I should get it.
All this Ummagumma discussion makes me fee left out :'( |
Ummagumma isn't my favorite album, but it's not bad. I love the live CD, but I'm not huge on the fragmentation of the studio CD.
Fragmentation? What do you mean? |
Each track/suite on the studio disc is like a solo track by each member
Careful With That Axe, Eugene is probably my favorite Floyd song ever, and the Ummagumma version is my favorite. BTW, which disc is considered "Disc 1"? |
Fragmentation? What do you mean?
Like that guy said, each member has 3 or 4 tracks to themself. So it's an album with four completely different styles and ideas on it, mixed together. The live stuff is considered "disc 1" |
Well yeah I already knew that but to me it flowed alright considering.
|
Maybe I should listen to it again, I might be making an ass of myself.
|
Nah, it is a bit fragmented, but I like it anyways. And besides, Dark Side Of The Moon is fairly fragmented too, when you think about it.
The tape version of Ummagumma is a bit better, because (intentionally or not) there's a sort of "warmness" running through the entire studio part, that links everything together nicely. It's hard to describe, but people who've heard it will know what I mean. |
Either of the soundtrack albums (More and Obscured by Clouds) and the Zabrinski point sessions, Atom Heart Mother, Relics, Ummagumma, the live version of the wall (Is There Anybody Outthere? - I prefer it to the studio take), Music from the Filmore, P.U.L.S.E. gives a nice take on the post Waters Floyd.
The rest is the really completionist stuff. And to be honest, you've got the best ones already (Final Cut, WYWH, Darkside). Edit: beat dammit.
The Zabriskie Point sessions are killer to find, I saw someone pay like more than 100 euro's for the vinyl, but I guess it's worth it for 10 songs almost no one heard ... |
I can upload the Zabriskie point sessions if anyone wants them.
They're ok, mostly for completionists. You can see how some ideas work their way into later work though. There's a piano piece that's the genesis of Us and Them. It was written for the fight/riot scene. Very cool. Have to wait a couple of weeks until I get home from uni though. |

Hmm, I've always thought Darkside was a great example of an album flowing together perfectly. |
I should get it.
All this Ummagumma discussion makes me fee left out :'(
ummagamma isnt eh best, if your not a die hard PF fan then id would even go with saying its not worth the money or time. |
David Gilmour will be on channel 4 like, right now (12:17)
For those of you in the U.K / Ireland |
The live stuff is considered "disc 1"
In that case, I meant the second one is my favorite. |
Awww, but you've got live versions of Careful With The Axe, Eugene and Saucerful Of Secrets!
I love the Narrow Way parts the best of Disc 2. |
Of course, David wrote them :)
Those are probably my favorite bits of Ummagumma also, besides the live stuff. I also enjoy Rick's stuff quite a bit. |
Heh, but Rick was my favourite member of the band. :p
Oh, and as for DSOTM, it jumps from musical idea to musical idea, such as Great Gig In The Sky to Money, and Any Colour You Like to Brain Damage especially. Intense, faster beats, more chaotic, to slower, laid back, rock melodies. Of course, that is part of the concept to me, since it is about madness and death. |
Ya I see what you're saying. I'm actually listening to the album right now. I just love how each song leads into the next, it really does sound like one 45 minute long song.
|
It jumps around, but in terms of making a smooth transition from one style to another (except money, but started off side 2 of the lp) I thought it was very well done.
|
Yeah Ive always noticed that having the original vinyl records divides up the album better. People always talk about differences in Disc 1 and 2 of The Wall but you're probably better off comparing each of the four sides.
Oh and my favourite parts of Ummagumma are probably Syshpus and The Narrow Way too. And strangely enough the small furry animals one has really grown on me. |

Ya exactly. You've gotta remember that CD's didn't exist when Pink Floyd was making music, all of their music was made for vinyl. |
I think far too many bands nowadays fill up an entire CD just for the sake of it. Like they have 45 minutes of good stuff but then in between it all is filler to make the 70 or so on a CD. So yeah, vinyl rocks!! :thumb:
|
God, Dark Side is so good. I haven't listened to this album through in a little while, but I heard "Us & Them" on the radio yesterday and decided to pop it in. It's fantastic.
|
Dark Side of the Moon is so ****ing good.

On another note, the album cover on the live disc of Ummagumma reminds me of the head of Baphomet. cover: http://image.listen.com/img/170x170/4/4/7/5/505744_170x170.jpg baphomet: http://paranormal.se/images/Baphomet.jpg |
That's one hell of a loose connection, but unfortunately thats all some people need to go around calling bands a bunch of Satanists.
|
Hm, well, I certainly wouldn't think "Satanist" myself. It was just what I thought of when I saw it. The symbol is used by satanists now, but it has extensive and unclear history.

You can find used ones that work perfectly fine for 50 bucks, maybe even less. |
The Baphomet symbol, and the pentagram (without the Goat) was actually an alternative to the cross, and widely used throughout Christianity until the time of Constantine the First, I think.
Also, the inverted cross is actually the Cross of St. Peter. :p Hardly a symbol of the devil. |
I heard somewhere when the Christian church was first forming, they were torn between which symbol to use to represent Christianity. The two final options were the Cross and the Pentagram. The Cross obviously won, and the Pentagram eventually became a symbol of evil.
I dont know if that's true, though. |
page turn. ill save someone the misery.
I LOVE HIGH HOPES *splooge* |
Actually the Pentagram is Pagan or Wiccan and is only seen as evil purely because it's not christian.
