could someone explain how stenciling works, i'm curious
You cut out the shape of something on a piece of cardboard or thick paper, then paint the spaces that have been cut out, and the image of the stencil is transferred to whatever you were painting it on.

Matt? 05-22-2006 01:34 PM

ahh so people like print out the pictures and cut them out on cardboard or something?

Like shadow puppets, but using paint and a precisely cut hole instead of light and your hand.

Flagjacket 05-22-2006 02:08 PM

Right, I did it in like 2 seconds, the final will look much better.
Definately a bad call to lend a TAGGER a stencil that you don't want TAGGED all over your neighborhood. Tell him to make his own, it's more punk that way.
Yeah, I just want to see if he will use it like he says he will. I'm really trying to have this kid be on my good side, but it's just so difficult, because he's just such a tool.

ratsinthecity403 05-22-2006 09:45 PM

I take it no one has any ideas of how to sew a Rudimentary Peni picture onto a jacket...
because I'm still kind of lost.
How's the EPs of RP Cd booklet for artwork, anyways?

iam2000pounds 05-22-2006 09:46 PM

justin toxicated 05-22-2006 10:00 PM

stop it. stop it. you act like im famous or something. i'm just a geek with too much time on his hands.

i recently put a counter on the index page of the site, it generates statistical information. one of the stats is a "last page viewed" feature and the seventh most popular click-from address is this forum. at least in the last day anyway.

iam2000pounds 05-22-2006 10:14 PM

Cool. Hi.

300 pages!

justin toxicated 05-22-2006 10:16 PM

hi.

yeah, thats a bit excessive. at this point: someone should just make a new subforum.

Sid 05-22-2006 11:03 PM

Wait, wait, wait, wait.

Unlike Sid, which is completely original and sounds nothing like a well known member of a crappy punk band. :p

Hey i have a question how does one secure the stenicil to fabric in order to spray. Also when do you take the stencil off after spraying.
Hey i have a question how does one secure the stenicil to fabric in order to spray. Also when do you take the stencil off after spraying.
I usually just tape down the corners. You could use a weak adhesive (a gluestick or somehting) or double-sided tape (or just roll the tape).]

And I don't think it really matters too much when you take off the stencil.

Converge#12 05-23-2006 01:33 PM

Okay thanks

AIRIC 05-23-2006 02:01 PM

I was just gonna tell Justin Toxicated to go away but then I realized this wasn't the community thread! :p

Converge#12 05-23-2006 03:59 PM

What spray paint do I use is there special fabric spray paint or can I just use regular?

justin toxicated 05-23-2006 04:35 PM

i recently wrote/posted a new tutorial on how to stencil onto fabric using Freezer Paper. when you use freezer paper, it bonds the stencil to the fabric and there's next to no space between the two so theres little to no over/underspray. thats probably your best bet if you're spraying/rolling the design.

take note: spraypaint on fabric fades quickly and looks crappy.

what if i was making patches and wasnt washing them?

Liebensaft 05-23-2006 05:05 PM

You'd probably be fine then. They make spray fabric paint, and that might work well.

Converge#12 05-23-2006 05:28 PM
You'd probably be fine then. They make spray fabric paint, and that might work well.
where can I purchase that?

justin toxicated 05-23-2006 05:31 PM

craft stores have pump fabric or acrylic paint. the tutorial i wrote uses a foam paint roller and cheap acrylic paint: works great. check it out, its worth a read.

Liebensaft 05-23-2006 05:49 PM
where can I purchase that?
Any kind of craft store might have it. A good start would be Jo-Ann's Fabrics if there's one in your area. I'm pretty sure they're national. You could also try Michael's Craft store, or something else along those lines.

yeah a couple of my shirts are fading. its weird because i have a shirt i sprayed a long time ago before i started doing it all the time and it hasnt faded. i guess it could be the type of shirt or paint but i think im using the same paint. whatever.
