I think I'd say that my favorite book is Animal Farm. George Orwell is another one of those guys that, like Ray said, can write an amazing peice of literature without using overly complex sentences, too large of vocabulary, etc...I realized how amazing of a book when in my english class, we read Animal Farm, and in my history class, we were studying the whole Russian Revolution and what not.
That's a brilliant book indeed. You must love Pink Floyd's "Animals" album then. |
:thumb:
It's probably my favorite album by them. Dogs is such an awesome song. You gotta love a song with 6* solos by Gilmour. :p *It might be 5, but who cares EDIT: Who killed R&M? :( There are like...no new posts. |

Crighton is another good one Jason, as is Grisham...I forgot modern authors heh. I also like Orwell, though I have only read 1984, tis quite good. Other stuff: Ramsey's a whore, Nightfall in middle earth is good though I have not read that book, ANimals is a good album and the cover is my wallpaper...blah.

You know, the novel Jurassic Park is a ****ing AMAZING book.
|
As is Sphere, I never saw the movie, but quite a creepy book.
|
;) Correct.
+ the metal packs
Finally got the packs ehh? Were they worth it? I'm quite a fan of Dean Koonce's books. Really good writing style, and his stories are good too. |
You know, the novel Jurassic Park is a ****ing AMAZING book.
Recommended? I never honestly liked the movie, but I'd give the book a shot. |
I like Orwell, and I also like Hunter S. Thompson.
As for sports-related authors (everyone else rolls their eyes in disgust), Bill James, Ralph Wiley, John Feinstein, and George Plimpton are all great. EDIT: Ha-ha! San Antonio beats Denver in OT. Now they are up three games to one and head back home. They will most likely win the series in five games, just as I called it. How do ya like them apples, Vince? :p On that note I should probably go to bed... |

That was a pretty painless name change.
So, in 12 days I have to revise for two exams and write a 3,000 word Geographical fieldwork thesis. And I am currently posting on MX :-/ I also need to make time to go back through to Edinburgh to pick up a ridiculously cheap Ozric Tenetacles CD which I have previously neglected to buy :-/ |

*points at name* kbai
Excellent. Now I can call you CJS and people will know what I'm talking about.
So, in 12 days I have to revise for two exams and write a 3,000 word Geographical fieldwork thesis. And I am currently posting on MX :-/
I know the feeling. I've got an essay on theoretical philosophy to be handed in tomorrow, and I'm also on MX. Not posting all that much (though that seems to be normal recently), either. I've not even chosen the title to do yet :( Good luck with the CD, though. |
I dislike deadlines, intensely.
And I have a funny feeling that when I go to get the CD it'll be gone. It's amazing how often that hapens. Suicidal Exam Technique: I might actually write a thread. |
I might actually write a thread.
I might actually skim through it. Morning, bitches. NP: Lynyrd Skynyrd-Simple Man I'm going to see them on Thursday, then on Friday I'm driving up to see Manntis. It'll be a good week. |

I heard the Passion of The Christ wasn't as good as the book. :/ |
Anybody catch the new Family guy sunday? It had Passion of the christ 2.
|
Nah, I didn't watch it.

Why am I banned?
Why am I banned?
For making posts such as the one you just made. If you wish to elaborate further, check out the Site section of the forums. There's a thread called "Banning Inquiries". Ask a mod why you were banned in THAT thread. This is not the thread to ask that question. |
I'm zepfan. I was just on checking around, and then I went to class to pick up our last stuff...and now ten minutes later I'm banned...I didn't do anything stupid in the ten minutes I was on...I'm really confused.
EDIT: Nevermind...DFelon banned me because he doesn't like me. Or he doesn't get jokes between friends. Either way. |

Wait...What? Holy crap, dude. I don't know why you might be banned. You'll have to wait until Bartender gets online to ask, I guess... |
Why am I banned?
Don't know why, but it's for two days. Something in Punk/Hardcore? Anyway, I just took my part in the democratic process, which is good. I also returned that CD with no problems at all, which is good. I also got a free sandwich along the way. All of this amounts to me not having done any of essay though. Which is bad. |
Bah, time for brunch. My geometry teacher kicked me out of class for the whole week  I don't know what I did. Seacrest Out.

I didn't break a rule, but DFelon doesn't like me and apparently you can get banned for rules that don't exist. How long is your essay, and what's it about? |
1,000 words, I think, and theoretical philosophy - I haven't managed to choose which specific question I'll do yet :-/
|
Well when's it due? 1000 words isn't that bad... I haven't really done much on my 10 page yet but it's not due until the 10th heh :) In mine I have to design a utopia based on the literature we read in this class.
|
I got a coursework on "The Old Man And The Sea" (Hemingway) today, I have 10 days to do it and it has to be about 1000 words.
|

Sounds like a good topic, that.
Well when's it due? 1000 words isn't that bad...
Tomorrow. My choices are; 1. How does Descartes try to prove that he is not a material thing? Does he succeed? 2. Why does Descartes say that nothing can ever be known perfectly without a knowledge of God? Is it true? 3. Is there any good reason to think there exists a mind-independent material world? |
I'm out of school, the second day in a row... woo, just finished breakfast, Dunkin Donuts is good!

I would answer #2, being the Atheist I am haha. (I don't know the answer to the first part though :-/) |
It has to do with the idea of "clear and distinct ideas", and their relationship to you, and God. Descartes, having proved God elsewhere, says that because God guarantees our understanding, then it is possible for us to have true and lasting knowledge of the world around us, etc. However, because God also gave us free will, it's still possible for us to make mistakes - it's not that his guaranteeing our understanding guarantees that we will always understand things correctly, because our free will can mislead us, but that if we think on something properly, and know enough about it to know it properly, then his guaranteeing our understanding guarantees that what we understand in such a way (clearly and distinctly, hence clear and distinct ideas) is true.
I think I'm going to do the first one, if only because I've just started reading an essay that I can cite as reference if I do the first one. |

Yep. I have the Meditations, and a couple of essays, but that's about it.
On a side-note, I really like Descartes "I think therefore I am". Specifically, I like it when people try to say it doesn't make sense. |

People try to dispute it? I can imagine that would be rather hard, as it's so vague while being meaningful at the same time heh. By the way, congrats on the 19k.
|
Well I was just talking to a friend of mine this morning (who doesn't do philosophy), and he had the idea that the cogito meant something along the lines that Descartes thought that he existed only so long as he was thinking. Once I explained it to him more, I think he got it..he stopped arguing, anyway. That's the bit I like, I suppose.
People like Nietzsche and Hume have tried to dispute it whilst actually understanding it though, and they're harder to argue against, I think. And thanks. |
