Also, closer has bad lyrics.

I like the album, theres only two songs i really dont care for. Getting Smaller and Beside you in time.
Wow... I LOVE Closer's lyrics. They're one of my favorite on the album...
TDS was a ****ing concept album dumbass, get your facts straight.
I never thought of it as a concept album until I heard about it from Kage and some of the other people. Then everything made ALOT more sense.

12Rounds 04-15-2005 09:23 PM

Its hated by pretty well every serious NIN fan.

Magicaltroll 04-15-2005 09:25 PM

I'm actually pretty sure that a few people on here like Closer.

Why don't you like it?

Fu(kin' relax, dude. I think everyone is entitled to interpret any d'amn song which ever way they want. Besides, part of that was taken from an interview:

".....The record was nearing completion. I had written those lyrics pretty quickly and I didn't know if I was going to use them or not. To me, Downward Spiral builds to a certain degree of madness, then it changes. That would be the last stage of delirium. So the original point of "Big Man With a Gun" was madness. But it was also making fun of the whole misogynistic, gangsta-rap bull****." --Trent R.

Magicaltroll 04-15-2005 09:34 PM
But it was also making fun of the whole misogynistic, gangsta-rap bull****." --Trent R.
OHHH BUUUURRRRNNN!!! OHHHHH AWW MAN!!! OMG!!!
jk, But yeah, I think anyone can interpret a song anyway they want to. A song can have more than one meaning.

rising_power 04-15-2005 09:43 PM

I got Pretty Hate Machine a while ago and think it's amazing. would anyone suggest what i should get next?

12Rounds 04-15-2005 09:45 PM

meh, we all know reznors a coke fiend, he was probably ripped out of his mind during that interview.

12Rounds 04-15-2005 09:46 PM
But it was also making fun of the whole misogynistic, gangsta-rap bull****."
And also I usually dont consider a song thats meant to mock people to be good lyrics.

Magicaltroll 04-15-2005 09:48 PM

Why don't you like Closer though?
(to 12 rounds or anyone that doesn't like that song)

12Rounds 04-15-2005 09:58 PM

Well I worded that bad, its not that I hate it, its that everybody likes it despite it being one of the lesser songs on the CD.

The only songs I probably truely hate are Star****ers Inc and Deep

I like Star****ers when its live on AATCHB, its pretty cool I think. But the CD version isn't that great to me.

12Rounds 04-15-2005 10:04 PM

It sohuldnt have been on TF imo, just didnt go with the CD, its good the first time, but after that I didnt care for it. The lyrics are predictable and it sounds like a manson song, maybe on purpose? who knows but reznor.

12Rounds 04-15-2005 10:29 PM

For closer id describe it as overplayed and overrated.

Mabelobe 04-15-2005 10:38 PM
For closer id describe it as overplayed and overrated.
You need to listen to ALL the layers of closer again..its hard to really get into it because it IS and has ALWAYS been overplayed...but if you take it for what it is and really listen to how many tracks are there and how everything works together it really is a masterpiece...

Pale-Folklore 04-15-2005 10:59 PM

well, about closer, i think its a good song, but not quite as good as some of the other stuff on TDS.

Magicaltroll 04-15-2005 11:15 PM

Man, I just love the lyrics on Closer though (not for the same reason as all the other non NIN fans like it though..if yuo know what I mean)
And the song itself is jsut great, I can't really describe why I like it so much... But I don't think it is my favorite song on TDS, I'd give that one to I Do Not Want This.

Mabelobe 04-16-2005 12:59 PM
I can see that. But people here have heard it before it was on the radio, so they maybe don't see it like that. Sure, it gets radio play, but that doesn't mean it's crappy.
Indeed. And the lyrics are amazing on it as well....

I do not want this was probably my LEAST favorite on TDS but now it is really growing on me, (after 10 years heh) i love the verse piano riff.

Ruiner is by far my favorite tho....simply amazing...but then there is Eraser....ahhhh i cant decide....

misunderstood 04-16-2005 02:08 PM

It's rather hard to pick one particular song off of TDS. I think every song has been my favorite at one point or another. Right now I'd have to go with The Becoming..or Ruiner. Grr. No, I can't pick.

Dried Muffin Remnants 04-16-2005 02:10 PM

I've always enjoyed March of the Pigs, it's so strange and it's meaning is very interesting. I believe it's about the Manson's followers. (the pigs)

At first, I thought it was a reference to Animal Farm.

misunderstood 04-16-2005 02:21 PM

^^ Thats very interesting. I had also heard somewhere that the song did have something to do with that (Manson's followers). But I also read this a couple days ago:

interviewer: can you tell me who the pigs are?

trent reznor: uhh, it kind of depends which song you're talking about. but, it could be anywhere from...well, for example in march of the pigs... i'm referring mainly to..anywhere from the media to people who i thought were friends that are around me to the kind of.... the issue i think i was addressing was the feeling we got when in america when we attain a certain level of success and it surprises us to see all the legions of people around you who start ****ing with you and um can't wait to see you fail, waiting for you to **** up, ripping you off, trying to use you...the fact that american media in the underground world, you're their darlings, to oops we accidentally start selling some records, and "we have to turn our backs on you" because we're not cool anymore because people know about us now.

interviewer: right, is that "take the skin and peel it back/doesn't it make you feel better," is that what that line's about?

trent reznor: right.

Either way...I like that song alot too.

Kage 04-16-2005 02:22 PM

Ruiner is my all time favorite song from TDS. At first it was my least favorite, but it grew on me so much and now it's my favorite. I think I've talked about why quite extensively further back in this thread.

And March of the Pigs does indeed seem to have some kind of reference point dealing with Animal Farm. It definately uses some of the same imagery to deliver a similar message.

I'm a VERY serious NIN fan and I love Closer. I don't know where (not sure who said it) got the idea that most serious NIN fans hate that song. Sure, it's overplayed but the end build up is insanely good. It showcases some of the best electronic work from Reznor yet. There are so many different layers and elements that come together there. Same goes for most of NIN songs, though.

Magicaltroll 04-16-2005 02:24 PM

I like March Of The Pigs alot also.
But my favorite song off of TDS for a long time was The Becoming.

Kage 04-16-2005 02:30 PM

"Downward Spiral builds to a certain degree of madness and then changes"
[In reference to Big Man With a Gun]

That's an interesting quote, because I had never read it before, but it's exactly what I've always talked about in my view of the concept of the album. I think there are two major shifts in the album...one after Closer and one after Big Man With A Gun.

Kaden 04-16-2005 03:11 PM

I love Closer, and I also love the lyrics. At first it seems like a mindless lust song, but then I realized it's actually more like a cynical dark love song. I love it.

misunderstood 04-16-2005 03:15 PM

I like Closer as well. I always thought it was actually one of those fan favorites. It's one of those songs that get an extremely loud reaction every time it's played at a show.

Elz`Guitar` 04-16-2005 03:16 PM

An update on my feelings of the new NIN record. I'm coming around to really like it. It appeals to me quite a bit now. After a few sessions and a lot of pot smoke later, I find myself having listened to it all weekend and it sure as hell has grown on me. I like 6 of the songs quite a bit now, and the others are still growing on me. I'm coming around to see what Trent was trying to do here. Still not sure if he made it but it does look like he came close.

Magicaltroll 04-16-2005 03:18 PM

See? I knew I wasn't the only one that loved Closer

The_Shredder 04-16-2005 03:19 PM

Closer in 5.1 > God.

Magicaltroll 04-16-2005 03:22 PM
Closer in 5.1 > God.
Man, I have to get the re-released version of that album. But I can hardly listen to anything with the surround sound :( Because its in the living room and my mom freaks out when I listen to music out there...

12Rounds 04-16-2005 09:52 PM

It's spectacular in 5.1, cant wair for more of them to come out.

So "Only" is gonna be the next single, thoughts? I think its a spectacular song, but I dunno, it seems an odd choice.
