Vehemence - Darkness is Comfort - 3:35
Starts straight off with a technical death metal riff, and pretty cool barked vocals, which soon switch to much deeper, Nile-esque growls. Very nice so far. The vocals switch from one to the other in what I assume are the verses. Riff changes around 0:55 for what might be a bridge or a chorus. Despite being fairly low and growled, the vocals are surprisingly well-articulated, and I can make out a suprising number of words. The drumming is good as well, pretty much constant double bass, and some great rolls. Vocals stop around 2:20 for a while, but nothing spectacular happens musically. The vocals are almost black metal-ish around 2:48, very high, almost screeched, though still mixed with that lower growl. Oh, and it just fades out there. Well it was all very well and good, but overall it was disappointing. There was no solo, or even an impressive change of riff or rhythm to give the song a point. Solid, but not spectacular. I liked the drumming though. 7/10 Would I listen to more of the same band? Yeah, probably, but they're not at the top of my list after this. Songs: Arghoslent - The Purging Fires of War (melodic death metal) Mannhai - Spender (stoner rock) Ben Harper - When it's Good (blues/jam) Blues Traveler - Optimistic Thought (blues/rock) Winds - What is Beauty? (symphonic metal, plenty of strings) Immolation - Those Left Behind (technical/brutal death metal) Kalmah - Heros to Us (CoB-esque metal) Pestilence - Twisted Truth (technical death) Thirst - State of High Piss Off (surprisingly enjoyable hard rock) All available from me via Soulseek or MSN. |

Winds - What is Beauty?
Like Bartender said, loads of strings, violins and cellos make up the intro, very beautiful stuff. Some spoken words now, after that, the metal comes in, pretty slow, with good double bass, and some excellent guitar soloing, do I hear sweep picking in there? Totally awesome. Some power metally vocals come in, but aren't as high as they usually are. A cool piano fill bit, with some strings. I like the guitars, nice and heavy. There is a slow bit now, a guy with a scratchy voice over melancholy violins. Then a tricky beat, over more vocals. After that, more excellent things being done on the guitar, kind of soloish, but not really. After more vocals, another solo, which is again excellent. A great song. Who's the guitarist? He is a freak. 9/10. I will be checking out this genre, hopefully soon. ----- Coroner - Suicide Command (Tech. Thrash) Cynic - Veil of Maya (Jazz/Death metal) At the Gates - Blinded By Fear (Thrash/Death) All in my soulseek folder called 'Forced Listening' my username is manuscriptreplica. |

At the Gates - Blinded By Fear
3:11 Starts out silence and then some techno comes in at around 19 seconds Then at 39 seconds in everything comes in, it's a pretty catchy riff and the drummer puts a solid beat in their. Then the riff changes at 55 seconds to a heavier "headbanging" riff. After that the vocals come in. Their not bad and I can stand the screaming. 1:18 in the drummer starts running on his double bass pedal to give the song overall better quality IMO. It goes back into the main riff with the vocalist still screaming, which isn't bad. 1:50 the drummer once again pounds on his double and guitar is smoother and I like the pitch of his guitar. 1:58 the vocalist stops and it is just the instruments playing, this continues for a while. 2:13 a guitar solo comes out, it's pretty good, it's not that long either Everything soon goes back to the main riff with the vocalist Then at the end of the song, everything stops and there is a few seconds of silence This is a solid song so 7/10, and I will probably check out more songs from this artist. They have potential. One of those songs you just have to hear. -------------------------------------------------------------- Coal Chamber - Clock (Grungy, heavy metal) Superjoint Ritual - Fuck Your Enemy (Sludge, Heavy Metal) Exodus - Bonded By Blood (Speed, Thrash Metal) |
15 seconds in the drummer starts to do a really really fast punk riff, but it's so fast it's not punk
Coal Chamber - Clocks
Cool sound for the intro A scream comes in. Heavily distorted. The guitars are coming in now. It's pretty simple but not bad. I wish the singer would take the distortion off. The guitar riff beasically sucks. It is a really driving song. There's kind of a chorus where it all slows down a little. it's not bad. After that it speeds up. I like this part. Reminds me of Tool... sort of. I like the clicking echo-ey sound in the backround. The vocals remind me of Slipknot now. Actually, the whole song reminds me of Slipknot. The ending is awesome with the voice recording. The guitarist seemed to be just a second drummer most of the time. It was overall pretty bland. Nothing really jumped out except for the sample at the end and the sound in the begninning. I would've dropped this into nu-metal instead of grungy, heavy metal. 3/10 In Flames - Evil in a Closet (melodic metal) Chevelle - The Red (Personal favorite nu-metal, worth a listen) |

Chevelle - The Red
Chevelle - The Red
Starts with a slow riff, after a while the vocals enter, nothing special, vocals you would hear thirteen times in a dozen. The riff is not too bad. Now there's the chorus, simple guitar and slightly whiny vocals, the after chorus is pretty good, but it's short. Then the verse again. Chorus. It's all not that bad, but it's nothing special either. Meh, I can't really say a lot more about this song. It might grow on me, it wasn't bad, but it didn't amaze me either. 6/10 Songs : Dark Tranquillity - Therein (Melodic Death Metal) Dark Tranquillity - Emptier still (Melodic Death Metal) Liquido - Narcotic (fun, fun, rock, I don't know :p ) |

Liquido - Narcotic
Never heard of these guys... Starts off with an ambient feel to it, reminds me of Coldplay a bit. Then in comes a synth riff, seemingly straight from an 80's song. 00:38 the guitars come in just playing guitars behind the synth riff. I'm actually enjoying this part. Around 1:00 the guitar stops, there is just ambient synths and a smooth bassline. Along with vocals, they sound like they are whispered but they are sung. 1:34 the guitars and synths come back in, with vocals this time. I'm digging this so far. Then back to the smooth bassline and ambient synths + vocals, about halfway through the male vocals are accompanied by female vocals for a line. Once again back to guitar, synth, vocal riff (chorus) Then a new riff, guitar chords with vocals and occaisional pause for vocals, alone. This leads back into the chorus, the drums pick up a little here (more snare action) and on this, the song fades out. I give this an 8/10. For a 'metal-head' i enjoyed that. Good stuff. Songs... Enslaved - 'The Dead Stare' or 'As Fire Swept Clean The Earth' (Viking Metal w/ progressive elements) Persauder - The Hunter (Awesome Power metal) Death - Spirit Crusher (Progressive Death metal) |
Aren't blasts hitting everything at the same time? I just call it the fast rock beat.
Blast beats are when you hit the snare and the hi-hat or the ride symbal at the same time at a high BPM. Most Death metal bands use this. In 'Alone' HellHammer does this for a short time near the beginning of the song. By the way, my soulseek is Per Ardua Ad Astra. Add me, i've added you. |
^^ You have to first call dibs, review a song, and then suggest your song, dude. Go to the first page and read the instructions.

Not always, some blasts are sometimes done with the two hands being on different beats (i.e. ride snare ride snare ride snare ride snare). The easiest way to describe a blast is all 16th notes with just about every limb (or if they are derek roddy, 32nd notes) |
