Does anyone know anything about Neil Peart's obsession with Ayn Rand? I read a bit about her philosophy (http://www.aynrand.org/site/PageServer?pagename=objectivism_intro), and I have to admit I don't agree with it much. Anyone know anything else about it?

lol what crawled up your guys *** im just trying to get the forum back on topic because it is about rush not coheed

Huber 08-28-2005 01:47 PM

I went to Rush's web site and started reading the news and this was there:
What a relief to be over this terrible ordeal and finally move on to better things. I felt completely violated for months after the incident at the Ritz Carlton in Naples, Florida, on New Year’s Eve 2003, but I was also comforted by the concern from so many Rush fans who wrote or called me, who know me and what sort of person I am, and for their many letters to the press in support of my family and me. I must admit, it was also uplifting to see the surprise from the police and the Ritz Carlton when so many let their outrage be known.

It was difficult to live in silence for 15 months, but now that we are pursuing a measure of accountability from those who beat, Tasered and jailed me without cause, I feel liberated and am ready to begin sharing the horror of that night and the ensuing 475 nights of fear and loathing. I have released a statement to the general press regarding my actions against the Ritz Carlton and the Collier County Sheriff’s Office that can be found on this site, and will hopefully begin to bring some clarity to the issue.

I sincerely want to thank you all for your amazing support. After so many wonderful years together, I am humbled by the depth of concern and affection that Rush fans have had for us through our most difficult times, and will never, ever forget it. Thank you with all my heart.

If all we talked about was Rush this would die pretty fast.
If all we talked about was Rush this would die pretty fast.
Yeah, all threads like this need some kind of off discussion sometimes. C&C wasn't all too far off either because of some prog elements and a song title 2113.

SuperDude2111 08-28-2005 02:05 PM

Rush is awesome. My dad saw 5 of their concerts. And it really makes me want to see one. If you want to see a music video. :D Go to www.videocodezone.com and find Rush.
I went to Rush's web site and started reading the news and this was there:

What's all that about?
Alex Lifeson was drunk at a New Years Party in Naples. His son, also heavily wasted, tried to get onstage with the club's house band and sing a song to his wife, and wouldn't leave when the bouncers tried to take him off, yelling "I'm singing a ****ing song for my wife." The cops tried to arrest him, and Alex went to his son's defense, yelling "It's ****ing New Year's Eve." Then the police tried to arrest Alex too and he got into a fight with the cops, supposedly hitting a female police officer in the face and shoving other cops down the club steps. The cops tasered both Alex and his son repeatedly and locked them up for the night. Charges along the lines of resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace were going to be pressed but apparently it's blown over now.

Huber 08-28-2005 02:41 PM

Locked up for the night? I thought he meant he was locked up like a year and a half or something. That would have been BS.

Cain 08-28-2005 02:44 PM
Locked up for the night? I thought he meant he was locked up like a year and a half or something. That would have been BS.
No, but he was having the threat of maybe a year or two in jail if he was found guilty, and legal proceedings on the issue were continuing until recently. So that's what he meant by "a year and a half of fear and loathing."

YDload 08-28-2005 03:28 PM

Oh that's right, he wasn't on an airplane. That was the guitarist or bassist from REM.

I guess I mixed up my drunken-and-disorderly-conduct musicians.

Huber 08-28-2005 03:43 PM
No, but he was having the threat of maybe a year or two in jail if he was found guilty, and legal proceedings on the issue were continuing until recently. So that's what he meant by "a year and a half of fear and loathing."
Oh, all clear now. Thanks.

Jacaranda 08-28-2005 03:59 PM

Ah ya, thats what it was for I just remember a picture of him and he had blood all over his shirt.

Scooch 08-28-2005 04:43 PM

I know Geddy can get his voice up very high, but does he do all the vocals on "Time Stands Still?"

YouGottaBeCrazy 08-28-2005 04:49 PM
I know Geddy can get his voice up very high, but does he do all the vocals on "Time Stands Still?"
Nah, there's a woman singing with him during one of the parts.

thunderzstruck 08-29-2005 08:07 AM

Can geddy still sing that high anymore live?

Deathtoall99 08-29-2005 08:34 AM

do they even perform that much live?

Im sure he can still hit them... but just not as well
hopefully he'll never become like ozzy who has to use special machines to make his voice carry and sound full

Being old sucks =(

thunderzstruck 08-29-2005 08:53 AM

But geddy will always be a better singer than ozzy

Maggot Dream 08-29-2005 03:15 PM

Geddy can still hit the notes, it's just that his voice is a bit weaker than it used to be. 2112 on Rush in Rio is a good example.

Hep Kat 08-29-2005 03:37 PM

true but rush in rio was still awesome

Hahaha what guy, that makes me like Alex that much more.

marmalade_skies 08-29-2005 06:28 PM

OK, I just started listening to Rush about a month ago, but they're one of my favorite bands already. I picked up their hemispheres cd and a live cd, too. i think it's called different stages.

Anyway, I just need some suggestions on what cd's are good and which ones I shouldn't waste my money on.

Jacaranda 08-29-2005 06:33 PM

Get 2112, right now. Some other good ones are: Permanentt Waves, A Farewell To Kings, and Moving Pictures, those are what I'd get to start out.

But 2112 is their best album IMO.

Distant Echoes 08-29-2005 06:38 PM

The only ones you should buy are Test For Echo and Roll the Bones. Dispite their great singles on each, the albums aren't anything special.

Everybody will probably recommend you stuff from 70s-81 (Moving Pictures was in '81), and really it's your choice. They started as hard rock, sortta AC/DC-ish imo, and then started blending concept albums (or songs) into it, until they eventually became full progressive rock (right about at Permanent Waves '80). After Moving Pictures they have some good ones and bad ones, but they all sound somewhat alike.

I suggest any Rush fan to pick up Vapor Trails. Theres some obvious bad songs, but it has some really good ones too. It's not as progressive, and it's a bit heavier then all their material. I suggest it to my metal friends for their first Rush album and they love it.

marmalade_skies 08-29-2005 06:54 PM

OK. Thanks.

My friend actually burned me a Rush CD a while back, but I never got around to listening to it until just recently. I'm not sure what it's called, but I know it has Tom Sawyer and Dreamline on it. Anybody know what album that is?

Jacaranda 08-29-2005 06:58 PM

Moving Pictures has Tom Sawyer, it could've been like a Greatest Hits?

Distant Echoes 08-29-2005 07:05 PM
OK. Thanks.

Tom Sawyer is one Moving Pictures, and Dreamline is on Roll the Bones. in all probability, it was a greatest hits albums, or a mix he made up. Chronicles is a good greatest hits album, one of the very few i like, and theirs a few others with no need to mention. Both great songs.

And IMO, Id recommend Moving Pictures before anything.

After that, if you want to explore Rush some more (considering you love it), go for 2112. If you arent sure yet, try Permanent Waves.

marmalade_skies 08-29-2005 08:24 PM

Ya, you guys are probably right. Thanks.

At school today my English teacher had...
"Why are we here? Because were here...Roll the bones" Neil Peart "Rush"
...on the board. I thought it was really cool, or the school fatigue just made anything of faint interest cool.

BludgeonySteve 08-29-2005 09:00 PM

Rush lyrics belong in English class :). They're well enough written to pass for poetry.

Maggot Dream 08-29-2005 09:17 PM

Last year in English, we had to do a presentation on the poetic quality of the lyrics of a song. I chose "The Trees," great song, meaningful lyrics too. Although, Peart claims that the lyrics have no meaning whatsoever, supposedly they're based on sort of comic or something.

The trees is about how people will form and fight for equality. He uses tree as a metaphore

*sorry about triple post :-/

BludgeonySteve 08-29-2005 10:18 PM

Almost all of theirs are great :). I'm glad that Peart dropped out of highschool. Canadian highschool would have sucked out all of his creativity.
