You have to wait until it is released officially. Just dib it a couple of weeks before it comes out and write the review after the album comes out?

How is it?
It's brilliant. No Deloused, but it is certainly impressive. 5 tracks, 88 minutes...

honkybrewster 01-03-2005 07:36 AM

I just did my first CD review, on Hell Yeah! by the Horrorpops.

Kif, I effing love your avatar.
Bartender, about the Hall Of Fame, you've got me down at 13 but I should have 15, not sure which ones you've missed (I do have one review-within-review) but if you could update it that would be just splendid :)
My list for your reviews is;

Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill
Blur - Think Tank

t.a.t.u - 200 km/h in the Wrong Lane
The Zutons - Who Killed the Zutons?
Plus one review within a review.

You're trusted, so I've updated you to 15, but if you could tell me which are missing so I can update my text document list, I'd be thankful.

Med/Iai/anyone else interested - no problem with concert reviews, so long as as much effort is put into them as would be put into a CD review.

Bartender 01-03-2005 10:16 AM

Okay, after 6 months of relative peace, the character limit in the List is becoming a problem again. So far I've done okay in handling it, by moving the 1-9 reviews to the last post instead of the first, streamlining links, not adding my latest reviews to the List, and just being lucky in shifting reviews up and down to find room.

Hopefully it won't matter soon anyway, because of the new format mx is working on, but ideas on how to reduce the characters in posts (without doing a full overhaul, please) would be appreciated. One big problem is the Rolling Stone colour code, as the character limit counts tags toward itself, so for example;

Alanis Morissette
Jagged Little Pill

is not just 32 characters, but 138 (with a streamlined link), and so the posts race towards 10,000 characters much more quickly. At the least it'd be helpful to change the colour to something slightly less lengthy (darkorange is a prohibitive 10; "red" or looks tempting), or maybe something else entirely to denote Rolling Stone reviews. Not sure what though, so, any ideas?

Iai 01-03-2005 10:59 AM

What would it entail to change things around so that character limits just wouldn't be a problem? Making a new post and shifting everything sideways a bit?

You're missing Placebo - Black Market Music - http://musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=258804

I'm also a complete idiot that can't count, and I've just realised that actually the right number would be 14. So sorry for being a pain :(

Iai 01-03-2005 11:08 AM
Doing it in red definitely sounds like a good idea...failing that, could you put links to Rolling Stone 500 albums in bold or something?

[ /B], only done properly, I think I'm right in saying takes up less characters than any colour.
I was thinking that - but the names are in bold, so it'd look confusing. And italics may be a little too subtle.
What would it entail to change things around so that character limits just wouldn't be a problem? Making a new post and shifting everything sideways a bit?
Something like that. The last one took six hours, although at the time I was simultaneously alphabetising it and adding some three or four months of un-added reviews. I'd still rather avoid it.

Yeah, I thought that, and came up with the same possible problems as Iai. Bold is looking tempting though.

Not a problem, I'd rather have a little extra work to do and have it all correct, than not. I'll go fix it in a minute.

EDIT: to the middle point - or asterisks either side of the link, or something.

Dancin' Man 01-03-2005 11:17 AM
Has anyone called dibs for Mars Volta-Frances the Mute? I have an advanced copy (thanks to Soulseek) and would like to do the review.
No.

Unless you are Pixiesfanyo, which I can't remember, you probably won't get it. He's been wanting that review for a very long time and will probably dibs it on the release day.

Iai 01-03-2005 11:17 AM

I like the asterisks.

Haha......I got your Med57 quote confused and thought it said Ned.....

Dancin' Man 01-03-2005 11:25 AM

I haven't listened to the leak yet. I want to wait until I can get the real thing. There's just something about hearing the whole thing with the ideal quality in the correct order all at once that appeals to me.

Kif 01-03-2005 11:27 AM

I'll buy it when it comes out, but I still got the leak. I wonder if they made it 88 minutes just so it was harder to burn to CD-R? Oh well, it's on the good ol' Zen

Iai 01-03-2005 11:28 AM
You seem to be asking for an e-slap.
You really should have changed your name to 30743262. Or whatever the mod's name is, with a '2' on the end. :)

It won't be 88 minutes. It's impossible to get that much music on to an audio CD. It's either a double CD, or they'll edit it before the release.

Best suggestion ever.

Bartender 01-03-2005 12:00 PM

I've done the first post with RS albums in asterisks. Let me know what you think. More asterisks, should I try bold, etc.

Also (credit to The Ashtray Girl for this), about streamlining links, does anyone know if there's any difference, in hyperlinking like this between starting links;

http://www.musici.. (what they are at the moment)
http://musici..
www.musici..

If either of the second two could be used without disadvantage, it would help quite a bit. I'll investigate myself if no one knows, but I thought I might as well ask, see if I can be saved the trouble.

/lazy.

Iai 01-03-2005 12:04 PM

Getting rid of the HTTP is a BAD idea. The second one should work though.

Kif 01-03-2005 12:06 PM

If you put www.blahblahblah, it should automatically put the HTTP in when you click it

Bartender 01-03-2005 12:06 PM

I'll try out a few different ways on the first post, then. What about the asterisks?

Iai 01-03-2005 12:08 PM

Tell you what Bartender - would it be easier if another thread was made just for the Top 500 Albums? Get rid of all the indication of them on the main list, and include a link at the bottom to this new thread. That thread could then just have the Top 500 copied over from the current Can All 500 Be Reviewed thread, with links to the reviews, and the names of the albums that have yet to be done, without links.

I'll make the thread for you if you want.

Iai 01-03-2005 12:09 PM
If you put www.blahblahblah, it should automatically put the HTTP in when you click it
Depending on people's browsers, browser configurations, and what ISP they use, it might not. It's either bring up nothing, or bring up a search page. I still say it's a bad idea, because there will be people it doesn't work for.

Yeah, that could/should work. Closed or not, do you think?
Yeah, that could/should work. Closed or not, do you think?
Closed, I'd say. With a link to YDLoad's thread.

Bartender 01-03-2005 01:04 PM

Good, I'd say closed too, but that means you can't edit it yourself. So you can make it if you want, but there's no specific advantage to it, and I'll make it later tonight (I'm just off to eat and watch a film now).

Iai 01-03-2005 01:16 PM

I'll do it. I always feel bad about the amount of work you have to do on here.

Zappa 01-03-2005 03:05 PM

I will also dib "Electric Warrior" by T. Rex, but I may not get a chance to do it. I'm just digging this record a lot lately, and noticed it's on the top 500 list we're aspiring to review.
I'll do it. I always feel bad about the amount of work you have to do on here.
Heh, thanks. Let me know when you're about to post it, so I can close it.

Iai 01-03-2005 03:33 PM

I'm about to post it. :)

I figured it best to do it over 5 posts. #1-#100, #101-#200, etc.

I narrowly managed to edit you in before Tender closed it. :)
