I'm going to apply to a library today.

Sweet. I thought about volunteering at my local library.
I'm going to apply to a library today.
twenty five or six to four |
Volunteering is lame. I'm talking about a job.
Volunteering is lame. I'm talking about a job.
Yes, but I have a job that certainly pays more than the library. I was talking about volunteering from the kindness of my heart. That makes me sound like a better person than you. Your name is Ben LESSER. Do you see where I'm going with this? Raayl > Me > You. What prompted looking into a library for a job? And are you doing anything with your degree? |
Library because it's the campus one, and I can't do anything with my degree, anyway. This is just a filler year between graduating and going to grad school.
I just need a job that pays rent and won't make me kill myself. |

There's no such thing as a degree you can't do anything with - at worst, you can always teach your degree to the next batch of suckers.
You can't do anything with your degree? I'd bitch to your school that they sold you a worthless degree and you want your money back.
Says two people who clearly don't hold university bachelor degrees. I am not an exception. Modern society, at least in North America (or at the very least, my part of the country) is at the point where a BA is roughly equivalent to a high school diploma--and a high school diploma stopped mattering a number of years ago. While it is not to say that I am unable to find employment opportunities with my degree, it is immensely difficult. I do not begrudge my university anything, because it is not their fault that work is difficult to come by. This is why I am going to return to school next fall. I would have done so this fall, but after having spent so many years of my life in school, I felt it was appropriate and mentally necessary to take a break. In many ways, working at a library is highly relevant to my particular degree (English) because it allows me to work in an environment with a great number of academics and I can benefit from their experiences as I consider graduate schools. Furthermore, it will allow me to become more properly familiar with the library system which in turn will make me more adept at researching material for future work. Insofar as the comment about teaching is concerned--you cannot teach with a BA. At the least, it is required to possess a BEd (Bachelor of Education) in order to quality for joining the Teachers Association, and even then, it is often necessarily to possess a second degree in a subject that qualities as a 'teachable' (such as science, math, English, history, etc.). |
You're talking to a guy who's on the verge of finishing a BMus so please, a little respect when it comes to uselessness of degrees.
Though, that's harsh about the Bachelor Of Education requirement. If I want to teach music at a tertiary insitute over here, my BMus will be enough. If I wanted to teach classes of students at a high school I would need an education degree of some kind, but not to do private tuition at one. I don't think people should stress if their degree isn't hugely employable. There's only one thing a man needs to work and that's good old fashioned elbow grease, and they can pursue their interests on their own time. |

I realize that a diploma and BA are viewed about the same, which is why I plan on working this dead-end job until I get accepted into the master's program, and then using loans to quit my job and become a full-time student. I'm hoping to step it up and pound through my studies and have my BS in Math at the end of next Spring. If I get accepted into the Math master's program, I'll be using the summer school sessions to work on my BA in Quantum Physics. It was always recommended to me that, if you want to teach (in the U.S. at least), you should get a degree in your subject and then go for the teaching degree. At the elementary/middle school level, you aren't required to have a BAE if you have a teaching major and a degree in your field (although they'll usually require you to stay in school to work for the BAE). What's your degree in, again? Creative Writing? |
Library wouldn't even let me apply because I'm not a student. Bunch of fucks. Why hire someone who is available at any time when you can hire a first or second year who can only work 10 hours a week.
My degree is in English Language and Literature. |
Unfortunately, that's how schools work - they usually like to keep everything student-run because they probably get some sort of tax break and can afford to pay students minimum wage.
|
I worked my *** off to get into a field that was somewhat lenient on degrees, looking moreso for experience. gathering the experience, however wasn't easy.
I wasn't really afforded an opportunity to go to college though, I tried to work my way through but couldn't really stay sober long enough to do so. |
It's not even a min. wage job, either. Blargh.
I don't want to resort to working in some crappy food place. |
take your 5 minutes and then get back in the game ben.
|
For sure. I'll start searching again tomorrow.
|
I was scared shitless when I got my first place. I don't know what your circumstances are but I was asked to leave my home at 17, I had a suitcase and about 3500 bucks. are you working anywhere currently?
oops, and a car. |
Have you thought about trying to work for the local paper or something? What about the city library? Surely an English & Lit degree will look good for either of those places.
|
oh, and guys, don't ask me to play any more video games, k? I have a problem with them.

oops, and a car.
I'm just moving out because I'm 22 and graduated and don't want to leech off my mom any longer. I've got about $4k to my name, and no job atm. No transportation either, but most things are walking distance. This is my gap year between degrees. Edit: re: WoW: it's about time. Good for you, haha. |
I miss my days of RuneScape. **sigh**
|
seriously, my house just fell apart around me while I got my dailies done.
|
That's rough. Sadly, not the only person I've talked to who has told similar stories.
I think you'll enjoy having more free time. |
I stopped playing 3 weeks ago, it's been great.
|
"Guess what? My breath still smells like your dad's dick."
I love Jon Dore. |
wut?
|
wut?
Have you not heard of Jon Dore? He's got a show on the Comedy Network, he's a Canadian comedian. His show is hilarious. That line comes from an episode where he's trying to learn to trash talk and such, so he tries learning from this guy and tests out his skills while playing basketball with him. |
I don't watch TV, so I'm a bit out of the loop, especially with comedians.
|
Gotcha.
Have you been reading anything good lately? I'm currently reading a Sherlock Holmes anthology with 22 of the stories. It's the first time I'm reading any of this stuff and I'm really enjoying it. I've been very into detective stories lately. |
Truthfully, no. I've been so inundated with stuff that reading just hasn't been something I've had time for. Hopefully going to change that soon enough, once I get moved in and have a bit more free time.
|
I've just finished reading The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep and Ubik in succession and am now reading A Scanner Darkly.

Stop your science fiction and read his Voices in the Street. I get my plumbing all fixed tomorrow! And meet a pretty girl! One of those things has definite positive results. Who knows on the other one. |

Once I get income, I'll start buying books again. I just need a job. >_>
