I write in multiple instruments too man.

I really couldn't ever limit myself to one instrument, because you can't always say what you want with a guitar, or with a piano, or with a violin, or bagpipes (:p:D) and so I really like being able to switch about and even write them all in together.
srsly

i should sit down and expand my piano abilities

i have a keyboard upstairs and i only ever learned how to play one ben folds song on it and then i lost the sheet music

i also want to buy a violin and learn how to play it

-Listy- 03-21-2007 12:28 PM

I'd love to be able to play piano/keyboard well.

I know a few basic chords and stuff but I may think about getting lessons in the future.

I use my sister's keyboard in my recordings and it sounds great, i'm trying to incorporate it more into my playing.

Surtr 03-21-2007 12:30 PM

Mhm, I use my sister's keyboard, and I basically taught myself everything I know.

I'm not that good, but for a guy who's never taken a lesson in his life, I'm better than my sister who's been playing for 4 years now.

I've got all the scales and most of the modes down and etc. and so I just sit there and make chords, and then attach a melody to it.

Same deal with Violin, I just taught myself and now I know a fair bit. I'm not that good with Violin though..I'm more of a Piano man lol

Iscariot 03-21-2007 12:31 PM

i can't afford lessons so everything i play is something i've learned myself

Surtr 03-21-2007 12:34 PM

Mhm same.

I haven't the money to be wasting on learning anything like that, so instead I just figure it out myself.

One thing I hate though, is learning other people's songs on Piano/Violin. I'll do it some for Piano, but I love it way more to just sit there and write my own stuff.

-Listy- 03-21-2007 12:35 PM

I dont really have the money to spend either, but I find it hard to know where to start when it comes to teaching myself.

although I learnt purple rain by ear and can do a little improvising so i'll get there :p.

Neoteric 03-21-2007 12:36 PM

I love messing about on an xylophone since I can come up with melodies really easily on it. When I do that then I put it to keyboard or guitar.

Surtr 03-21-2007 12:43 PM

Vibes are the greatest thing in the world for my music. I play such odd dissonant stuff sometimes, and when you use the pedal on Vibes you can get this insane sound that's like..The most heaven/hell sound ever.

Anyone who doesn't really know much about music, and is fairly ignorant towards real music, cringes, and everyone who understands it, who's listening to it for real, pretty much loses their mind to it's beauty.

My band teacher has made me stay after class to play him some stuff I wrote on Vibes and he actually took one song I played and replaced it with another song writing test mark I had, and gave me 10/10, instead of 6/10.

books

i don't know if you were ever in band class but standard of excellence is a book series that starts at beginner and goes all the way up to advanced technique

also when i decided i wanted to really learn how to play the guitar i bought the whole guitar grimoire collection

i've been digging into the music theory little by little because for the most part i know my theory ok i mostly use the chord encyclopedia for when i'm unsure of a fingering

BridgeToSolace 03-21-2007 01:16 PM

I would love to learn how to play cello, but they're too expensive.

I just write guitar (and I give my drummer a fair idea of what to do, although that doesn't mean he does it :p).

I figure that I'll just write what I'm best at. Something that sounds good to an a newb at an instrument will not sounds notable to someone who actually plays the instrument, and thus I don't bother.

Plus other instruments don't fit into my songs. I like to think that I fill in the sound range with just two guitars and a drum set.

RissaPoodle 03-21-2007 01:21 PM

Jon! I'll give you cello lessons; cheap cello lessons.

I took cello lessons and voice lessons and that's it.
yeah I'm gonna have a look into some now, thanks.

I'm pretty ashamed that when I first started playing guitar, I didn't bother to learn scales and stuff like that. I had been playing bass for 2 years before I switched to guitar so I found it really easy to learn chords and improvise but I really need to go back to the basics and learn more..im kinda at the point where I just play along to a few backing tracks for half an hour a day and it sucks :(

sometimes I would be up till like 4 in the morning just jamming along quietly in my room and getting alot of practise in. I really need to get sorted out.

You can teach me cello anytime :naughty:

I would take voice lessons, but I don't like taking lessons.

Permanent Solution 03-21-2007 04:32 PM

Tritones are fun indeed.

BridgeToSolace 03-21-2007 06:11 PM

Aren't tritones just the standard way of harmonizing 0.o

Using the sixth sounds nice too.

cobert 03-21-2007 06:49 PM

Vibes are radddd.

That Gladiator music in band is intense, then last week we got music from Lord of the Rings. 'many meetings' is awesome.

Tritone is the most naturally dissonant interval.

Eliminator 03-21-2007 07:13 PM

Most naturally awesome.

MattSharpIsCool 03-21-2007 07:25 PM

I don't know any of this music talk. I just play.

I'm thinking about learning piano and making it my primary instrument. I'd really like a band heavy on keyboard and synth. Good synth, not shitty synth.

Eliminator 03-21-2007 07:26 PM

mattsharpiscoldplay

MattSharpIsCool 03-21-2007 07:47 PM

Ew no.

Something more along the lines of Pink Floyd or Steve Miller was what I was thinking.

Eliminator 03-21-2007 07:49 PM

how is that any better

slep 03-21-2007 07:50 PM

BRING DA MOTHER ****IN RUCKUS

just thought id say that

cobert 03-21-2007 07:50 PM

I always wanted to start a gay post-emo band with just drums and a keyboard.

nobodyblossomsforever 03-21-2007 10:18 PM

Thought id say hi k bye :-/

JuggerKnoT 03-21-2007 10:27 PM

You listen to Panic at the Disco. How is that good?

Permanent Solution 03-21-2007 11:39 PM

What's wrong with Panic at the Disco Seth? pft

MattSharpIsCool 03-21-2007 11:44 PM

I just can't stand them. It's that dance-pop stuff like Fall Out Boy, and the singer drives me freaking nuts.

Just not my cup of tea, I guess.

Don't think I'm too much of an asshole to admit they do write some decent lyrics sometimes, though.

Permanent Solution 03-21-2007 11:46 PM

FOB is good too. Silly kid.

Dance Pop is fun, be fun Seth!

B 03-21-2007 11:58 PM

ugh

i want to sleep

but i really dont want tomorrow to come

worst fucking week ever
