no no lol with cymbals hardware and shells and everything complete for 7000$ :P

but the pic above is an example of what you can do :)

Josiah 11-24-2006 07:29 PM

Well forget adding cymbals in, that just throws off everything. How much for just the drums?

I always suggest people do not go custom until they have played several high end kits and know exactly what they want sound wise.

While pretty drums that look great are cool, the sound is what is most important. Your drums are YOUR sound.

Also keep in mind, with any high end, or even medium kit. It's an investment, so cases, if not hard cases are really something that should be purchased at the same time as the kit as well.

xTimx 11-24-2006 07:32 PM

the drums are 2000$ CAD, they're maple shells. only draw back is they're wrapped. now i'm actually thinking of going to a custom wrap. carbon fibre wrap on them actually. should be interesting. i know what sound i want. i have played on high end kits before. i have recorded before. i have done lots of local concerts. :) so i think i'm good too go :)

EDIT: the price 7000$ around there DID in fact include hard cases. sorry for the mix up

Josiah 11-24-2006 07:44 PM

Well excellent then!
You'll find however, most people will find carbon fiber wrapped drums very ugly.

If that's wrapped though - there are plenty of other custom companies that can do far better finish work for less money.

Check out Ayotte for starters (to stick in canada).

7k for a wrapped kit is extremelly high. Even with cases. THough how many pieces we talkin?

Janeway 11-24-2006 07:46 PM

My mom bought me The Ultimate Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Neat.

Sync0pation 11-24-2006 07:49 PM

I was watching an episode of The Simpsons yesterday, and the Comic Book Guy was looking at naked pictures of Janeway.

Janeway 11-24-2006 07:57 PM

I wish she would do nudes.

I'm sick of poorly done photoshops.

Edit: Why the heck is Ford Prefect black in the movie?
I haven't actually watched the movie in full, I've caught glimpses of it inbetween Sims loading screens while my dad was watching it. Now I imagine him as black but he's described as pale with sandy hair. =/

Foo.

xTimx 11-24-2006 08:02 PM

well i was kinda playing around with some ideas, how ever i was wanting to get a 7 piece kit, (thats why its a lil much), also going custom is a lil more expensive. plus having maple shells and all. the hardware, cymbals and throne it comes out to 3000$, the drums come out to 3000$ then cases at around 7-900$ if that even.

Josiah 11-24-2006 08:04 PM
the hardware, cymbals and throne it comes out to 3000$
Woa.. somethin is way off there.

xTimx 11-24-2006 08:12 PM

you have to keep in mind....this is canadian money,...ok lemme list the cymbals and hard ware/clamps i'm getting

A Custom zildjian cymbals
13" a custom hi hats
16" medium crash
17" medium crash
18" medium crash
18" china
20" ping ride
9" efx splash
11" efx splash
mid end mike portnoy max stax
6" zilbel

tama iron cobra lever glide (kevlar strap) hi hat stand
tama iron cobra power glide double pedal
4-5 cymbal boom arm stands
4-5 clamps
2 tom tom holder stands
drum throne

i'm gonna start out with a 5 piece kit with 2 medium crash's the hats, and ride. along with the hi hat stand and double pedal. and even that comes out to 4000$ after taxes.

Josiah 11-24-2006 08:20 PM

having 16,17,18 of the same cymbal might be a bit redudent, no?

Berk 11-24-2006 08:38 PM

Meh I'm bored.

22" Meinl Byzance Heavy Ride
20" Meinl Soundcaster Powerfull Crash
14" Meinl Fast Hats.

And I made a drumming vid, I needed some thing to do.

xTimx 11-24-2006 08:50 PM

why would it be redundant? :P i like variety

Berk 11-24-2006 09:14 PM

Meh. Veriety in my eyes is 12 splashes and Chinas(Or any cymbal) between the sizes of 6" and 14".

Ouala.

My parents are fighting over my sister getting new boots. My dad is thinking shes gonna buy like some stupid pair of retarded looking things..

Inkstar 11-25-2006 12:11 AM

I had a good dream last night. Dreamt that my dad bought me a DW9000 hi-hat stand, single bass pedal, and an Axis double pedal.

Good times.

Win A Rabbit 11-25-2006 12:56 AM

Gosh. My cymbals were in grave danger tonight. I wasn't expecting a drummer to come, so I set up the kit the way I have mine normally (reverse the two rack toms, cymbals in the same spots I always have them). Then this kid comes in with his guitarist friend, and they ask if they can play a song. I say "yeah, definately", and the drummer (13-14 years old) tells me he's going ot be a minute, he has to set up the drums like he's used to.

Worst. Setup. Ever.

Words can not explain this. I went to heat up my soup, then sat down where I could see them play. I just looked at it, got up, and said my mom was coming to pick up my stuff right now. Packed up my cymbals, called my mom, and got her to come.

I can't even describe it, so I'll try drawing a picture of it.

Okay, now imagine the toms and the crash cymbal at just under 90 degrees. And the snare as low as it can go. Hats as high as they could go. Ride tilted away at 45, just out of reach. Floor tom as low as it could go. He didn't even use the bass drum or hat pedals. It was tough to watch.

Josiah 11-25-2006 01:25 AM

ouch...

just, like do people not see? how hard is it too see other drummers, pro's, setup and simply mimic them.... haha really..

"Ride tilted away..."

HAHAHA

Win A Rabbit 11-25-2006 01:37 AM

 Seriously. When he said "I need to set them up the way I'm used to", I expected he'd switch the rack toms around, maybe adjust the cymbal placement. In no way was I expecting to see that.

The guitarist was great (great player, the songs he wrote were, well, what a 13 year old would write, can't blame him), and I'd heard him play before, so I was expecting a competent drummer.

I felt kind of bad just rushing up and taking the cymbals, though. I'm all for encouraging kids to play, but part of me just wanted to slap him in the face and tell him to get lessons before he touches another drum.

Josiah 11-25-2006 02:37 AM

Haha or at least give him a ModernDrummer and say "Do as you see in the pictures."

I agree, support is great, but the line where it stops is damage to your gear. They can thrash their own all they want though.

opethdw 11-25-2006 02:56 AM

I don't want to make a new thread for this question, so I'll just post it here. I've been working on my pad for hours on end everyday, and I've been advancing pretty well. My question is, when you start doing rolls at a fast speed (double/triple stroke rolls), do you stop wristing each hit out and start using 1 motion for 2 hits? Like... using the rebound for all the hits instead of wrist at the faster speeds? I hope I explained this well enough, and thanks to anyone who helps me out.

Jezen 11-25-2006 03:03 AM

And I think there is even a line on thrashing their own gear, when it comes to thrashing your own gear intentionally to try and pretend your a rock legend or whatever.

Hennyway, i'm starting a quartet with the lovely Charlotte Reid. I'm currently busy arranging swing(ish) versions of my favourite rock songs. Should be fun. I've got down most of Prodigal by Porcupine Tree and The Hole in Me by Blackfield.
I have a whole load of songs I want to do, aswell as the more traditional stuff like In the Wee Hours of the Morning, The Lady is a Tramp, All of Me, Someone to Watch Over Me, In the Wee Small Hours of The Morning ect ect..

I was thinking last night that it would be awesome to create swing versions of Brena by A Perfect Circle and Reflection by Tool.

oliv_da_skinmasher 11-25-2006 03:12 AM

Mornin all. Last nite I went to see Electric Eel Shock and I have to say they rocked. and I have to work for 10.30 and I still aint been to bed yet so i'm gonna be knackered lol.

Yes, technically speaking it's all single strokes if you are using a wrist motion for each stroke, you are simply using a different stick RRLL, etc

A double stroke is 2 notes in for 1 stroke, triplet stroke would be 3 notes for 1 stroke, etc

You must learn rebound control (this is the essence of our drumming) in order to play any type of closed roll, or even moderate open rolls.

As you advance more, you will find the motions become more fluid like and smooth of course.

Thanks alot for the help man. I've been able to get my double stroke roll pretty consistent over the past few days, now that I know I'm doing it correctly, I'll add it to my practice regiment. Thanks again.

Whoa, I don't know about you but I sit behind my snare, not on it ;)

Dave*Grohl 11-25-2006 05:01 AM

morning mx!

Just woke up, and no hangover!! yay! First saturday morning in a long time without that one!

Inkstar 11-25-2006 05:07 AM

You alco, Dave. :p

Dave*Grohl 11-25-2006 05:11 AM

:D I'm no alco!

It was a wise choise not to drink too much yesterday. Just had a few beers with my mates at the bar. Now I feel so happy! I guess I could get wasted tonight....hmmm...mabey not

Inkstar 11-25-2006 05:18 AM

That's good man! Havin a few beers and chillin out is all you need. I'm not a big fan of the whole getting trashed idea. Just have a few, watch the footy, chill with mates and yeah, provides for a great night.

Dave*Grohl 11-25-2006 05:21 AM

totally!

Corkofski 11-25-2006 06:53 AM

im very up for the getting trashed, but im cutting down

half bottle a weekend instead of a litre bottle

EDIT: dumb things i heard today:

"AHEADS keep cymbals clean"
"the only zildjians worth buying are z customs"
"i have these old shitty hihats, New beats or something"
"my drum kit is really old and nasty, 60s premier"
"o-rings are awesome for playing live"
"aheads cant break cymbals, theyre hollow"

this poor guy is going to BIMM next year, which is a 20 grand plus a year college for music

Inkstar 11-25-2006 07:18 AM

Dumb thing I heard on the TV today:

"We'll show you how to save money by saving water!"

...well of course you're going to save money if you save water, you idiots.

Pauly 11-25-2006 08:47 AM

I guess people will be more inclined to save water if they know they're saving money. Especially with a potential 10x increase in price here in WA.

Dave*Grohl 11-25-2006 08:51 AM

Yay, just recorded a drum track for our bands new album...now Im gonna go back to the studio and drink beer that i bought today. Yummy

maniac0796 11-25-2006 08:55 AM

So my cousin sent me Reason.

And i have no idea how to use it. For those of you who don't know what reason is, look here:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y215/fbb_maniac/reason.gif

I'm guessing i need some sort of midi keyboard/input to use it, or am i wrong.

gah, this is so confuzzling!

anyone know anything about reason?

And inkstar, europeans are allowed to drink lots. It's our way of life! I'm in support of not getting trashed though. I'll drink a few beers or something to socialise, but the whole getting trashed thing, whats the point?

We_Love_Lime 11-25-2006 09:28 AM

You do.
I think if you use the Quantize notes button. That you can put them in like from the computer like you do on FL Studio.

But I think it is most easily done with a MIDI Keyboard.
Reason has a tutorial on their website. Try it out.

I can't give you a link. But go to Propellerhead.se or whatever reasons site is.
And click Reason on the side bar, on the left. Just reason, not the other versions of Reason.
Than click Download Reason
And than theres a guy with a green and orange shirt and a headset. And it says new to reason?
And just download the little video traielr they have, and that's how I learned.
It's very informative.

And I think theres some info manual too down at the bottom.
But I didn't use that.

Omg went to see Tool last night in Manchester, it was ****ing amazing Danny Carey is a God!

Corkofski 11-25-2006 09:48 AM

We_Love_Lime 11-25-2006 09:52 AM
