Tolstoy is good, but I like Dostoevsky better. The Idiot was great.
Also like Bulgakov a fair amount. Gogol is great too.
I prefer writers who don't focus on one or two prominent philosophical insights throughout novels like that, instead creating a complete universe of thought. Also Dostoevsky cant write in comparison to Tolstoy, so... |

 |
dostoevsky is way better than tolstoy dude. there's a greater understanding of the human personality in notes from underground than any other book i've read, beyond ishmael.

I get why people could think that Dostoevsky's better than Tolstoy because he's easily a more focused thinker, I just like Tolstoy's more subtle approach to recognizing the human condition more than Dostoevsky's more upfront style, especially when Dostoevsky's more 'claustrophobic' novels are ridden with prose that doesn't have shit on Tolstoy's finer works. The modest reality to Tolstoy is such a breath of fresh air, and there are tons of subtleties within the characters that I enjoy coming back to, as opposed to Dostoevsky who seems to be impressed with cramming more information into smaller spaces, which forces him to be more upfront instead of allowing himself some extra room to really let his writing be free, I guess.
Although in Dostoevsky's defense, Tolstoy's final short stories were deplorable; Dostoevsky was never so low. Another Russian author I really like is Zamiatin. And while we're talking bout Russian literature, please tell me there are no Ayn Rand fans in here. |
And Wall of text is why Tolstoy loses to Dostoevsky in my eyes. He tends to take too much space to convey an idea. Kind of the inverse of the problem you describe with Dostoevsky cramming too much into a certain space.
i have to agree. bitchfork you're basically saying you like tolstoy bc he's a bad writer. dostoevsky is able to fit more meaning into one sentence of dialogue than tolstoy can in a page of narration. |
mitch how many languages do you know? i forget the exact number.
