage may vary. I've discovered what i've written above by doing exactly what i've asked you to do -- challenge your beliefs. please, (unless i've written something terribly confusingly,) take a good 5-10 minutes to really think about what i've said before responding. I'm not trying to convert you to a faith, i'm just trying to challenge the prejudices and associations certain words invoke in all of us. I realize this is the internet where nothing matters, but just this once use that independent mind of yours to take up my challenge. |
^ will read when i get home. i have to go to work now, though.
