I know, i was pretty bummed out...
AHHH Tuesday needs to get here  |
I listened to With Teeth in it's entirety today. And I have to say...i'm not impressed.Just nothing...really stood out. It's definitely more pop-orientated.But if I do compare it to Pretty Hate Machine,I'd say PHM owns it by a mile.Seriously, some one tell me that this rules over The Downwards Spiral and The Fragile.Even Broken wns it.Something just seems missing you know? The Hand That Feeds is pretty good,but..ahh.With Teeth just isn't up to the usual NIN standards.Has Reznor gone stale with sobriety? What is he thinking?!? 'With-ahhh...Teeth-ahhhh..'.That would be a good song if not for that...that thing!I feared this might happen. It's not all that bad,but I was just expecting so much more you know.It could grow on me, but im really sad and dissapointed.
|
ehhh..it's only my opinion,it's not accountable for everyone elses towards the new album. You guys can think what you want to think. Please don't set your expectations too high please though, this coming from an avid NIN fan.
|
And coming from another avid NIN fan (who has only heard it from the release party): it was awesome.
|
i concur. the new record is really great.
its funny because people say "but it's not downward spiral" and trent says in countless interviews that alot of his alchoholism and such resulted from having to live up to himself with TDS, hence the drugged up Fragility tour. Now hes doing what he feels like, it seems. And another potential record within the next year and a half. possibly. |
IEven Broken wns it.Something just seems missing you know? The Hand That Feeds is pretty good,but..ahh.
the fact that you said "The Hand that feeds" is pretty good shows what you know. That's probably the worst track on the album, and is ironically the single the media embraces. It's not as good as Pretty Hate Machine, but this album is still amazing. While the downward spiral was more memorable, this album has no filler, which the downward spiral had. It's very constant, and "you know what you are" is one of the most aggressive tracks they've ever recorded. If anything else, it's better than Broken, and it's better than pretty much anything else released this year, which is why I'm buying it. |
Ok tacos, you're a tr00 fan.
Just because it's a single doesn't mean it's the worst track on the album. It definitely is one of the stand outs. I'm not going to despise it just because apparently the media embraces it though. It's an awesome song.Maybe this does strike some people as an amazing record, but I just don't think it lived up to the hype. I enjoy every single NIN release so much more than this one; I can't just keep telling myself I like it for the fact that it's them.It could be a CD that grows on me. But still those kinds of records strike you on the first listen, and you realise more by listening to it again and again, influenced by that first spin in the cd player. All The Love In The World I have to listen to again, the same with Getting Smaller.I forgot to mention The Line Begins To Blur and Every Day is Exactly the Same, which I heard about a month ago,are also outstanding on the album. There ARE great ideas on this album, but I just think Trent could've utilised his time so much more. And I can't get over his use of the chorus With-ah Teeth-ah. Lyrical dynamics, could be.Writers block definitely.Get the album. I have to listen to it one or two more times, my mind might change....or maybe i'm just ranting because one of my favourite bands has kind of dissapointed me. :upset: |
you are nuts dude. you have to have some ocd if "with-ahh teeth-ahh" is causing yo uso much distress.none the less it is your opinion, but this album blew me away. i got it on friday and have not stopped listening to it since. you mean to tell me that "everyday is exactly the same" doesn;t stand out in your mind? the opening track "all the love in the world" is another great one, as well as the last 5 songs on the album most noteably "sun spots". i think the whole album is great and i felt he utilized th 6 years he took to make it. can;t wait till may 18th.
|
How did you hear Everyday is Exactly the Same a month ago? It leaked april 14th.

ok ok so i bought my copy of with teeth yesterday (god i got a surprise when i went in there and it was on the shelves before the third) I hadnt downloaded any of the album and i turned off the radio when THTF came on because i didnt want to hear any of it before i bought it. At first listen i didnt really think that much of it, its ALOT less layered in my opinion to the previous albums and much simpler (gonna get flamed for that comment) but its really growing on me now. its quite a difficult album and there is nothing really that accessible on it except for THTF. Its much more rock orientated than the fragile but at the same time its gentler than TDS (as for reznor saying the album would be 11ish short sharp punches in the face it is simply unture)
At the moment i am loving right where it belongs (great great song) sunspots, every day is exactly the same and all the love in the world and im disliking the collector and only. Reznors vocals seem to be pretty good but i wish he would get over the 'cat in a hat' rhyming lyrics its much worse here than they have ever been on any of his previous albums. The art work was a bit of a let down too, from what trent was saying on the website i was expecting something elaborate (like the Fantomas new cd  ) but its pretty standard... well youll see what i mean Ill post more if i think of anything |

The popular record store JB HiFi in Australia released it early :) :) :)

I said both of those tracks did stand out. I just don't think it's up to NIN standards,I mean i'm forcing myself to like it. That's never the case with them usually. As I said it could grow on me. But it definitely didn't blow me away straight off and I just usually expect that from Reznor.I had too high expectations. It's much more mellow than usual, yet no 'Something I Can Never Have','Hurt' or 'And All That Could've Been' type songs which are some of Trent's best.Maybe he just wanted change, I can deal with that. Sorry for ranting, this is just nearly as bad as Tool having a bad release or something. Because with the two bands, none have had previous albums that have failed to impress me. BUT I really think I can come to appreciate this release with further listens. :thumb: |
It's much more mellow than usual, yet no 'Something I Can Never Have','Hurt' or 'And All That Could've Been' type songs which are some of Trent's best.
haha thats for sure nothing like the Great Below or the day the world went away and i was quite disappointed that there was no instrumental tracks this album like just like you imagined. Its definitely a much different album but thats ok cuz i dont want the same thing thats been done before |
OK I've just listened to With Teeth once more on myspace.com,in it's entirety, and while not being a majorly mind-blowing and constantly impressive release, it definitely has a few memorable moments I have realised.
I still find 'The Hand That Feeds' to be the most enjoyable out of these rather 'newly styled' songs. Not because it's "the single that the media embraces" or what ever. There is a significant change in this batch of tracks, most notably the drumming, as it is no longer more drum machined and techno-ish (using the term lightly), but Dave Grohl. And I don't think I am used to this. I have come to love NIN for this type of style, and even though it still has this same kind of drumming in some selected songs, I would think a song like 'Getting Smaller' would be better with out the more rock-feel drums. It has the potential to be something like a modern-day 'Wish', but I don't know. Pretty stupid pointing out something like that and I probably haven't explained it thoroughly enough to back it up, but I still think something just isn't completely there..most people will be buying the album tomorrow, so here is my review. Yellow - Best Track Red - Stand Out Dark Red - Normal Blue - Nothing Great All The Love In The World is a great quiet track to start off the album, and the melody is definitely a memorable one. It is one of the highlights of the album and a great opener. You Know What You Are has a drumming intro from Dave and Trent is the most relentless on the album, yet I feel somehow I've heard it all before. Still, on this album, it is another great song. I kind of feel the agressiveness is lacking, maybe Trent didn't want to do that with this album, and even when he does go hard it's not up to say, 'Happiness in Slavery' or 'Star****ers Inc' standards of angry. Still, its a good track. The Collector is nothing too great and didn't really stand out in my opinion. Has quite a good chorus but I don't dig his voice or the lyrics on the track. Only IMO though. The Hand That Feeds This is actually a really enjoyable, fun track. I don't give a shit if this is the single, I don't like it just because of that. It's catchy, got a great hook, the solo thing is awesome and even though it might not represent this album that great, it's definitely one of the best tracks on the album and shouldn't be despised just because it's a single. I hate idiots that even think that. Love Is Not Enough Not quite a standout, but still a thoroughly good track.Nothing wrong with it, but nothing overly great about it either. Every Day Is Exactly The Same is probably the best track on the album. Reminds me of Fragile-era NIN, and sums the new album up pretty nicely. The chorus is really simple but great at the same time. A good quiet track which can probably be best compared to the song 'Where Is Everybody?' yet a bit mellower. It's a very good track, but if put on 'The Fragile' wouldn't be much compared to others. With Teeth is of course, the title track. The instrumentals are very good, and everything besides that..chorus is fine. The quiet bridge then BAM straight into full blast guitars is very vintage NIN. Still don't like that chorus-aahhh though. Only is very 80's, it sounds even sarcastic in some senses. The words being rambled a la Down In It work alright, but I can't see throught the cheesey instrumentals. One to miss, even if it might be done like this on purpous. Peoples tastes vary though. Getting Smaller Another agressive track, yet this sounds like its Trent featuring in another band. The instruments just sound totally foreign, but yet again if you're not a little bitch who can't get over something dumb like this..ahem..then there is nothing wrong with this song. It's good, and will grow on me. Sunspots I love this song now. Just something menacing about it, yet hauntily beautiful. The chorus is enjoyable too. Don't skip it, it's very different to anything NIN has done, but that's a good thing. The Line Begins To Blur Definitely reminds me of NIN of old. Downloaded this song along with 'The Hand That Feeds'. Reminds me of the song 'The Big Come Down' or something along the lines of that. It rivals EDIETS as the best song on the album. Beside You In Time This goes on..and on..and on..No, actually it's a really beautiful track and the end bit's a really great NIN moment and makes the transition to the last track nicely. Right Where It Belongs A great closing track, very quiet. I was really hoping for a big build up or at least some kind of increase in instruments, but mostly stays exactly the same level.Great lyrics and the piano melody is nice. You actually think it's going to explode into something extaordinary, but instead some samples of crowds cheering is played behind the piano melody and Reznor singing. A very quiet way to finish an unexpected album of neither overly great or really bad songs, just a consistent outing of strong ones that could've had a few touch ups or minor changes. This is really a change for the band, Trent is sober and feeling great now. His voice changed a bit on this album, as is the case usually once you are clean. I really hope NIN comes to New Zealand, as I am still a bigger fan as I ever was, now they have a stronger body of material and I am already eagerly awaiting their arrival. I expect most casual fans to praise the album, and the hard out NIN fans to either despise it or completely fall in love with it. I fall somewhere in the middle, as I have grown to appreciate what it is and feel it is a great 13 songs, yet this is probably the weakest release from them. It doesn't mean it is that bad. I will simply wait till the price lowers as NZ prices them $34.95. . Not as influential as Pretty Hate Machine, not as aggressive and memorable as Downwards Spiral, not as ingenius as both discs of The Fragile, but still a strong release. With Teeth. It's been 6 years. Buy It. |
disc world also release the album early...but at this point it is pointless to do so.
|
Still is back in print! For ten bucks!

Still is Nin's best album.
|
TOMORROW AWETROAHWERAW WTF
I pre-ordered the album about a week ago, along with a With Teeth shirt. I'm looking forward to getting it. |
Still is back in print! For ten bucks!
http://www.nin.com/current/index.html
That's pretty sweet, although they really burn you on the shipping. It comes to nearly 15 bucks with shipping, which pretty much sucks. /Agrees with Kaden. |
I'm all caught up in the excitement of hearing a new NIN album in its entirety tomorrow and I was doing some googling and I came across this site, I dunno if it's been talked about here yet but I couldn't find any threads about it.
http://www.pages.drexel.edu/~dph342/thtf/001-100.html It's page with like 300+ remixes of the Hand That Feeds...this is definetely gonna fill some time out of the day tonight, it's interesting to see how many twists people can add to the song, even though a lot of it is just people mixing up the song and not really editting the actualy sounds of it, some people have been really creative with it. It'd be cool if there were remixes of other songs too but I still think this is a fun site. |
ive listened to teh whole album b4 it came out and i dont like some songs where the singing is rele low
|
I posted a link to still like three pages back, its been in print for a while.
It was released Sunday in Australia btw. |
Only is a BRILLIANT track. It's the bastard offspring of Closer and Down In It. I can't believe people don't dig it as much as I do.
You folks have to remember where Trent comes from: Synth pop. And the track is brilliant. |
One more day...

I think that the collector is probably the weakest song on the album, it does little for me and reminds me alot of big man with a big gun. Right Where It Belongs my favourite thus far its so simple yet amazingly powerful when the cheers of the crowd come in. Yep i cant get over the with teeth chorus it sounds very nasty and i totally agree with your view on THTF its a very catchy rocking song. Oh yeah RWIB isnt the last song on the album there is a song called Home which comes after it, I rate it pretty highly, slow going, big drum beat and trents tourtured lyrics with some nice keyboards coming in at the chorus |
So, upon reading portions of this thread I'm getting that With Teeth is not quite up there with their best work, but it's still going to be worth my AU$27? correct?
|
^^Yeah like cogs album (haha remember me?? lol) it takes awhile to grow on you and you probably wont ever love every single track on the cd but its well worth it in my opinion :thumb:
|
Just got back from the "With Teeth" release party. I finally have the album in my hands...after so long. I'm listening to it right now as I type. The release party was pretty good. We got some free TDS posters as well as "With Teeth" posters. We also got some stickers and some other stuff. Anyway, they showed us a collection of NIN videos including one from Reznor's very first band doing a cover of Billy Idol's "Eyes Without a Face". Heh. That was interesting. They also screened the whole story behind the video for "Down In It" where the FBI thought it was an actual murder case. It's a rather longs story so if anyone is interested check it out here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Down_in_It
Anyway, still listening to the album and so far so good. |
