The Beatles were about sounding good. Not making song that are really hard to play.

xxxRoCkJuNkiExxx 12-14-2004 06:29 PM

I don't have anything of Harrison's post-Beatles stuff yet... :upset:

well I have one 45...My Sweet Lord/Isn't It a Pity

xxxRoCkJuNkiExxx 12-14-2004 06:32 PM

and for the argument before....Lennon and McCartney were both very talented vocalists

Im gonna be one of those who burns his records and call him unsafe for children.

DeusExMachina 12-15-2004 02:07 PM

Ignorant people are funny. I wish they could at least back up their opinions. If they don't like The Beatles, I'll live, but intelligence isn't too much to ask for, is it?

Woodstock 12-15-2004 04:52 PM
Lets move on to a friendlier topic. Does anyone have Harrison Live in Bangladesh? Is it any good? I have his Live In Japan CD, and its really amazing.
Is that the Concert for Bangladesh? If it is, I would really like to have that on CD. I heard it was a great concert, Harrison+Clapton always equals a great listen.

clown_phobia 12-15-2004 04:59 PM

did you know that eric clapton married george harrison's ex-wife! interesting!

I really like the beatles, they have so many good songs and albums! :thumb:

Yep, Patti Boyd. Both the songs Something and Layla were written for her

clown_phobia 12-15-2004 05:10 PM

really? that's interesting. Both are great songs! There is not a single beatles song I dont' like.

Did you know that paul's mother mary came to him in a dream and said he should "let it be". That was paul's inspiration to loosen his creative control over the Beatles and also the write the song Let it Be.

BludgeonySteve 12-15-2004 05:29 PM

Nice :thumb:. There's a story behind almost every Beatles song (past their pop era).

Are you sure? I always thought it was the Virgin Mary.

Did you know that the song "Carry That Weight" was written about Paul's heavy "weight" to keep the band together at the time of the recording?

Walrus Gumboot 12-15-2004 05:53 PM

I always thought "Boy You're Gonna KERRY That Weight" should have been a campain slogan for Kerry/Edwards, maybe they would have won

That reminds me, did anyone read a little bit of something in the rolling stone a few months ago that said "If John Lennon rose from the grave and had a pro-Bush rally in central park, NY would still vote democrat"?
...it made me giggle

Woodstock 12-15-2004 06:33 PM

If any political figure got hold of a Beatles song, I would be so pissed. It's bad enough that Nike got Revolution. Stupid Michael Jackson.

Walrus Gumboot 12-15-2004 07:00 PM

Eww they did?
I think John Lennon wrote "Come Together" for some random California politition's campaign

I don't think it would be as bad if they just said the words instead of playing the song
I personally hate it when they use nice songs for commercials, and somebody who hasn't heard them before will always come up with the image of the advetizement in their head when they hear the song.. I mean come on, imagine hearing "across the universe" for the first time on a digital camera ad (isn't it funny how they never say "jai guru deva?") or thinking of Coca-Cola every time you hear Queen's "Breakfree" (if that was the first time you heard it), it's like the song is permanantly ruined
:sad face:

George met Patti because she was in Ahard Days Night

eghed 12-15-2004 07:27 PM
Okay, lets not assume anything. That guy has only had one post, and he never mentioned anything about metal or Lars Ulrich. Ringo was not an amazing drummer, he was average at best. He could have been way more interesting, but he played some pretty boring stuff.
Ringo was a good drummer not great but good. He didn't do anything amazing but he was always there to keep it together. If you ever here them doing a fast and early version of Get Back with John singing lead vocals, John screws up but Ringo covers it up with a great fill. :)

Walrus Gumboot 12-15-2004 07:39 PM

agh is this what happens anytime some 1x poster comes in and says they don't like the beatles? let's ignore them next time

DeusExMachina 12-15-2004 07:55 PM

Across The Universe was in a digital camera ad...? *mouth foams* I will destroy that digital camera. And everyone involved in making the ad. And their families. And all their families friends. Just to get the message across.

OT: NYC is surprisingly conservative.

Walrus Gumboot 12-15-2004 09:08 PM

by "surprisingly conservative" do you mean like "wow, I think 40% of the population might be conservative?"

Yes, DeusExMachina, it was TERRIBLE. So bad. The guy singing it had a really whiney voice and it was all... GAH! I was speechless for about 2 minutes. How could they turn that into a whiney 1/2 cover for the purpose of promoting cheap plastic crap? oh! :faints:

Woodstock 12-16-2004 02:19 PM

I hate classic songs ruined in commercials. I heard Purple Haze played on a commercial for that Sirius satellite radio thing. I was pissed.

I liked when it was used in the Pepsi commercial. I remember a few years ago when Beatles songs were used for alot of commercials

Almost every good Doobie Brothers song has been killed by commercials, same withe Steve Miller, especially Fly Like an Eagle.
Eww they did?

yeah that's true, but come together was also about a man and woman reaching orgasm together during sex, if you listen you can see it, I mean "come together right now over me" is kind of straight forward. anyway typical john lennon to throw in a double-meaning in the lyrics. That was one of the best things about the Beatles - the double meanings. A lot of sexual jokes too, look at happiness is a warm gun for example. Also in "Girl" when they sing "She's the kind of girl who..." you can hear them singing "tit tit tit tit" in the backround. Anyways besides that, I've got a question - What do you prefer, the early screamers like "I Saw Her Standing There", the acid influenced songs like "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" or "A Day in the Life" or the late, mature sound of "Let It Be" and "Here Comes the Sun"? Post your thoughts.

Jaded 12-16-2004 03:17 PM

Acid songs for sure.

DeusExMachina 12-16-2004 03:22 PM

Tough to decide. I like the acid songs and the mature songs equally. Although Abbey Road is my favorite album of theirs, if thats an indication at all.

gmoneyguy 12-16-2004 03:41 PM

I really love them, but Psychadelic has the slight edge.

Woodstock 12-16-2004 04:13 PM

Abbey Road and The White Album are my all time favorites.

gmoneyguy 12-16-2004 04:46 PM

I love MMT and Revolver.

DeusExMachina 12-16-2004 05:39 PM

All the albums are amazing.

Seafroggys 12-16-2004 06:35 PM

I like the more mature stuff of White Album and Abbey Road, though there are sweet badass songs from all eras.

DeusExMachina 12-16-2004 06:37 PM

Definitely. I love the last half of Abbey Road, its like just one big song that flows beautifully. I am convinced that Roger Waters was listening to the Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight transition when he wrote Vera/Bring The Boys Back Home. Abbey Road seems to me to have been a big musical influence on The Wall.

Metafive 12-16-2004 06:58 PM

I dont know if you guys like Maroon 5 or not, I personally don't really like them, but I read in a magazine they recorded a live cover of "If I Fell" so I downloaded it, anyone who likes the Beatles should, it's pretty good. He slows it down, and takes away the early sound of the original recording, it's just the classic voice and acoustic guitar live performance. Listening to this version really makes me notice how nice a song it was, but anyways download it, it's different, if you like it great, if you don't oh well. But it is definately hard to cover a Beatles song and make any improvement on it, so they did a good job keeping that in mind, but if you guys know any half decent covers let me know.

Metafive 12-16-2004 07:01 PM

sorry to double post but I just heard that Paul McCartney is performing "Freedom" at this year's superbowl during the half-time show

DeusExMachina 12-16-2004 07:17 PM

I have an amazing cover of A Little Help From my Friends, don't remember who it's by, I'll find out. Also, Eva Cassidy does Imagine amazingly. Not technically Beatles, but whatev.

Illmatic 12-16-2004 07:26 PM

The most famous cover of "With a Little Help From My Friends" is by Joe Cocker, so that may be the version you have.
