The problem is, so many people (especially in America) take it far more literally than they should. This is why there's people like this.

Since you are in Canada, you probably don't see that happening. But here in the States, its very worrying.
http://www.dotsub.com/films/godthepsycho/index.php?autostart=true&language_setting=en_2625

first example of someone taking it far more literally than they should.

"Be the change you want to see in the world."

My opinion is if you want people to go about it in a logical way, start doing so yourself. Don't take random quotes out of context in a far-too-literal way to try to protest people taking random quotes out of context in a far-too-literal way.

Seafroggys 02-21-2008 01:37 AM

Your point makes no sense. How can he take the Bible literally if HE DOESN"T BELIEVE A DAMN WORD IT SAYS?

Since neo-cons don't use logic and reason, you have to debate them on what they do use....literal wordings of the good book. Which is what this guy is doing. There's really no other way of going about it, unless you can provide some effective examples.

I honestly think Monotheism needs to be eventually abolished by the freeing of people's minds. Its 'nutcases' like this that help.

like i said, he's taking random quotes out of context in a far-too-literal way.
neo-cons don't use logic and reason
generalization.
you have to debate them on what they do use
posting a video of a rant on internet =/= debate
There's really no other way of going about it, unless you can provide some effective examples.
there are no effective ways of telling someone what to believe in. i work with youth for a living, alot of which do things daily that i don't agree with. me saying "you're wrong you're wrong live like me" isn't going to persuade them at all. infact, it's going to push them further away and give them more reason to continue what they're doing, because that's all they know and they're not getting any positive feedback from the other side of the issue, so why give the other side a chance? people believe in what they believe, no matter how many of the same videos get posted on the internet.

the same way that you watching a sermon isn't going to make you religious, a christian watching an atheist rant isn't going to make them atheists.
I honestly think Monotheism needs to be eventually abolished by the freeing of people's minds. Its 'nutcases' like this that help.
helps how, exactly?

and btw, free minds, like you claim to have, don't spew gross generalizations about an entire population.

In the foreword to both of my bibles, it states that it is the word of God. The authentic, inerrant, holy-ass word of the one and only God.

I don't get how religious moderates can interpret the Bible loosely, when it states so explicitly that it is the word of God, and all dissenters shall deal with the wrath of God. Not only does it do this once, it does it hundreds of times, over and over and over again in both the old and new testaments.

It fucking urges you to take it literally. God doesn't say, "Hey, you know, I created you guys to evolve, and I know that in a few more hundred years you guys'll learn that illness isn't caused by demons, that the earth revolves around the sun, and a whole plethora of other life-changing, immensely important things, and it's cool and stuff if you want to just interpret my book to suit your evolving self, as long as you still tote it around."

At least the extremists are devoted to their delusions. Moderates just contort it to try and make it fit with modernity, rather than just accepting the absolute improbability of an all-powerful wizard who shit the universe out in seven days.

Morals don't need to be derived from a book. It's dangerous to derive morals from any book because you're abandoning logical thought for something totally irrational, written thousands of years ago by people who had even less of a clue than we do.

Some of the most immoral people are the most pious sons of bitches you'll ever see.

Seafroggys 02-21-2008 01:56 AM

The definition of a neo-con is that they don't use logic and reason ;)

Janeway also put it much better than I ever could. Rep++

You work in a youth center. Its a generally practiced principle that youths believe a lot of things; myths, legends, stories, etc.

This should not be true of adults.

example. alot of my kids smoke. why do they smoke? their parents smoke. their friends smoke.

they grew up in a smoking environment.

me telling them "OMG LOOK AT THE LABEL LOOK HOW RIDICULOUS IT IS YOU SHOULD NEVER DO THAT FREE YOUR MIND YOURE DESTROYING EVERYTHING AROUND YOU" isn't going to change their "it feels natural to smoke/it feels good to smoke/smoking gives me something to look forward to after ______/etc" feelings. it's just not. as logical as it seems to me, it's not. going. to. do. shit. and the more i try to bombard them with "STOP STOP STOP" the more they will turn to what they know and feel comfortable with. which is, say it with me, the thing that i so know is wrong for them.

people find comfort in different things. smoking, drinking, knitting, painting, yoga, religion. anything.

some people don't find comfort in knitting, but you don't see them posting videos of why people should never knit ever and how it harms everything around them. religion seems to be the only thing that people look at and go "hey, i'm better than them. i'm going to tell everyone why i'm better and how stupid they are for doing what they do."

Janeway 02-21-2008 02:11 AM

I've never seen hordes of angry knitters waving "Knitters Hate Fags!" signs outside of soldiers funerals, stomping on American flags and wishing death on bastard children.

Smokers don't drive planes into buildings filled with hundreds of people they've never even met.

Drunkards don't fill their pockets with razor blades and blow themselves up on a bus.

When the thing you take comfort in becomes dangerous, what happens to the rest of us?

Seafroggys 02-21-2008 02:13 AM

Knitting is irrelevant because its constructive and it doesn't harm anybody, except for some weird finger pricking accidents, some dollars, and some time.

Smoking is a complicated issue. However, do you think schools should stop doing videos and PSAs about why smoking is bad? I mean, its all rants, right?

i'm not saying there are no religious extremists. i'm saying an extremist isn't going to watch the video seafroggys posted and say to themself "you know, those out-of-context quotes have me thinking. maybe i shouldn't go fly a plane into a building or blow up a bus. what else can i do this afternoon?" i'm saying those videos don't help at all.
Smoking is a complicated issue. However, do you think schools should stop doing videos and PSAs about why smoking is bad? I mean, its all rants, right?
tbh if schools are still doing videos and psa's, yes they should drop them. it's an outdated technique that holds no ground. the only kids those videos effect are the kids that wouldn't smoke in the first place.

going to bed now, though. i have to be up early so i can walk down to the school (20 minutes) to talk to a teacher about organizing the battle of the bands. i figure there's more chance he'll work with me on it if i talk to him in person instead of little emails back and forth.

man, 25th hour is goooooooood

A Dead Modernist 02-21-2008 02:28 AM

Yeah, check out Do The Right Thing next, another great Spike Lee "joint".

Janeway 02-21-2008 02:35 AM

Yes, but at least they might lead someone who isn't an extremist nut case to at least question their faith. Even if those quotes are "taken out of context," it would still lead someone to at least think about it, which is an improvement on blindly following.

When more people begin to criticize faith, more and more people will abandon it. Eliminating moderatism will eventually eliminate extremism.

Bleh. I just got to disc 3. I feel like sleeping but I also feel like playing more.

My university is so wussy, colleges NEVER close down and this is day #2 due to "inclement weather" that they've done it so far, and its supposed to be just as shitty tomorrow so maybe I'll have a 4 day weekend.

The pros of going to a mainly commuter college.

Mr Pink 02-21-2008 11:12 AM

When I was in college there were NO computers, iPods, DVDs, CDs, internet, and no AIDS. We marveled at the burning ball of gas in the sky that warmed us but went away each day when we or someone made it mad, all our cars had V8s and a minimum of 300 hp, there were no cell phones, the Soviet Union was still a bad assed mofo, disco and polyester was in, and Rogers, Slingerland and Ludwig were all around, making all their drums in the USA.
